He heard to noises that he later determined were shots but at the time he heard a fight and then two thumping noises.
Regarding the civil suit …
If it ever goes to trial, I wonder what physical appearance Barisone will project?
As Judge Taylor noted, there was quite a transformation from criminal trial to custody hearing. Barisone went from disturbed and disheveled to confident and groomed. Taylor questioned if the first was an act to influence the jury.
Certainly, the two seem so different, many would question: which is the “real” Barisone, pretending to be insane or pretending to be sane?
So at the civil trial, who will appear? Maybe a third persona.
And Taylor should never have commented on MB’s appearance.
MB did not have access to a barber while in jail. You know COVID and all. I am guessing he had access when moved to Ann Klein.
Stupid remark by Taylor and very prejudicial in my opinion.
Great points @Maria!!!
Well said.
I think the other difference is one person was in the middle of the fight for their life against someone trying to lie to Finish The Bastard. The other was someone who had a light at the end of the tunnel.
I find it hard to believe this is a thing. During one faze the man was facing the prospect of the rest of his life behind bars. During the other faze he had been found NOT GUILTY and knew that he would eventually be free to be with his horses and loved ones again.
I’m willing to bet that anyone’s appearance would be different given the differences in gravity of the situation.
I’m also willing that the next MB, freed, after riding and resting and rediscovering his peace will be a third version.
Buckle up!
- The trial was over and he was found NG and NGRI. I bet he was HUGELY relieved and his countenance (48 Hours) and appearance reflected it
- In jail you don’t have access to a barber. Haircuts are given by other inmates. If no hair cuts are permitted to be given for (reasons), then of course appearances will look different between appearances. Taylor knew this so his remarks were particularly egregious.
- That Barisone had gotten a haircut while at AK also speaks to the level of trust he had earned from the staff. Someone either handed him scissors and possibly a razor too so he could groom himself, or did it for him.
Again, Taylor knows this.
No. Just no.
Original trial he had been in jail for well over a year.
Next visit to court he had been receiving actual treatment in a place he could see the sun.
All of these things can be true:
MB was held in a county jail where he did not have access to OUTSIDE, even in a secured jail yard, for three years, .
No barbers in said county jail.
County jail food.
Visits behind glass or restricted to video chats.
On trial for attempted murder.
Had to face the people that plotted to Finish Him.
Perhaps those things just affected his appearance at trial.
THEN:
He’s acquitted. HUGE RELIEF.
He’s moved to a place where he can go outside.
He’s somewhere that may just have different amenities re: food and hygiene.
He gets to have in person visits with people.
He’s talking to a psychiatrist again.
Perhaps his appearance reflected that.
To extrapolate further to the civil trial:
Maybe by then, he will have completed his treatment and earned release. And can go shopping and buy clothes that fit him and, well, he’s released. Imagine the improvement that will make on his appearance?
Two and a half years awaiting trial. Two and a half years! That’s just unreal.
Apparently portions of this post need to make a reappearance.
Barisone has suffered from depression for a long time. It can settle in like a cold, greasy fog on a moonless night and you can’t see the stars. It can whisper in your ear and take the seeds of your worst fears and make them bloom.
Those two (possibly three or more) live to pull the wings off of butterflies. Michael wasn’t immune.
LK knew enough to know how to target his fears. Fortunately, he didn’t kill himself to escape the people who were tormenting him. That is what some people do instead - particularly if they are disappointing those closest to them.
It’s funny you should say that, because I was just thinking that the whole idea would seem so outlandish that it would belong in the Dick Francis novel. And yet it sounds perfectly within the bounds of reason to multiple people who have been following the case.
That was an excellent Dick Francis book, as I recall. I read all those books, although it was a long time ago by now. I definitely preferred the ones that were more closely related to horses, rather than some of the later ones where he went off on tangents on art or wine or what have you.
I think the thing that made the character suspicious in the book was that the person feeding the sugar cubes did not really look that comfortable doing it, as if he did not really like being that close to a horse. And if you did not really like the horses in the first place, why would you bother feeding them sugar cubes?
I can’t believe I just remembered that. Lol.
And speaking of tangents and sugar cubes and polio vaccinations. I think I remember reading that the wife of Dick Francis had polio. And then in one of his books, the protagonist’s wife had polio as well. I may have to double check that to see if I remembered that correctly.
If you go look at the GFM sight, there is an older post explaining what MB had access to (or not) in the way of personal hygiene while in jail.
If the judge decides that LK will do her deposition in person and in Attorney Dininger’s office, is there any way her daddy could wheedle his way to be in there, too?
How did they end up using bakery products in the horse feed?!? That doesn’t sound like a normal ingredient.
It was decades ago that someone told me never to give a horse anything with poppy seeds on it. Long before that Seinfeld episode covered that same ground. Lol.
No.
It wasn’t a good look either for an attorney to come to the court to testify dressed like he was ready for a round of golf IMO. Dispectful.
It sounds as though there are those who don’t want to see another person’s mental and physical health to improve and their appearance reflect it. Is there some benefit to be gained when another person declines significantly? A feeling of validation or deep satisfaction? Life insurance policy?
Absolutely a great breakdown.
The judge was extremely unprofessional to make any remarks regarding his appearance and demeanor. He may well think that…to himself. Anyone working in the public eye should know this. From a cashier at McDonald’s to those employed by a court system. Especially someone in such a position of power.
If I had said what I really thought at work, I doubt I would have remained employed for my 37 years
*edit to add a word
If I remember correctly, the person feeding the sugar cubes was extremely allergic to horses too. The main character ended up finding a good old friendly horse and locking him up in a room with the guy to get him to confess.
That’s why my mind went there re: the sugar cubes…I’ve read all of his books numerous times!
I’m watching Seinfeld right now!
