Kudos to Lauren Lambert (watching the 4*-S XC this morning) - she was pretty sure she was eliminated on course. Didn’t beat up her horse, didn’t have an adrenaline-filled refusal to acknowledge it. Instead she calmly walked her horse down the bank and asked for confirmation from course control. That is to be admired as much as any clear XC round.

This quote from OT does not sit well with me…

ā€œHe picked up a bit of a cut, and he’s sore, but at the same time, I’ve hopped on him and gave him a little ride this morning. He’s sound to ride; he’s very fresh,ā€ said Townend. ā€œHe’s well in himself. He jumped very well; unfortunately, he didn’t present well. Obviously, the welfare of horse is paramount in our sport, and that’s their decision to make. It’s very sad for him; it’s very sad for the team, but he’s still in one piece. He’s very happy. He had a little buck on the way back up from the trot up, so it’s more of frustration than anything else. But he’s 100 percent well in himself.ā€

I didn’t actually see his jog but if the horse was indeed noticeably off like someone said on here then its like… stop whining bro! Your horse isn’t sound enough to ride…

I’m an American, but her cool ride through the worst of the slop just earned her another huge fan. She is so talented!

Proud to see four ladies at the top of this very difficult class.

I have a meeting during the 5* but am grateful to be able to catch up on the livestream later.

I don’t interpret this as whining. I think he is just explaining that the horse is not seriously injured and expressing his reasonable frustration. I am sure this is in response to questions.

Sharon White’s horse grabbing her sleeve … I had one that did that, he seemed to think it was funny. My horse didn’t ā€œbiteā€ anyone, he grabbed clothing that was a bit loose and just … so easy to grab. And then enjoy the person’s reaction ā€œhey! stop that!ā€. (I made him stop doing that as a habit, but he tended to try it with other people sometimes.)

A cut and being sore doesn’t make the horse lame to ride, my horse has a cut right now on her stifle and she is sore on it but moving around but working her actually makes the swelling go down and takes the pressure off the wound for a bit.

For sure, like I said I didn’t watch his jog, but if the horse wasn’t unsound today then would they have spun him?

Sharon White certainly had some of the most photogenic moments of the weekend!

I was thinking of the course yesterday and how lucky we are to have Derek deGrazia as a course designer. I thought the course was incredible. Tough, but incredible. No one got seriously hurt - that’s a big, big accomplishment.

I remember watching Rolex(iirc) a few years ago when CMP was designer – the year they had that stupid ā€œshotgun shellā€ fence… and how ugly some of the crashes were. DdG consistently makes courses that reward tactical, accurate riding and I would sooner ride a course of his any day over CMP’s.

More than 10% of starters in the 5* were horse falls. That’s too many. Kyle Carter’s review of XC was interesting from an experienced competitor’s viewpoint.

What was his review?

Thanks!

Philip Dutton said very much the same thing on his Facebook - too many horse falls. I know that new vertical gate got a couple, and the moguls got a couple.

I agree that’s a concerning number but I would be hard pressed to solely blame DdG for most of those falls. Just about every fall I watched yesterday from WFP to Favian was a mile coming.

I honestly don’t understand anyone defending or feeling sorry for OT. He knew the horse was lame. He held it’s head to hide the bob. He also knew that once he got the horse in the show ring it would likely still jump well because the horse is such a trier. That horse absolutely crawled through the HOTL and carried him through some really sticky/scary moments. Not fair to the horse at all to attempt to show jump when he knows it’s sore enough to jog lame. Not good horsemanship.

Par for the course for him, I say. Not surprised at all that he’s whining about it.

Liz & Quicksilver - so perfectly ridden! Oh I want to ride like that!!!

Excited for the future of this pair !!! They are good news for the U.S. !!!

I think in a normal year we wouldn’t have had nearly so many falls, but we’ll never know for sure.

Something else I think is interesting and also correlated with the conditions of the last year are the dressage scores. There were a lot of sub-30 scores, far more than in past years. The riders did their homework in that respect, but I think the lack of competitions last year really showed on xc.

Yeah because Boyd fell twice and that’s his bestie.

Boyd was 2 of those falls but no one cares to comment about that? All the courses fault?

If you fall 2/3 of your rides it tells me you’re not making good choices.

Too much tack, too much backwards handsy riding, slippery tack and unfit riders are the reasons for the falls.
