George Morris at Carolina Horse Park

He has a facility in both Southern Pines and Vermont.

Yes he does but he has already gone back to Vermont for the summer. Fairly certain the photos he posted from his ride yesterday were in Vermont, as we don’t have that lush of grass here and it doesn’t look like his farm in So. Pines.

Looks like a test case to me. If George plans to bring legal proceedings against the findings he may have to demonstrate a specific ejection from the grounds of a show to bring suit.

Public civility doesn’t mean you like someone. I’m not Denny’s biggest fan myself but he doesn’t speak highly of George.

Off topic, but thank you a million times for volunteering. It’s so discouraging to hear that people were being a$$hats about wearing masks. I had heard such positive news from Plantation last weekend, but I guess one week later and a lot of people are already over it. Let us know where we can ready your Op-Ed when it comes out.

From what we heard from some involved, Plantation is actually why we couldn’t really enforce. Unless the facility puts in stricter rules, people debated the household rule (i.e. if you are in a barn family and rode together to the show, you are a pod and can be together without a mask or social distancing) at Plantation and USEF sides with the less restrictive rules. Now, this is all heresy from conversations with others. Including one woman who got pissy with me because I gave her friend 6 ft of distance in the coffee line because she wasn’t wearing a mask.

Everyone has different opinions of how an event goes, dependent on numerous factors. Other volunteers we spoke to saw no issues all weekend and had a lovely time. I think it depends on your personal feelings about the mask, how observant you are, and what volunteer role you are put into.

I personally will not go back to volunteer until more black and white rules are put into place. I am not a fan of grey space and room for interpretation. I even re read the rules during the time, and had to go an apologize and acknowledge to the family groups that they could indeed hang put together without masks on. There was just too much wiggle room for me to be able to say yes you can or no you can’t.

Weeding through all the he-said she - said drama in this thread. I genuinely would like to know what happens now? Is it clearly defined anywhere? Its not like USEF can ban him again? Do they have strict guidance and rules set forth for shows if an offender were to show up there? I imagine if he is escorted off the property it doesn’t

do much other than taking care of the incident in person on that particular day. He can go to the next show next weekend and do the same, could he not? So at what point do shows eliminate themselves from personally removing him and have him escorted off the premises by authorities? At which point do authorities step in? Is there anything truly in place with USEF that prevents him from doing this over and over again.

Wow. My understanding of the USEF rule was that if you are on competition grounds you must wear a mask unless you are on a horse, period, end of statement. And while I thought that was overkill I figured it was in place to prevent exactly what you are describing.

Social Distancing Enforcer has to take the cake for worst volunteer job ever.

Not to continue to derail the thread, but if you go read the USEF rules, they are not concrete unfortunately. Some places can and have enforced stronger rules, and that is up to the facility. CHP has a COVID plan, but follows the USEF rules and the state rules, and haven’t made their own. They had temperature checkers, and everything was spaced out appropriately, we had masks for people as well. Just my opinion l, but only following the USEF rules leaves an incredible amount of grey area to play in, which makes enforcing any rules challenging. The park absolutely followed the rules as they and the TD read them, and did what they could. USEF needs to make the rules clearer IMHO

I think Tryon has put the rule that if you are on a horse you didn’t have a mask, off a horse mask on, and I like that rule. It makes it clear cut. I also wore my mask on Saturday from 9am until 330pm. I didn’t bother to remove it while I was running to do jump crew etc. I survived, didn’t pass out, etc. I had an equifit mask on til I sweated through it, and switched to a dreamers and schemers mask.

I just want to be clear that I think CHP did everything appropriately with regards to the GM situation and COVID. These facilities can only do what they can as far as they have backing from USEF, or choose to enforce their own rules. With it being the first show back, they worked extremely hard to get it all together for the competitors.

Anyone who is competing and fails to wear a mask when required should be banned until the end of 2020. No excuses.

No, you do not need to wear masks at all times. They only need to be worn when you are within 6 foot of another person.

“All individuals must practice social distancing (or physical distancing) at all times while on the competition grounds by staying at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from any person who is not a member of their immediate household. Members of the same household are still required to wear masks or face coverings when there is a possibility of being within six feet of any other individuals, including members of their own household. *Exception – social distancing is not required while competing (including warm-up) in driving classes where more than one participant is seated in the horse-drawn carriage or cart.”

If he has been told that he is not allowed on the grounds and he does go onto the grounds perhaps he could be arrested and prosecuted for tresspassing.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking, but I believe there is a warning process from the facility owner/manager through the police. Like they would have to ask him to leave, he’d have to refuse, the police would need to be called, remove him and issue a formal trespass warning. Then if he came back - at any point forward - they could call the police again, have them note he’s already been officially warned, and then they could arrest him. I find it unlikely in the current pandemic environment that they are arresting and and jailing an 85yo man for a trespass issue. they’re going to take him off property and refer it to the prosecutor. Many police departments are not adding to their jail population unless they simply have no choice or the crime is particularly heinous. Then the prosecutor would have to determine if it rose to the level that they were willing to take it to court.

Thank you! This is an update from the first time I read the USEF action plan, I’m diving back into it now.

Those might be the USEF guidelines, but that doesn’t prevent individual shows from making more black and white rules about wearing masks at all times (unless mounted) to make enforcement more simple.

It’s interesting to read the guidelines from different shows to compare and contrast them.

Good lord woman open a book once in a while that’s not in the fiction section. Yes, police get called to remove people from private property. That’s the protocol.

How exactly do you think trespassing charges work?
