Hi Liz, I’m glad to see that you love horses.
I’d hate to assume anything - Were you giving us a run down on your credentials in your post? Is it possible that you could outline for us what can be done for Monica Thors legally by a family member to get her the treatment that she needs?

As a mental health counselor, I’m going to advocate that we not guess at a mental health diagnosis. It can be shameful to many to have a diagnosis and very hurtful to the recipient if she does not have one. Until she sits in our office and we have a DSM 5, a Master’s degree in counseling/social work/psychology, and a number of ways to assess, let’s not throw diagnoses out there.
While I agree that an internet diagnosis from afar is foolish, saying there has to be something wrong with her head is sort of giving her the benefit of the doubt. If there isn’t anything wrong with her thinking she is unbelievably cruel.

…very hurtful to the recipient if she does not have one
True Liz - We can not diagnose her mental health situation as we are not professionals - and we are “afar”.
As for “being hurtful” I certainly HOPE that this person is suffering from a serve mental illness, because if not, like Laurie has pointed out - well then, she would just simply be an evil, cruel, torturer of animals. A truly HORRID person.
So, she either has something “not quite right” about her mental health, which might be “hurtful” to say - but a little less sting then - she is of sound mind, and just evil and wretched person.
I was asked by someone to come to this thread and give some legal advice, but quite frankly, I cannot read about tortured horses. But I have had a lot of experiences with animal control, some good, a lot bad, and of course I’ve worked with law enforcement officers in the city and in the sticks.
First off, it does not take a year or more to prepare any case. All my murders, including death penalties, were tried within a year, and all while I was trying other felonies. However, for people who don’t want to try cases, delay is the way they deal with it. If you keep delaying cases, eventually people “forget” or go away or something else happens somewhere else to divert attention. (Heck I inherited a 3 yr old murder case over in Tattnall County on a friday, because the DA was afraid to try it, and started the case the next tuesday and got a guilty verdict on saturday. Only reason that case was tried was because the sheriff was up for election and the victim’s family swore to have him defeated if he did not get the judge to try the case. All horse people by the way. A great case for a prosecutor, but prosecutors are afraid to try a lot of cases like murder and rape and child molestation. )
And you must understand that most law enforcement people, prosecutors and cops alike, don’t even give a damn about animals being abused. Only way to get action is to get the TV cameras involved. And get everyone organized. Most animal control officers are bureaucrats who get mad when you want them to work. Yes, money to care for the horses is a factor, but really, most of AC people just don’t like to work. (In Atlanta, the head of animal control wanted to kill the 20 cats (I mistakenly said 22 cats on the other thread, but it was 20 cats, some pregnant) belonging to an old black Vietnam Vet. So someone got it on TV, I saw it, went to my boss cause I knew I’d not be welcome at AC, and then went over and badged my way in, after getting my vets at Briarcliff to agree to spay and alter the whole 20 cats. All cats were in great shape, btw. The head of AC called my boss, wanting me fired, LOL.
So you have to mobilize the TV stations, get on TV if you live near Thors, and work the system. I was lucky to have friends in TV in Atlanta, so my vets at Briarcliff Hospital got a lot of publicity for doing a lot of good free things for animals in need. Work the TV stations. Trying to get a cop or AC or prosecutor to take up for animals is usually a failure, unless the reporters are all over them and Thors in this case.
Mental illness is something that people use as a defense to crime. If this woman is crazy in the legal sense, then she’ll go to a mental facility. If she’s “guilty but mentally ill” she’ll go to prison but get mental treatment. Or she could just be a sadist who needs to go to prison. Lots of killers of humans try the old “I’m crazy” trick when they are just trying to escape punishment. We had the best forensic shrink in Atlanta, and he called it as he saw it, testifying for me sometimes, and against me sometimes. If this woman knows what she is doing, she’s sane in legalese. Not all mental illnesses qualify someone to not go to prison. Besides, most animal abusers do not get sent to prison, unfortunately.
So sad to hear the reality C&C but appreciate you sharing your experience. It does sound like there is some action forthcoming thankfully.
Hey Laurie, that link just posted is encouraging! Let’s hope that the statement “We have been assured that there will be action and a resolution to this shortly.” means within days, and not the normal bureaucratic pace.
I called both the Dept of Ag’s animal welfare office and Christie’s office this morning, and they both sounded like they’ve been beseiged with calls.

I do have my Master’s in a human services field, but I wasn’t trying to be a know-it-all. The DSM 5 is the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual (5th edition), which anyone can buy if you’d like to shell out the $100 for it.
Sorry, I can’t answer your second question. As far as I can tell, that’s more of a law question than a mental health question. Someone who has serious physical or mental issues can have their rights taken and given to a guardian, or they become a ward of the state. How that happens, I am not sure.
Caffeinated - I see your point. To say there’s something else going on tempers the anger somehow, gives us a reason why, and makes us feel better because there is a reason. Stomaching that unbelievable cruelty without a reason can be almost more than we can bear.
How could people sit on their hands and do nothing for these poor horses for so many years. It is truly disgusting. SOMEONE should have stopped her!!

“All that is necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.”
My god. I just looked at her Facebook page. What a monster. An absolute monster. Grinning like an idiot while rasping blood-soaked hooves. Smiling a great big smile while a very sad horse stands behind her with its blood all over the floor. Sad, soaking wet, depressed cats with no whiskers, even posting a photo saying “some cats need muzzle” as she takes clippers to its face. At least I hope they’re clippers and not something even worse. And other hands are in the photos, so people actually stand there and help here restrain these poor animals.
I don’t give a shit as to why she does it, or if she has a mental illness. She’s a monster and has to be stopped. NOW. Add me to the list of people who will be on the phone every single day. Who is best to call? The Governor’s office? Her rep? Who do we need to keep calling?

I still say we need to send her back to Sweden & let them take care of her on their dime.
Wonder if the State would just sit on their hands while Hannibal Lecter boils people’s HEADS on FB, too!
They need to seize all the animals YESTERDAY.

Gov Christie – (609)-292-6000 just a generic office number-- I don’t have any illusion that the woman I talked to can actually do anything. Just hoping they logged my call, so there’s a record of citizen interest. I also sent an email to his office via http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/
Thanks, HH. I will call every single day until those animals are out of her hands. I will be polite but adamant.
Writing the email now; I can send that tonight.
NJ to “soon” file charges:
December 1, 3:02pm TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals plans to soon file charges in the case of a farm that has been publicly accused of hurting animals.
SPCA spokesman Matt Stanton says the agency has been investigating the Swedesboro farm of Monica Thors since last year. Critics say she shaved down horses’ hooves so much they became infected.
Stanton says it has taken time to file charges because they have to go through his agency as well as the state Department of Agriculture, which doesn’t have the power to file abuse charges. He also says officials need to decide what to do with the farm’s horses if charges are filed.
Thors said Monday that she cannot comment on the case.

Sounds like the power of public opinion may have forced some action.

The fact that these things have been ongoing and visible on her facebook page is probably what makes me sickest.
If the Standardbred Association can get it done with the connections, But yeah, I would be calling the Governors office. any local TV station,
The squeaky wheel gets the grease~
