More Facebook funny: when the hunter rider who has been set down for doping comes to tell people they’re just jealous.
In my opinion: a boycott has more impact if it’s also combined with making the conscious effort to buy products from brands that have publicly denounced this type of abuse or dropped sponsoring riders like ML. And don’t be quiet about it either. Let the company know that you are purchasing their products now because of their stand against abusive bitting practices, especially if you previously hadn’t been a customer. I’ve never purchased a product from enviroequine, but if they decide to drop ML I will make a point to become a customer as they do have products that I could use. I don’t really have cash to burn but if there’s a choice I’m going to vote with my dollar.
:lol::eek: God How pathetic. Such great role models.
Oh, where is the link to this? Can’t wait to see this one!
Um, this Packy person…
Horses live 5 minutes away from suicide.
it’s a picture. Women get muffin tops. Doesn’t mean it’s abuse. That is what stewards police and they were pissed that people assumed abuse.
WTF?
I guess it’s okay to abuse horses because they ‘live 5 minutes away from suicide’?
I recall that this Packy is the sometime COTH columnist who came on here to ask for discussion on one of his opinion pieces - but insisted that respondents had to state their real name and place of residence.
From this, I gathered he was (1) older (not internet savvy), (2) male (entitled), and childless (because parents love it when older guys go online demanding real names and whereabouts from minors!).
No one responded to his post for several days. I felt bad for him because he was so ignorant of etiquette so I alerted the mods to ask them to explain to him that this forum allows screen names and that it was internet-culturally insensitive to demand real identities and locations. I did it this way so as not to embarrass him publicly. This was not long before Jealoushe responded to his post with the sort of answer he deserved.
The OP was then deleted because apparently he did not want to abide by forum rules. Facebook is a much better venue for him.
(Also, no idea who he is and how he relates to eventing. Anyone?)
Packy also happens to be related to ML as I recall. Cousins of some sort  his mother was a trainer. Packy used to ride, not sure he still does.
I don’t know him personally but he is a trainer in area 2–usually at events with a lot of students. I believe also used to be a course designer (he did the old CDCTA at Great Meadows, among others).
Per the bio in this article he did the 87 Pan Am games http://useventing.com/news/what-look-young-event-horse-event-rider-trainer-and-breeder-packy-mcgaughan
Some of the people posting on FB are off the charts, regardless of which side they support. Just nuts.
The only editing I noticed was that it cuts off as the groom starts to move towards the ropes at the end.
I find this really sad. I watched this round on the live feed, couldn’t see any blood on the stream to my TV and noted that this was the best/softest XC riding I’ve ever seen from ML. I hoped this scenario had turned a corner.
Something is very wrong when horses bleed at almost every competition. the flash noseband that was pulled so tight is the culprit along with her hands no matter what is said by her support system. I think the Packy person has a blind spot for Marilyn.
He trains a lot of folks here in MD, both eventers and jumpers. He probably wouldn’t know me at all but he came to my old barn frequently for lessons/training. He seems like quite a good trainer from my observations, so I’m a little flummoxed by how he’s talking about this (but again, since I haven’t ridden with him or observed A LOT, who knows. But the folks who ride with him are all kind people who I respect, who get quite a lot out of their work with him).
He deleted my comment on his FB post. He wasn’t a fan of my comments…
Soo…confused here. I don’t do Eventing so why would I be jealous?
Oh, I know, I am an HP so should be jealous of the rider getting busted and the horse that needed a little too much “prep”. Right, got it. Certainly a lofty goal I never attained.
Can we stop with the towel thing? It’s completely ludicrous and takes away the validity of the rule changes requests. Wiping mouths is not a normal practice for grooms, and it is not a horse welfare issue. Blood in the mouth is, and there is plenty of proof that those are occurring even if she does wipe it away at the finish. Let’s not punish all the other grooms who work for riders whose horses never bleed. I am a freelance groom, and I mostly use black towels because they look nice, are super easy to clean, and are in most riders colors. Sometimes I use turquoise blue towels, but those are only for going to the ring because they look dirty quickly. White towels would be impossible to keep even remotely clean and are not at all practical around horses. I take pride in presenting my horses nicely and looking nice myself. I do not want a dirty white towel sticking out of my pocket, and the color of my towel does not at all effect horse welfare.
Let’s just stick to elimination when blood is found in the mouth and more strict checks on flash nosebands. Lots of people would get on board with that, and it would solve the problems. I highly suspect her issues are with using a leverage bit with a tight flash. The horse can’t get away from that leverage and fusses in the mouth. Funny that there was a thread here on COTH praising the use of two reins on a pelham and the rider was using a flash noseband with it…
If it turned out that he had a huge blind spot for someone he knew and liked on a personal level, he would hardly be the first person to have that kind of blind spot.
That flash was not cranked tight with a winch.
It does if the color of the towel hides the fact that the horse is bleeding.
Family, they are family.
It didn’t hide blood. The horse’s mouth was bleeding even before. The stewards were aware because ML pointed it out to them. It is then clearly seen bleeding on course. But everyone already knew it was bleeding.
the issue is why is a horse with a cut and bloody mouth showing that day? Let’s just say no bloody mouths. It doesn’t matter how it happens, it is a real rarity, so saying you know, you cant run with a cut and bleeding mouth and if your horse starts bleeding at the mouth on course, you’re done for the day shouldnt be a big deal. I keep saying this, because I don’t grasp how this idea is so extreme.
But it doesn’t. The blood is very well documented and always has been. Be realistic - the color of towels someone uses will NEVER become a rule, and it is utterly ridiculous to have a rule regarding that. Even bringing towel color into it detracts from the valid concern of blood in the mouth and changing the rule for that. Focus on the actual issue.
