Hey, CANTER PA here. I have to say I was completely disheartened to read these posts. CANTER volunteers work diligently to create a win/win situation for both responsible race trainers/owners and sport horse buyers in search of quality prospects. A great deal of our work is in building relationships between the two entities – often all that is spoken regarding this transaction is that the racing industry is bad, you can’t trust trainers, etc. but I assure you that in the many years I have been doing this I warn race trainers about buyers 10xs more often than the reverse. This is a two way street; yes, you are helping the racing industry by buying prospects who are no longer competitive BUT you are also given the rare opportunity to find superior prospects for ridiculously low prices by race trainers – please do not forget that.
I appreciate peoples’ interest in wanting to help a particular horse but do you understand how damaging rumors are to our program and others? I do not even understand how conclusions could have been made regarding this horse being lame, ruined, tortured, destined for slaughter or in need of euthanasia. Honestly, it makes my brain hurt - this horse jogged out soundly for his listing (as described in his ad) – he is impeccably bred, of nice size, great condition, limited starts, GREY and reasonably priced – he is not what I would consider “at risk.” As a sport horse rider, I am embarrassed and disgusted by anyone attacking one of our trainers who is doing the right thing by this horse. I sincerely hope people can see the big picture of how vicious rumors only serve to hurt the horse you claim to help… and future horses!
Also, please do not post this horse has a home until he arrives at your farm. I can vouch for a number of horses who do not find homes because someone on COTH posts that they are going to buy the horse and never do. If you are seriously interested in a horse, I am always happy to help – I want nothing more than for our horses to find good homes, but I will not be part of a witch hunt and I will not stand by while our trainers are disrespected for making good choices.
That said, tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I know I will sit down to dinner being grateful for all the people who have made it possible to transition OTTBs, from both the sport horse and racing communities.
Sincerely,
Sue Smith
