Finger Lake Race Track -- End of the Season -- Many New Homes -- Warmest Thanks

Good news for Kp. How wonderful that he’s getting the chance to live his life out happily.

It looks like many of these horses are finding homes. Devil’s own and Coach moto have been sold.

If I hear of others, through talking with trainers, I’ll add them too.

Wow you folks are great. Thanks to msj, foundationmare and everybody for their efforts for KP.

MORE good news on Karakorum Patriot … “Pate” …

Karakorum Racing just called. They’ve committed the rest of the purchase price for KP!!! They’ve been simply wonderful and we are grateful for their support. I’ll find out about shipping costs and what we need to raise for that.

The good news keeps on coming… FLTAP has a stall for KP and can bring him out, and they’ve got leads for a shipper. They are in touch with the stable to let them know he’s got a buyer.

Thank you all - it takes a village.

Karakorum Racing

I just had a wonderful conversation with Josh Bauman at Karakorum Racing. Josh was already aware of the offer from Old Friends and they are planning on cutting a check for $300 for KP. Josh told me that he has spent the last 2 days dealing with nothing except KP.

I think all that needs to be done is to find out where we send our checks.

How about spa4horses? We need an address to send checks.

To all of you wonderful caring people of COTH that have offered help… YOU ROCK!!!

Hey, guys, another suggestion.

I am a jounrnalist and I think Louise, etc., ought to try and get some news coverage of this. One, to let casual racing fans know what end of the racing season means, and two, get Mr. Zwirm and Karakorum some public recognition for stepping up to repay a horse for his lifestime of work.
Hopefully, it wil encourage more racing fans to contribute to groups like Old Friends and FLTAP or their own track and encourage more racing professionals to act responsibly.

The NY TImes has done a lot of coverage of this issue.

Agree completely… the “good guys” (finger lakes volunteers included) need some recognition. Kudos to all of you who worked so hard to get this put together, and to the racing pros who have stepped up to help this horse!

Anyone have any media contacts? Not only do the folks involved deserve a nod but it’d be great PR for the sport, the FLTAP and the FL trainer listings programs… maybe it’d get a few more horses homes too…

When I get home tonight (and have access to his e-mails again) I plan to send Josh a note thanking him so much for Karakorum Racing’s involvement and I would love to also send the breeder a note as well.

Louise, maunder, foundationmare, et al–would it be possible, as KP is now safe, to use our donations so FLTAP could give one of the other deserving oldsters a home? I think a couple are free/very cheap, so maybe the COTH fund could go to feed/vet them or care until adoption?

still waiting to hear on my horse and shipment…

Oh, PS–SOMEONE GO GET CARR RIDE!

Awesome news all around!

Let’s keep going and try to get all these guys into new homes for Christmas!!

I’m on a mad dash in between kids activities, but had to check this thread. What a GREAT ending to this saga. I’m thrilled for KP. I’ve been following this closely - it’s hard to post on such an emotional thread, I’m not good with the written word .

I agree that this needs some kind of news coverage.

I’d also like to know where the new Old Friends farm is in Saratoga County. I’m in Saratoga, and hadn’t heard of it, so I’m delighted that there is such a place nearby. Perhaps they’ll be needing volunteers!

I think a big part of the problem is finding someone who can take a retired horse on permanently. So many of us board them out. :sigh:

For me, unless there’s injuries, 10 or 12 doesn’t automatically mean retired. If anything I will take an older horse (the one I’m anxiously waiting on is seven) over younger off the track. And if we could at least get one of these older gents or ladies to FLTAP they’d have some time to unwind and be evaluated for a new career.

Second that sentiment, age makes wisdom or at least less startle-ability!

And if they are still sound after a few years they probably have good conformation and a good mind, otherwise they would not have lasted.

If I remember right they JUST opened, like in the last month

NEED HELP!!

Ok Danceronice and I are going to need some help.

Double L has broken down in Missouri and it will be several more days there before he can even leave to get our horses.

Pat wants to leave tomorrow and I dont have anywhere to keep the kids until this gets straightend out.

Louise or anyone at FL - is there somewhere I can board the kids for bit?

  1. Anyone have another shipper coming in that is going West?

need HELP ASAP!!

THANKS!

Equine LVR, I can probably take them until your shipper gets his rig fixed. Actually, I should be able to take care of the horses on the track until they get shipped. There’s no reason why they need to be moved until Dec. 12. I’ll make sure that the stall guy knows the horses are being cared for and that all is on the up and up.

OH THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Can you PM me the details? I am sure I need to pay for their board and feed.

I love the suggestion of getting some attention to this story. It’s certainly a feel-good, seasonally appropriate one!

I do know a guy who works for the Finger Lakes Times, based in Geneva, who is a photojournalist with a particular fondness for horse-racing. I’d like it to be wider than FLT: do you think that might be a good start?

I’d like the emphasis to be on Karakorum Patriot, his stellar career and the generosity of random people who love horses, especially OTTBs. His groom, Victor, deserves credit for his loving care of the horse for the past two years. Patriot is Victor’s “big horse”!

Any other ideas about how to promote this story and, thus, the stories of so many others?

I’m going to shoot an email to one of the sportswriters at the Democrat and Chronicle, who does seem to follow racing. Let’s see if he’ll do an article about a magnificent horse, people who care, and a new life.

And, I’m going to issue a challenge to spa4horses. You did such a wonderful job with KP. Can you do the same for Midnight Secret?

No strings on this horse. He’s free. We just need to find him a home, and quickly since the track is closing so soon. He’s got more starts that KP, and, he’s older. He’s just as deserving of a wonderful new home.
