How SafeSport operates. And we should all be scared.

You are utterly ridiculous.

First off, Safe Sport does not have any sort of “clause” that allows people who have been CLEARED of accusations to be found “guilty.”

To be found guilty of a FELONY in CRIMINAL court, a statute of limitations will apply. As will procedural rules with respect to evidence that a jury can consider, and evidence of prior bad acts. The legal standard is “proof beyond a reasonable doubt.” Thus, many people accused of felonies are not CONVICTED for the applicable crime. Because obtaining a conviction in our criminal system, and depriving someone of their liberty is challenging. Very challenging. As it should be.

There are people all over the country RIGHT NOW that prosecutors and police SINCERELY BELIEVE are guilty of FELONIES. But no charges have been brought against these people… because prosecutors and police don’t have enough evidence to obtain a criminal conviction in a court of law.

Just because charges werent broyght shainst an individual DOES NOT MEAN THEY WERE CLEARED.

On to Safe Sport. The investigators can look at all sorts of evidence, and the standard of proof is simply “a preponderance of the evidence.” The most severe penalty is that someone will be banned for life from participating in recognized competitions and other events affiliated with a given sport’s NGO.

No one who has committed suicide was killed by Safe Sport. Suicide is tragic. But stop oversimplifying it.

GHM or any of these other people can indeed go work in another field. He will not have any sort of criminal conviction on his record that he has to disclose when applying for a job. Is his reputation in tatters? Yes indeed. Is he pretty much done with giving clinics? Well - yes. For USEF and FEI people. But if he is guilty of having sexual with boys as young as 13 who were his students and living with him… he deserves the penalty. It is what it is. The equestrian world is better off with him GONE. Right now. People who are his friends can continue to be his friends… people are complicated, and this stuff is going to mean more big names go down before this rocky period is in the rear view mirror. It’s sad. I’m not going to judge people who have been longtime friends of his and are privately supporting him. But people who are publicly whipping up mobs in support of GM and taking some sort of “principaled stance” in opposition to Safe Sport? What in the world are they thinking? This law ISN’T going away. If you TRULY preferred the good old days when predators ruled the sport and kids were nervous… ok. Retire already, and enjoy reminiscing with your friends. Go do something else. It’s a good economy out there, and you are fortunate that you don’t have a criminal conviction on your record.

I don’t know which poster is more idiotic. This one or the one on the dressage shooting thread who thinks Safe Sport somehow has control over evictions.

There are moments when I wish that COTH would bring back options other than ‘“like” for threads. The face palm 🤦🏼”â™€ï¸ one would be especially nice.

Referring to the post that Denali6298 quoted.

How are you guys getting the face palm to appear? Wait, let me try.

🤦*♀️

Omg, I can’t believe that works and I had no idea until now! I would have been using this emoji for years on this BB. Lol.

“And we should all be scared”.

Isn’t it interesting that most of us aren’t scared? Not at all. Not even a little bit.

Now, process that for a while.

@skydy I think those of us that see no issue with Safe Sport are the ones not committing crimes.

Yes, I was hoping that the OP might realize after some thought, that people aren’t “scared” of rules that they aren’t, and have no intention of, breaking.

There seems to be a bizarrely large number of people who think that Roseanne Roseannadanna is the person answering the reporting phones at SafeSport, and she’s passing the information along to Enid Strict, The Church Lady to lay down the punishments.

You are my hero!

No, you aren’t. But you are distinctly ignorant of US civil and criminal legal requirements. They are very different animals. SS operates under civil doctrine If the evidence is sufficient it will be submitted to authorities for criminal investigation when GM will be allowed to defend himself in a court of law. (That thing you seem to think applies here).

I truly feel dumber for reading your drivel. I suggest a better education of the system to prevent looking even more ignorant.

Gage and Coughlin committed suicide because all the people who thought they were such great guys were going to find out they got their rocks off by banging children.

They did get due process. People screaming about the constitution and due process just look so amazingly ignorant. You do not have a constitutional right to belong to a club. Within that club, due process is whatever that club says it is.

Also cause it keeps being said and I think it’s really important to keep saying

Sexual predators are not a protected class

Pedophiles are not a protected class.

This is the height of absurdity.

A good name is hard to get back after false accusations, cleared or not. It’s a sin to ruin someone’s good name. and in this country, we are supposed to be INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty, not the other way around. This ruining of people based on “she said” has got to stop.

Oh good grief.

It’s even harder to get back after an 18 month investigation by trained investigators finds you guilty of sexual misconduct with multiple minors. Or if you write down the things that you did.

Or at least it should be.
