Has anyone else started reading the book “Off Course” that was just written and released about the USEF?

Yeah that awful awful fan membership that I’d get for free when I’d go to Rolex with my mom 10 years ago  b/c the USEF gave it away. So terrible to promote the ability to watch the sport online via livestreaming and maybe expose more people to it b/c even when you had to pony up $$$ it was a relatively affordable $25.

Maybe the competing membership is declining b/c there’s just not that many horse people with the means/ability/need to do USEF recognized shows?

Well are they USEF shows or not?

B/c SafeSport only actually is effective when it’s a USEF show IIRC. So yeah, it’s not gonna stop Joe Blow from showing up to the local Whoopsie Fart Doodle Schooling Show that isn’t USEF sanctioned.

Last thought. Am I good enough for this sport. Yes indeed. Been in it since I was 7. I’m almost 60. Still showing. Riding. Running a small barn of retired riding horses and my show horse. Have a lovely trainer. Do all my own things. Who is the problem ? Not brown people or LBGTQ+ nope. Not a bit. Concerns expressed here are laughable. So I will continue to ride and train and show. And not moan about boogeymen that don’t exist. I will never show at the upper echelons but I enjoy my horse. I show year round and I am the human who mucks the stalls and mows the field and owns the property that I call heaven.

They are USEF shows and it’s actually a very public suspension that has been covered on here in the past couple months. He’s above the rules and “in” with the cronies.

If you can’t watch Steph Curry’s 3s and find them as “elegant” as any well executed dressage test then IDK what to tell anyone:

I get basketball ain’t everyone’s thing but I feel even a non-fan can appreciate this. Well, I’d hope.

Oh whoops, LeBron might have too many tattoos for some of y’alls taste. And these people might not be pasty enough for some viewers’ liking.

Who is it?

If the person is on the suspended list, why wouldn’t you name names?

Can you link to the source for that info? Thanks.

This is the author’s Amazon bio:

“Judy Berkley has been a published writer since 1984. In addition to her freelance work, Berkley was a daily columnist at the Oakland Tribune newspaper in northern California. However, she found political correctness so damaging and restrictive to free speech, she resigned her position.”

Says it all.

This! We’re actually lucky to be able to do a sport that doesn’t have classes based on sex and whoever you choose to be doesn’t interfere with your ability to ride well.

Why does it matter if we invite underrepresented people to ride? To make the sport more accessible? Are you afraid they’d beat you? Too much competition? There’s no legitimate reason why we shouldn’t make the sport more accessible.

Yet despite his “very public” suspension you don’t call him out to the show officials or name him here. If this is true, you are part of the problem.

Now there’s a show I wish I had attended. Was first prize a Whoopy Cushion? :joy: My sisters horse would have won hands down in the farting category. Every time he cantered he farted. Pretty talented if I do say so myself.

This book needs to be filed in the dumb, dumber, and dumbest section of a closed library.

This just reminded me one time this lesson horse (older Trakehener gelding) I was riding unexpectedly did one of those dramatic “put head waaay down towards ground” type moves b/c he had to fart. No other horse I remember interacting with at that point in my life (I was in my early 20s. Horse was also in his early 20s) ever pulled a move quite like that so I was like “uh what’s going on” then he let one rip and I was like “oh.”

I know many people like the OP in this business. She says she knows me…if you know me you know I am one of those “woke liberals” And yes it has cost me jobs. And I don’t care

It seems unfortunate to me that people are assuming the OP is the author, and attributing the author’s opinions to the OP, when (some of) what the OP is actually saying does have merit.

it does seem like USEF and EC are using terms like DEI to appear progressive, but their actions don’t back up that they are really interested in real changes to becoming more inclusive, just like they claim to be about reducing abuse in the sport (both to humans and equines), but other than when Safesport steps in, what are USEF and EC actually doing?

It seems to me that the OP wanted to use the book as a talking point more than that they agree with all the points of the author.

I also think that people claiming modern sport’s history is military is ignoring how much the sport has changed since those days - modern showing seems very far removed from that history, and modern sport and rules likely were shaped by the wealthy vs by the military.

It’s so funny that they’re obsessed with the T part, given that horse sport is coed…

Whenever I see the words constitutional rights being written in context of a private club, I know I’m in for uninformed opinions and poorly reasoned conclusions based on faulty logic.
