Hypothetical Sport Horse Breeding From Today's TB Racing Stallions

Here in France and Belgium we have a TB stallion who ‘worked’ (very very well I might add) as a race horse … but his progeny ist doing well in eventing and show-jumping …
Luso : http://sporthorse-data.com/d?d=luso&sex=&color=&dog_breed=any&birthyear=&birthland=

and in 2015, I used this one : Simplex : http://sporthorse-data.com/d?i=10616225. He is now stationned in Hungary at Babolna stud

A little more room in the throatlatch would be nice but I like him.

Any time you find Vieux Manoir, you’ve probably found a good jumping line. His tail female line goes to Queenie, one of the best steeplechasing lines in history. She has been recognized, even among TB racing people, as a line that jumps.

As to Definite Article, he has been recognized as the paradigm of the Herod line today.

I’ve always loved Robin des Champs, who stands in Ireland with one of the premier Irish stallions for chasing whose name escapes me at the moment–maybe Presenting? However, he is not available to sport breeders.

Interesting that Shirocco has been moved to the Rathbury Stud’s National Hunt Roster.
Mr. Broad Blade by Broad Brush. I don’t know what you are looking for in conformation, but he’s pretty and I think he has a good pedigree for sport:
http://www.magalifarms.com/stalions/view/13/Mr.+Broad+Blade
I kinda got stuck on this one. He has some nice bone, long legs, and great feet. Only thing I see first off is I’d prefer more drop in the stifle for more of a carrying stride.
I have a Broad Brush mare, so a half sister to Mr. Broad Blade (even though the TB purists don’t like that term with same-sire horses). She has legs and feet just like him; big hard hooves and substantial bone. She also has a huge walk. Big girl. Like my mare, Mr. Broad Blade has beautiful shoulders and depth through the chest. Great temperament as well.

Although Viney mentioned speed on dirt as not being a good criteria for an eventer, the Broad Brush horses are very tough and long lasting. And he is not just a sprinter; several stakes wins were over a mile and 1/16. I am a big fan although he has not had much exposure to prove himself in central California. He is just about at the end of his breeding career I think.

Henrythenavigator had a few horses, IIRC, listed through FLF or Suffolk a few years ago. Really nice horses.

Hey Beowulf, since you and I seem to have some of the same tastes in stallions, have you seen Heavy Breathing? Full brother to Fost Giant, and, while he doesn’t have the race record, but I find him more appealing.

love Simplex’s pedigree.

NO!! Unfortunate name huh?

This guy?

Haven’t seen any of his get before… What’s he like? Does he throw nice movers like FG? He looks young in that pic - does he have FG’s limb substance? I like Heavy’s neck more.

Yep, that’s him! He’s only been at stud since 2014, so his kids are only yearlings at most. I haven’t seen any of his get yet, we’ll see if any come through the fall sale here in Saratoga. He is only 7, seems very sweet, has the same sort of bone as FG, but I agree, better neck, and the pieces just work better for me. The blood horse pic of FG is a really good pic of him, I’ve never seen him look that good or as well put together in person, IMHO. you should hit some of the stallions shows this winter, Beowulf. Keanu stud has FG, stonesider, cosmonaut, Normandy invasion (who I kinda like, want to see what he matures into), and usually the same weekend Dutchess view holds thier show as well. This year they stood heavy breathing, Bellamy road, big brown and a stallion I really like, marsh side.

I would love, love, love to… but not in NY anymore… Keep forgetting to change my location.

We definitely have similar taste[s] because I looooooove Marsh Side… I love his pedigree, I love his face, I love his conformation… wasn’t there a thread recently about a nice prospect by him? I’ll have to do some digging… I really like Pleasant Colony and what he produces, even though he’s not immediate in MS I can see the influence.

I have a really cute weanling filly by MS out of a Sky Mesa mare (love pulpit and his sons!) sitting out in my back field right now. My partners (dressage people who dabble in Tb’s) and I figure that even if she doesn’t run, we’ve got a really nice prospect for sport!

I’ve been intrigued by MS for a while. Don’t love the Mr. P so close but his dam side and record in 12-14F races outweighs it for me. I would love to breed my mare to him but the stars aren’t aligning. He has a 3 year old, “USS Marsh Side,” who’s shown at Training Level in recognized dressage shows in NC this year … I saw him at one last month and he was incredibly quiet. Still looked a little immature (still good enough for scores in the 70s) but I think he’ll be breathtaking when he’s 5.

Elles, I like your picks!

Another subject completely. I’ve seen some Tale of The Cat yearlings at Keeneland and other sales. Most looked nice. Of course these are the few that are presented at public auction.

In a post (long ago) I asked about Tale of the Cat, and if his conformation appeared in person as it does online. The answer was yes. He sires some good race horses however his physical appearance and temperament would have me backing off quickly. No matter what mare he was put to I would not take the risk that he might reproduce himself.

Any opinions why he is popular? His successful get are well recognized but obviously we don’t see the culls. His physical would be too much of a risk for me. What am I missing? He has a middle range fee. Not cheap.

This summer we rented a cottage at this farm: http://www.withyslade.co.uk/ and: http://www.withysladecottages.co.uk/
This is a picture I took from Indian Haven: https://myalbum.com/album/jE55HoH9pKdY
I could see his stable from the window of our cottage.
