Finger Lake Race Track -- End of the Season -- Many New Homes -- Warmest Thanks

I’m trying to figure out a way to help Midnight Secret. With that long of a race career, there must be someone in his past who would love to see him retire! Do you think if we came up with money to sponsor him that Old Friends would take him too? At least we could pay for his hay and other expenses this winter. Could someone look up his records and maybe contact his breeders/old owners and see if they are aware of his current situation?

I know there are a bunch of us here who would like to be able to support the volunteers and their efforts with trainer’s listings!

I knew Slammer when he was at Aqueduct. He was a nice horse and he could run a bit too. I’m happy he’s with someone I “know” via CoTH!

If Old Friends has sufficient funding for Patriot, I want to re-affirm my pledge of $50 to FLTAP. They do such good work and deserve every bit of praise the media might give them.
Linny - thanks for letting me know…question for you, if you happen to know, did he have the chip in the left knee then? It has significant arthritis, and is very large… just curious on how he may have injured himself as his legs otherwise are clean as can be…thank you!

To all of you who have offered to donate to FLTAP, I want to thank you very much. I do want to explain the situation to you, though, so you know where your money is going.

The Trainer’s Listing volunteers are under the umbrella of FLTAP, but we do our own thing, as it were. We run the BB, we take the listings, etc. We don’t get any money from the Adoption Program to help with these horses.

The Adoption Program doesn’t buy horses. All horses that go there are donated.

It’s kind of a Catch-22. The money that you donate to FLTAP is much appreciated, but it won’t help the horses on the Trainer’s Listings, it will help the horses at the Adoption Center. You can’t donate to help the horses on the Trainer’s Listings, because we are, primarily, a listing service to make it easier for buyer and seller to connect, and to get the information about horses for sale out to a larger audience.

Confused yet?
Loiuse, I’m so glad you did post this. I knew it but didn’t feel right to say anything. I’ve donated a stall over at FLTAP when they first opened 2 yrs ago as well as some blankets, polo wraps and a couple of other items. To be honest, I know they have had problems in the past, which are not unusual for a new organization and until they get the kinks out, they will continue to make them.

Since the Trainer’s Listings is under the umbrella of FLTAP, which is a not-for-profit, I imagine the ONLY break that Louise, maunder and foundationmare can take is to track their milage and deduct it from their taxes. At least that’s what my tax preparer told me several yrs ago when I asked about donating my time for working Horse Trials in the area and committee work or the use of my property for things like Pony Club activities.

That is why I decided to send my donation to Old Friends. It appears that I will have to make that donation to the KY branch as the NY doesn’t officially open till 7/22/2010 even though they are taking horses. BTW, Karakorum Patriot is not the first horse there. I don’t remember the name of the first horse but if anyone is interested google the Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division and you can read more about them.

Believe me, I have nothing against FLTAP at all but until they are better managed and that includes the board as well as the barn itself, my donations will go to charities that are better organized and run.

Silent Reflection is coming to Canada to live at my farm:D There were so many to choose from, it was hard, but her trainer is being most helpful with helping me get my border crossing paperwork in order, so that helped me narrow it down and finally choose her:D

Flying Zee Stables (NY) bred him. Here is his racing history…

2001 15 3 6 0 $37,634

I don’t keep UTD on this thread for a couple of days and look what happens! Kudos kudos kudos to all who worked so hard behind the scenes and on here to get KP to a safe haven. MSJ, I have

Louise, I may be confused here, but if the TL volunteers were volunteers for FLTAP as well, it seems to me that there could be some way to establish a fund for the TL volunteers for materials etc. I mean to say- if you guys added “digital camera” or “Poster board” or something to the physical donations wish list, could those things go to you guys from the adoption program? Or is there a way to designate a percentage from donations to go to the trainer listing volunteers? Just thinking out loud here.
That is a very generous donation, msj!
Thanks caryledee, but if you think about it, it’s a whole lot less than if he had come home with me!

Congratulations!! Wonderful choice!

Very very true!

I sent Highcliff Farm an email, as Midnight Secret’s sire, Key Contender stands there and perhaps they can direct me to Flying Z or pass on a message to them…

I will let you know what I find out.

I don’t want to sound like a grouch here, but I’d hate for everyone to bombard all these breeders for money or wanting them to take the horse back. Smaller TB breeders still have 25-30 foals per year… in 10 years that would be 250-300 horses- no one has the resources to take back all these horses after their track careers are over… and I’m sure while they may WANT to help the horses, it simply isn’t feesible… and what makes them be able to help one horse and not another? It would be a difficult decision. So while it is a good thought to contact all the breeders and trainers in each of these horses pasts, don’t you think it is being a bit unfeesible? What makes this horse at FL more special/important than another at a different track that also needs a home?

They all can’t be saved or end up in the “perfect” home… There are simply too many horses and not enough GOOD homes that can AFFORD to take on a horse right now. Heck, I’d give a great home to any of these horses… but I can’t AFFORD to. Then I know people who can afford to, but don’t give a good home. It’s all relevant.

I guess since I work for a breeder, I have an idea of how their operations are run… and while they would feel bad declining helping a horse they had bred, it just might not be feesible for them to take on 1… let alone the 25-30 that they had bred that year…

Just my 2 cents… it may not be the popular 2 cents, but I think the whole “contacting all the people who have anything to do with this horse” theory is just a tad unreasonable…

up-at-5,

i thought she was super cute! i’m so glad you are taking her!

FYI, i watched the video of her last race and she FELL all the way to the ground dismounting her jockey…might want to ask about that.

Ok I still need a ride for my two. I cant find ANYONE till January…

Does anyone have any ideas???

I can see your point, but these two geldings are not your average runners…look at the number of starts they had, the money they made people. Their former owners/trainers MIGHT Be interested in donating a few dollars to see these horses won’t end up on a dinner plate somewhere. If not, they can ignore the email. Many times, if someone finds out too late that a former horse of theirs ended up in a slaughter house, they are outraged. Wouldn’t it be better to tell them up front what is going on? And as far as I know, no one is suggesting they take these horses back; they are just educating them as to where they are now, and where they will be headed if action isn’t taken.

Did you post on Uship? Did you contact Equine Express or the other shippers listed in a previous post? How about the original shippers…can they do it when their rig is fixed?

did you try Uship.com?

I really, really like Sir Knight Shot. that horse is stunningly well put together, and his legs look quite clean, no ankles and he has great feet

http://fltrainerlist.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1160

I also really like TAKE ME FLYING. that horse is very, very well built, has an adorable look (head, neck, topline). His legs look clean and solid. he has an old scar on his hind leg but im sure he’d be just fine on it; heck hes been fine on it this long!

http://fltrainerlist.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1159

I know I’m currently in a DEADLOCK with my husband (unfortunately in this situation, he’s a horseperson too) over TAKE ME FLYING. He thinks buying him is retail suicide because he’s so small and I secretly agree but am totally in love with that little guys face (horse not husband (for now)).

CAN SOMEONE PRETTY, PRETTY PLEASE TAKE A STICK TO THE TRACK AND GIVE ME AN ACURATE HEIGHT ON TAKE ME FLYING?

FWIW, the volunteers are pretty accurate in their measurements. Last I heard they didn’t have access to a stick, but every horse I saw in person I would say was very close to their advertised height.
And don’t forget, he is only 4…he could easily still be growing!
