Interesting TB stallion on Canter out of the Spotted Beauty line. NEEDS HELP!

Hey, CANTER PA here. I have to say I was completely disheartened to read these posts. CANTER volunteers work diligently to create a win/win situation for both responsible race trainers/owners and sport horse buyers in search of quality prospects. A great deal of our work is in building relationships between the two entities – often all that is spoken regarding this transaction is that the racing industry is bad, you can’t trust trainers, etc. but I assure you that in the many years I have been doing this I warn race trainers about buyers 10xs more often than the reverse. This is a two way street; yes, you are helping the racing industry by buying prospects who are no longer competitive BUT you are also given the rare opportunity to find superior prospects for ridiculously low prices by race trainers – please do not forget that.

I appreciate peoples’ interest in wanting to help a particular horse but do you understand how damaging rumors are to our program and others? I do not even understand how conclusions could have been made regarding this horse being lame, ruined, tortured, destined for slaughter or in need of euthanasia. Honestly, it makes my brain hurt - this horse jogged out soundly for his listing (as described in his ad) – he is impeccably bred, of nice size, great condition, limited starts, GREY and reasonably priced – he is not what I would consider “at risk.” As a sport horse rider, I am embarrassed and disgusted by anyone attacking one of our trainers who is doing the right thing by this horse. I sincerely hope people can see the big picture of how vicious rumors only serve to hurt the horse you claim to help… and future horses!

Also, please do not post this horse has a home until he arrives at your farm. I can vouch for a number of horses who do not find homes because someone on COTH posts that they are going to buy the horse and never do. If you are seriously interested in a horse, I am always happy to help – I want nothing more than for our horses to find good homes, but I will not be part of a witch hunt and I will not stand by while our trainers are disrespected for making good choices.

That said, tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I know I will sit down to dinner being grateful for all the people who have made it possible to transition OTTBs, from both the sport horse and racing communities.

Sincerely,
Sue Smith

Sue,

I am sure we all appreciate your sentiments however for my part in all of this was to find him a good home period. Based on some of the comments made on the eventing forum there were folks there that seemed to have knowledge of this particular trainer…and they were not postive.

No one said he needed to be euthanized or wasnt sound - especially not me - I said that would be the best thing for him IF for some reason he was either 1. not able to stay pasture sound IF there was an issue and 2. its certainly better than a one way trip to canada.

Others just stated to make sure and get a pre-purchase as they too had bad interactions with some of the trainers (not necassarily these).

Also in all honesty I am not sure how you can truly believe that all trainers are above board and make good choices. Out of the 5 CANTER horses I have had only one came as represented. Partly my fault for not doing a pre purchase but I can guarantee you they are not all honest and forthright.

I can also vouch from the other end that most COTHER’s who say they are wiling to take a horse do so.

I started this thread orginally because I love the horse and his bloodlines… It was never meant to turn into a train wreck - I wanted him to possilby have a chance of staying a stallion since he is so well bred, if you go back and look at my original post you will see a laundry list of why his pedigree is so great for sporthorses.

None of this was done out of maliciousnes, or wanting to start a train wreck.

I am sure he will find a good home with CHSatwork or Goodmorning I believe was also interested.

We all appreciate all the hard work that the CANTER folks do but the COTHERS do a lot as well.

Time for everyone to step back and take a deep breath. I am sure something good with come of all this.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

No one said any one person was trying to cause trouble- the threads were turning quickly into a train wreck though-so hopefully this is back on track and if someone wants to buy this guy, give the trainer a call!

I am ready able and willing to go pick this boy up. I just found out I have the next 9 days off work. I can go at anytime. Just say the word.

Though I will not pay $750 for him. I just picked up a six horse trailer full of horses with the same breeding all sound and healthy for free. I can also go pick up another six, same breeding, again free. I am willing to give this boy a soft place to land but $750 is in no way a reasonable price for him because he’s grey. One of the freebies in this group is the same exact color grey.

Then it would seem that this horse is still up for sale!!

I’d take him in a second and can pay for him - but no can do with the upkeep with a pasture puff, a leftover 30K vet bill and one in training.

I “think” Goodmorning called on him so hopefully she gets a call back.

No one ever said he wasn’t. Where is anyone seeing that in this thread? This is exactly why I’m NOT a people person. People are idiots.

Anyone who would pay money for a questionable horse because he’s grey is an idiot. Connect with a reputable trainer. They will call you and let you know what they have for free. Sound and healthy, most with xrays. I will take a questionable horse for free (not so much free it would be gas money and then diagnostics when he got home) and hope for the best, but putting money up front is a little out there. That would be why I stay away from the retired race horse organizations and only deal with the breeders themselves.

I did … :frowning: - I said WHOOHOO he has a home or something along that line - so that was my fault.

If all else fails and the trainers smarten up he does have a home. You did not say he is definitely going to CHS. It is an option. That is all that was said. Nothing concrete anywhere. And it is an option. I will go pick him up and do whatever he needs for him. I will not pay $750 for him. It cost me less than that in gas to pick up the six free ones that I knew were 100% sound, sane and healthy.

I am sure that the COTHer’s appreciated your willingness to take this guy, CHS- but somewhere along the thread, a nice young horse for sale became an “at risk needs a place now free” horse- it sounds like you have your hands full with the ones you have just picked up, and this guy is still for sale. I am sure at that age, size, color, and price, he will find a home soon…

The folks that do the listings at the various tracks work hard for no money to get these horses out in the public eye, so they can find homes. It often takes some convincing and a level of trust to be allowed in certain barns. Maligning trainers or griping about misrepresentation isn’t helping the cause. Any time you buy a horse off the internet, you are taking a chance. Do your homework, get a PPE, and have fun with your new horse when you find him or her!

Really? I have my hands full? How many horses do I have? Quite the assumption there. Four out of the six horses have been placed in excellent homes. I don’t keep them. They come here to stay until a great home comes along. Oh and I don’t ask an “adoption” fee. They are all given away. Yes I do this on my own dime. The two that are still here from this last load are staying here, that was the plan from the beginning. I don’t have horses long unless they need rehab/gelding/whatever. I have many connections which is why trainers send their horses to me. They know I’m not in it to make a buck. I’m in it truly for the horses.

Amazing how harsh things can be said and how quickly the subject is forgotten.

Young horse with an above average pedigree in need of a home. Lets not forget the subject

Do you make a sour puss face when you are handed lemons or do you smile and sell the freaking lemonaid!

I have had one wonderful experience after another with my OTTB finds…oh some came with bumps and bruises and an issue here or there…but all have found WONDEFUL homes and some I will keep forever.

The latest one we “adopted” came with red flags…but it was our free choice to bring him home…no one held a gun to our heads. Maybe it was just our way of repaying our boy for all the heart he had given and we wanted to be SURE that he lived a long happy life.

To each his own people…and whomever ends up wth the young horse, I wish them the best and the most success.

Gems have been found in FAR worse situations

Happy Thanksgiving COTH posters!

Hey CHS, you don’t know me and I certainly don’t know you- I have no bone to pick with you or your program- I don’t know anything about it or you! I just know that this horse is for sale by his connections, period. The thread got off track, not through any fault of yours. Best of luck to you and thank you for helping the horses you are helping.

Interestingly, there is also a Spotted Beauty-line mare available right now. See:

Now, back to finding this guy a home . . .

I have added a needs help to the title - it just doesnt seem fair that at 3 all he has had is misery and now maybe a one way trip to canada

I am willing to chip in some $$ to help him find a home.[/QUOTE]

EquineLVR, we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I do not question your motive to find this horse a home, but the issue I have relates to technique. I am asking you to see past the emotional drama, like your quote above, and stick to the facts. Any race trainer, regardless of circumstances, should not feel negatively targeted for trying to find her horses good homes - why close off the best option for those horses to reach sport horse buyers?

Let’s focus our energy on something positive, arguing is too time-consuming; the grey needs a home and we actually have a handful of horses that could really use some extra interest - in particular, Sharp Code, a wicked CUTE older mare who needs a very light riding home. It’d be the highlight of my year to find her a good home!

Please feel free to e-mail me; I, generally, am not able to read COTH daily so it’s a faster way to reach me. canterpa@canterusa.org

Thanks, Happy Thanksgiving!

I agree we are going to have to agree to disagree - based off of information from folks I know and trust he seemed like he was a good candidate for that one way trip to canada… I did not want to see that happen so I did what I had to do to try and find him a home. Its not the first time on COTH that we have come together to try and find particular horses homes.

As mentioned before its not as if I have not contributed heavily to Canter myself…I believe in it but I will not believe that all trainers are altruistic in their motives.

However I am sure we can find a way to come together and work at what matters most and thats finding good homes for all of them.

This mare has a wonderful pedigree…

I love Ack Ack breeding

I had a TB granddaughter that consistently produced upper level eventers, when bred to a number of different stallions. Eventer breeders should look at that mare. “Heart & try” was their first name, middle name, last name, and nickname.
