Marilyn Little's horse bleeds yet again. Red rag to a groom.

Made a few comments on EnviroEquine and Pet since they are a sponsor of ML and they have the finger on the delete button today. All comments quickly removed! Imagine a horse company touting animal welfare with her as one of their sponsored rider!

That was an interesting read. There was also an interesting photo of the mare sans bridle, in her stall - looks like she has some rubs on her nose and in the corner of her mouth. But I couldn’t tell on my phone whether it looked like old injury or something like spring clover ick.

I admit to being a keyboard warrior and I will never ride at that level (nor would I want to), but with the repeated incidents I just can’t get myself on board with her… I know I am a know nothing, but if I had a horse get a bloody mouth more than once while riding (not even while showing, while RIDING), I’d be mortified and trying to figure out why and how to fix it. But I don’t have a lot riding on whether or not I finish a certain competition, either. I honestly think the reaction to her would be very different if her tone in response to the incidents was different - she tends to write it off and CYA.

I will say the mare is spectacularly talented and beautiful… I do wonder what a different rider would do to address the ā€œcontrolā€ on XC and if we’d see different equipment…

There is no mystery as to why it happens. These are from the first two videos that popped up on a quick search. Every XC video I’ve seen of her has this move of setting one hand and yanking with the other. I’m sure there are dozens of more of examples on youtube. Keep in mind what kind of biting she uses. This would be bad enough with a loose ring, but no, she historically uses some of the most sever biting seen on XC:

I don’t even think the horses have control issues, I think its more the way she guns them as fast as can be and then hauls them up right before the fence. Cringe worthy.

which is why I put it in quotes.

Can you imagine this horse in the hands of a Jung?

ML is not the problem, just a symptom. Don’t get too sidetracked by the boil on the butt and not treat the cause.

I’d go after consistent rules enforcement and at least the impression of horse welfare. Going after an individual just allows dismissal of the complaint because it’s personal. Go after the officiating from top down. Maybe the remainder of the old school Eventing kick on regardless that’s still dismissive of any contrary opinions about Horse welfare from the little people needs to shut up. There has been much progress away from that use them up to win attitude in the last 25 years or so but not everybody is on board.

And, no, I don’t care for her or her methods , never have since long before she ever stepped into the start box on a course. Never thought she was wildly popular in SJ, ,least not where I was showing.

Just wonder whose fingers fit under that cavesson or if there is an official with the guts enough to try in public. We could do better representing the sport on the International stage. Do we want one that might not score as well under increased scrutiny?

Yup. I doubt anyone will even read letters from Smurfs like us, though. I wish one of the bigger names would get behind this and speak out, but I realize that’s probably career suicide.

I have more thoughts on this, but will have to come back and add them when I’m not wrangling a toddler and typing from my phone.

Ok just called usea they sent me to usef. Explained the issue. They gave me the following email: integrity@usef.org. this is just infuriating. How many times will,it take. 6? 20? 100? And yes it seems everyone else manages to get it done with rarely or ever an issue like this. But this rider seems to often and always have this issue. And she uses the harshest bits on most of her horses. I am just so sad and angry about this. This is not who we are!

I agree…and that is what I tried to emphazie on my letters - its not about ML, I mean it is but it ismore about the lack of consequences for repeated bloody mouths.

It is bad for the horses
It is bad for eventing
It is bad for drawing spectators

I am not one to get political or post things other than vacation pics or photos of my dog… but like most of you, I am just floored that Marilyn Little, aka Bloody Mary, gets away with this over and over again and that our governing bodies (US Equestrian) do absolutely nothing. I am truly disgusted and she is NOT my national champion. Since no one will do anything, it’s left up to us. The only thing we have power over is boycotting all her sponsors. So, if you, like me, are sick of seeing the photos below with a bloody mouthed horse or a flash beyond tight or some sort of medieval contraption in the horse’s mouth on cross country, then boycott the following companies – STOP buying from them until they drop their sponsorship of the animal abuser who holds our national title. Here is a list, and feel free to contact them to share your feelings on her. Please share this with anyone who buys equine products. And to the handful of sympathizers, SAVE IT, if I hadn’t lost track of how many times this has happened b/c of the frequency, you might have a leg to stand on.

Who has jurisdiction, USEA of the FEI?

Am I missing something?

I don’t see any rules for tack.

Seen the white areas on the nose on alot of horses, but they never bled, never knew what they were but they were permanent.

Seen the white ares on the upper, inner corners of the mouth before too. Did know what they were from. It wasn’t clover or banging the upper, inner corner of the mouth on a fence or the ground.

I do know a horse I was riding started developing a worn area in the corner like that - I changed the bit and adjusted it differently, and it never developed further. I’m trying to be charitable as a ā€œinternet stalkerā€ who is not on the ground and doesn’t know what’s going on behind the scenes… (not trying very hard, LOL, but trying)

It looks like vitiligo to me on her nose and lips. They don’t really know what causes it, sometimes can be a nutritional thing like low copper, but it’s an autoimmune condition that can’t be ā€œcured.ā€ The spots can come and go. It isn’t painful but it may cause the skin to be more sensitive I don’t know. Never had one with it that close to bit area. It is thought to be hereditary.

All sorts of different animals can get it including people, dogs, etc.

It is interesting because a friend had her horse cut his lips bad from her bit, like a deep cut in the corners of his mouth and they never ever bled even with those cuts.

She obviously changed his bit, bit guards and Vaseline. I’m a bit surprised ML doesn’t use Vaseline if this was actually an issue with biting the tongue and lips, it can help.
