What an amazing saga. I opened and read it all today, so no suspense–just enough to keep me rooted in one spot till the last page.
“Bad” points reflect results that are part of a horse’s USEF record, but that can’t count toward year end or zone awards; this is what happens when a horse’s entry blank information doesn’t match his USEF recording, or when the points can’t count as zone points for whatever reason (location of show, not matching up with owner’s zone, etc).
I guess the big mystery, and the one I can not figure out how to unravel, is… how did he get from the Rome WEG in’98 to FL in 2004?
ETA I am assuming that the USEF records online are only back to 2004… can one call them to get results before 2004? Where is that data I wonder? How long do they keep that data?
Is it possible to look him up under FEI? Would any international results [either Aus or Europe] be there somewhere?
How cow, what a life this horse has had. Looks like he’s been sold multiple times in the last few years. This is exactly why I don’t think I can ever sell a horse. :no:

Tazer you are a wonderful person going to buy this horse! wish i could do things like this! and i wonder if the former owners would want him back now?
its really sad how horses can go from the top of the sport to being neglected. makes me scared to think of the horses i sold and lost track of. i hate selling my horses but i can really only afford one.
this thread has been a wonderful one to follow. keep up with the updates on what happened to this poor horse. he looks so gorgeous in those pictures!

Maybe I’m jaded, but that is less of a mystery to me… once they’ve served, started slipping down the ranks due to lameness or whatever, started aging,… where does everyone think they go?

i am curious how the horse fell through the cracks, especially a horse that seems to have served his owners so well. i would think that the owner in the picture probably would have cared about the horse’s well being. so how did the horse end up so quickly being neglected. those pictures were from 2007
i think most people wouldnt want that to happen to their animals. but lets face it its too expensive and time consuming to care for too many horses. and if no one would sell their animals, then no one would get to ride someone else’s nice horse.
wouldnt a new owner if the horse went lame and they didnt want it anymore, first contact the old owner?
it just makes me so sad to think that this could happen to any horse sold. the good ones or the bad ones.
Well, I dunno’ I still have my first/only horse and since he is retired, I no longer ride.
Another one of my friends had a wonderful A circuit Jumper named Flint. When he no longer could handle the shows she tried retiring him [but he hated it] and then she donated him to a therapeutic riding program to use there if he suited. He did not, but instead of contacting her for her to take him back they used him for shows and he died after peeing dark [tie-up?]

Mr. Studly has 52 pages of show records with big time wins under his belt. His owner worked with his old trainer to ease him back down the ranks. Fortunately, that brought him to us. When he was 20, he was doing 2’6" stuff with my #1 daughter. Now he’s 22 and he’s been retired to our farm. He’s living large - mentoring my baby and heading out on the occasional trail ride. And, did I mention that his owners have been down from New York City twice to visit him in the south GA boonies?
Don’t forget that we have several members on this BB who have retirement farms that are full of happy and healthy retired horses, and there are plenty of us with old horses you’ll never hear about living out their lives in comfort.

The last recorded owner rides with a local outfit here in WNY… a VERY big name barn. My friend groomed for them all last winter/spring. A few others I know ride there… I’m going to get in touch with them and see if they might recognize this horse.
I am happy to weigh in on the part I know, but only if Tazer wants me to.
How is he doing, by the way?!
VXF-I was there last night shortly after he arrived for a few hours- he seemed genuinely unperturbed by the whole move/new place/new horses and is such a sweet horse.
November Rain
I knew this horse when he first started his showjumping career in 1993, after a short lived racing career. It was the same time I started my own off-track TB (eventually-turned) World Cup showjumper, which is not an uncommon thing in Australia. He was a wonderfully brave and careful horse right from the start, and we other riders always dreaded seeing him on the draw (posted order) and knew we would have to bring our best to the ring. He won many classes as a youngster and was always destined for the Grand Prix ring. Everybody loved that horse, and he loved the crowds cheering for him as he won jump-off after jump-off. He had a very successful career on the Australian scene which lead to the WEG in Rome, where many other countries were interested in him. In the end, he was bought by a US buyer (which was usual for alot of horses leaving the shores of Australia in competition… to never return) and from all we heard was a huge success amongst the sea of warmbloods both bred here and imported from Europe. I have known many horses in Australia that were “famous” and sold overseas, but I had not seen many again in my travels, until I saw November Rain at Keswick Horse Show in May 2008 - I instantly recognised him from the distinct Australian shoulder freeze brand. I approached the girl who had ridden him in the class and asked “Is that horse from Australia and is his name November Rain?”. She replied in the affirmative and gave me a brief history of her involvement with him… I just couldn’t believe that here I was tens of thousands of miles from home watching a horse that I grew up with, from the small town of Bega in New South Wales renowned for making cheese. He is a magical horse, and I could go on and on about his achievements, but instead I wish the new owner blessings and prayers in the good deed you are doing… he most certainly deserves the dignified retirment you will give him. For all that have been following this story, if nothing else take away that heart is everything in the world of showjumping, and no matter what your horses background, they have a chance if they have the heart to do it! Please give NR a big pat for me!

That is so true, most of mine are retired, in their twenties and just hanging out! I have several friends that also have older ones. It is true though, it takes the same amount of feed to feed an old horse as it does a young one and twice the vet bills!
