I think it was wishful thinking on the part of John Kyle and KOC - they wanted to think ML wasn’t as far down on the clock as she was. But her score has not changed nor has there been a peep about it that I’ve seen since - so I think it has been resolved. In my mind, it’s really a fine outcome all around - she rode well, there was no blood, and she is not in the mix to win or place high.

The leaderboard makes it plain she was 1.11 over time. I liked her riding today, she looked fitter and more capable than I recall in previous efforts.

Experience and depth really tells at 4 & 5*.

The UK is the base for a substantial number of top riders from many nations. It isn’t unusual to have an everyday BE 100 running with 15 - 20 nationalities competing and there is no difference made between professional and amateur riders or, indeed, children and adults. Top level competition makes top competition riders.

By my observation, American riders frequently fail to make the time across country and one reason might be that they use their hands so much to control speed. I think it inhibits the horses, doesn’t allow them space to react and can upset their balance and rythmn.

Are the Show Jumping ride times up yet? I can’t find them.

Agreed. The Germans have mastered this.

Elisa Wallace just posted her helmet cam. That was a sticky 4* course.

As I thought she lost a couple of studs where I thought he lost a shoe.

Re: the top 3…is this dejavu? Is it 2019?

Any idea how long they typically keep this available?

Forever!

Well… she had wayyyy too much bit in. And she had a martingale on a double bridle. I understand needing to bit up sometimes on the day but I’m sorry that’s a ridiculous combination to have on XC.

I was thinking the same thing. She definitely got a running start. To my knowledge that is not allowed. Sounds like she was a full minute late to her start time too.

FEI rule:

545.1.1Starting Procedure
Athletes at the start of the Cross Country must be under the control of the starter and may not deliberately start until instructed to do so, under penalty of elimination at the discretion of the Ground Jury.

The Horse does not have to stand absolutely immobile, but the Athlete must not get any advantage from a flying start.

I have to say, for at least the past few years (let’s say 4-5), I’ve seen lots of people at FEI trot and canter through the startbox so I thought that rule had been relaxed.

Clayton Fredericks was, and it showed… Horse ran out at the HoTL. Like Karen said, he was riding off his hand and not his leg.

That makes more sense to me (1 minute late starting plus 11 seconds on course) than that she rode the course 1:11 slow.

I am a hunter-jumper person, so perhaps my ignorance is showing, but it seems to me that:

  1. this is a very experienced pair, who
  2. were in the lead after dressage, and
  3. had the advantage of going when the footing was still good, and
  4. did not appear to waste time anywhere.

Given those, losing 1:11 on course was surprising to me. Losing time due to a late start makes much more sense.

(edited to add: I’m not disagreeing with or contesting the time at all - was just curious as to how it was incurred)

If they are going to have replays of what are highlights of rides given they are only three minutes or so long, why do you spend time showing me a horse just galloping along?

I don’t know who directs/produces/edits these but it, as every year, comes off as if it is being done by someone with no video production skills.
