ABC 7 I-Team learns identities of people reportedly behind Helen Brach’s murder
By Chuck Goudie March 31, 2005 ”" Federal law enforcement authorities say it took ten people to pull off one of Chicago’s most mysterious murders-the long unsolved disappearance of Helen Brach, heir to the Brach Candy fortune. The ABC7 I-Team has learned the identities of those people that federal agents said are responsible for Brach’s death
Helen Voorhees Brach was put to death by people she knew and once trusted, according to one of the ten alleged participants who has admitted involvement and is now cooperating with authorities.
It was a frigid February day in 1977 that would be her last on earth. The informant told federal agents – and the agents now believe – that the beginning of the end for Brach that day was at the hands of a Skokie police sergeant.
A policeman, two mobsters, some powerful horse owners and their stable hands and Helen Brach’s Butler were behind the murder of the candy heiress. That’s the story according to horse trainer Joe Plemmons, whom federal agents say has unlocked the mystery of Helen Brach’s disappearance.
When the I-Team talked to Plemmons a few weeks ago in Florida, he declined to name names. In law enforcement reports filed in federal court had the names Plemmons provided blacked out. However, the I-Team has reviewed a clean copy.
According to the un-redacted ATF report on the Plemmons’ interviews:
The Reported Masterminds: Silas Jayne and his nephew Frank Jayne, Jr. According to the interviews with Plemmons summarized in the ATF’s report, the notorious Jaynes had Brach murdered to prevent her from exposing how they had cheated her out of millions of dollars during crooked horse deals.
Silas Jayne is dead. Frank Jr. is serving an Illinois prison sentence for arson and has always denied any role in the Brach murder.
The Butler: Jack Matlick, Brach’s trusted major domo betrayed her, according to Plemmons. Authorities believe Natlick drove Brach home from a physical at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and put her in the hands of her killers. Matlick lives in Butler, Pennsylvania, in a senior citizen building. When the I-Team paid him a visit recently, Matlick refused to comment and slammed his front door.
The Reported Killers: There were two actual killers according to the interviews summarized in the report: then Skokie Police Sergeant Lee Reiter and the informant, horseman Joe Plemmons, himself.
Sergeant Reiter was frequently a Jayne family bodyguard and a close ally. In the federal report, Plemmons said that the Jayne’s paid Reiter between $350,000 and $750,000 to beat Brach unconscious at her home in suburban Glenview. Then, he says Reiter rolled her up in a blanket and that Frank Jayne Jr. and a stable worker transported her to a Tinley Park horse stable.
Plemmons told authorities that he saw Brach’s battered body in the car trunk and thought she was dead until she moaned. Plemmons says stable workers, brothers Ken and Curt Hansen, were with him and that Curt pointed a shotgun at him, handed him a revolver and forced him to fire two shots into Brach through the blanket.
Ex-policeman Reiter now lives in Mexico and has always denied any role in the Brach murder.
The Reported Disposal Team: According to Plemmons, the disposal team included himself, Jayne Jr., and the Hansen brothers, along with two members of the infamous Spilotro organized crime family. Plemmons says Tony “The Ant” Spilotro and his brother, Victor P., arranged for the cremation of Brach’s remains inside a northwest Indiana steel mill. The Feds I know are very upset with me and have tapped my lines and probably bugged my house. I asked a lawyer what are the chances they are following everyting on my computer and he said " 1000% " I am sorry know is not the time. My life could be in danger. I regularly say to friends so the Feds here it that I have tapes and writings with people and in many places. If anything funny ora little strange happens to me like an accident or I get killed. There will be many tapes and writting released that will expoes them. I have also done extensive research of what has happened to some people in my situation. They hate me and that repoter does also.

By the way all of my talking to you are my words. I have written no script ahead of time. At night I sometimes drink more than I should. I had a funny feeling after my families New Year was brought in in such a strange way with the Headlines on the news " The Helen Brach Murder has been solved " I soon made researching this investigation the top priortity in my life. I admit this feeling I had seemed to smell of something very rotten. So here we are 8 months later and I am very glad I went with my gut feeling because we have uncovered a lot of sick lies about my father!!!

I know from your posts you believe Joe lied…but on what basis…at some point a person has to tell the truth…why do you think Joe lied (ok, besides his steller history of lying

Chuck Goudie of Channel 7 Eyewitness News (the Chicago ABC affiliate) was tracking the killer Andrew Cunanan a few years ago, and located the flophouse room the guy had been renting. Instead of calling the police, he started rifling through things, drawers and such, possibly disturbing evidence. His latest bit of sweeps-related stupidity came in May 2001, when he went to Las Vegas to cover the story of an 11-year-old Indiana girl who ran away with her 28-year-old school principal. After the pair had been found, Goudie weaseled his way into the motel room the pair had last rented. The police had gone over it and the motel had cleaned it. But Goudie found a condom wrapper in the garbage can, and almost went nuts on the air, proclaiming loudly on camera that somehow the police had missed this “key evidence” while sweeping the premises. It turns out the pair had never even entered the room. It also turns out that the principal had in fact been having relations with the girl, and Goudie made sure to turn up the volume on the sleazier side of the story. Also, while the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers finally stopped printing the girl’s name and picture (having done so originally only to possibly help in locating her) in order to avoid any further invasions of privacy, Goudie’s station and others continued plastering the poor girl’s face on the screen.

And finally there is the whole issue of deliberate leaks, and who gets them and how accurate they are…
At one point, Channel 7’s Chuck Goudie appeared to put out inaccurate information he had gathered regarding the investigation of Lead 80. Zuley, who knew Goudie from contact in Chicago, offered to call Goudie to straighten out the facts. He was roundly told to keep out of it.
From the beginning, key members of the command had chosen favorites among the press corps to leak information to. Jay Levine was consistently stroked by the Task Force and was also liked by Bratcher”"they had other favorites too. Goudie was not one of the chosen. Goudie had taken a very hard line toward the Task Force and was therefore widely detested by the command. One witness close to the Task Force told us, “they hated Goudie and posted his picture up on the wall next to the mug shots of wanted criminals.”
Zuley’s attempts to provide Goudie with correct information were heavily criticized by management members of the Task Force, and Chief Bratcher maintains that Zuley was in fact fired from the Task Force for leaking to the press. Information on lead 80 did not reach the media, however, until September of 1993. Zuley had left the Task Force in February of that year.

At first Snowbird, I wasn’t going to answer your statements. But after thinking it over, well lets just say I need too. You feel you know this person from an email. He/she could be Joe Plemmons for all you know. Or any of a myriad of other players involved in this. Where oh where did he/she ever state they had read the court documents, looked at the proceedings and dug anything other than the news clippings we have our selves dug up? Did they say they hired a detective to investigate this? If so please point me to the docs. Did they investigate any of the accusations of which was printed in the paper? From what has been put up on this board, there’s little to see other than he’s trying to defend his father. And no one, said that was wrong. Don’t assume, you don’t me or any other person here. Well, maybe you do?

Well, they used a psychotic who loves the limelight and attention to make it sound as they said “The Helen Brach Murder is solved”.
The lull of the lack of further attention, one: makes them look good and two:if they have a further plan which at this point seems unlikely the culprit might be confident enough and bold enough to do something to get caught.
Unless they know who inherited the Jayne games and want to catch them. In that case Plemmons and Holly could be bait for the big fish.

If you lived in Chicago and saw things the way I do living in the middle of it all, when the Repoter who ran sick oneside stories about my Dad day after day in the news." The HELEN BRACH MURDER HAS BEEN SOLVED" and then a few days later The Steven Manning verdict was reached you might look at it like I did and DO!!! That there is a GOD and I thought at the time and still do that GOD was attempting to shed light on these lies showing what these people will do to innocent people. The timming of what the Feds did to Steven Manning could not of been more perfect!!! This story ran on every Chicago news station! If you look at the dates of Gowdy"s sick missinformation and or lies you will see it all happened at a perfect time!!! I was printing copies of this story that day and E-Mailing it to people investigating this DISGRACE!!! Keep up the good work! I think we have many brilliant minds on this. You are doing Great!!! Cashew that is exactly what I think but that would ruin Pleemons story if they exumed the body and found out it was Helen. They would not convict all the people they want.It might soon happen if it is true because their new story is about dead.At least we will know were Helen is.
NiteMare your last question about the private investgator. I will only say that you can find him in an article on the computer saying he thinks Matlick killed Helen Brach. His name is Rizzo and he has investigated this murder for many years!
