More barn drama! (you know you love it) FINAL UPDATE page 13

I would appreciate if folks would read all my posts before reiterating a point I’ve already responded to. I would also appreciate if people would read for comprehension and try to understand what I am actually suggesting rather than strawmanning and attributing statements to me that I’m not making (i.e. I never said this situation was the same as a stray dog nor did I give that as an analogy, I gave that as an example of something I’ve done to help an animal sans any obligation. Nor did I ever suggest the OP should keep this horse, simply that it wouldn’t hurt and might help to spread the word about her and the OP is in a position to do so given that she knows when/where the horse will go to auction and can give some history of the horse).

OP, can you email me the horse’s details please? I will happily network for her, if you send me her info.

And can we get some clarification… is she actually lame or just a delicate horse who at times has issues?

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me how it could possibly be detrimental to anyone to spend 10 minutes forwarding an email. I think I’ll be waiting for a while for that answer.

And yes, of the 3 horses I networked and found a home for sigh unseen-- 2 of the 3 had lameness issues. And they found good homes with people who were willing to take them on knowing their issues. What is too lame for a hunter horse might be perfectly fine with time/stall rest as a trail horse or for piddle around dressage stuff. We don’t even KNOW what the issues are with this horse and so many people on this thread are sure she’s a canner. Maybe she needs something as simple as injections which the absentee owner has skipped.

Replied, thanks

It won’t hurt. You reposting the same point insistently over and over, however, sure comes off as the guilt trip despite how many times you say it’s no obligation. The reading comprehension is there, but your insistence at repeating how you just couldn’t possibly live with yourself sends a different message.

OP – I hope all this comes to an end in the coming days, and you’ve more than earned your good karma points. It’s horror situations like yours that serve as an example to many of us. Every time I consider what companion set up I should get for my two horses, and someone suggests retirement board like it’s going to be all kittens and glitter (and it could be), I think of this type of thing and think NO FREAKING WAY.

You’ll come out the other side knowing how generous you are, wiser in many aspects and with better boundary drawing abilities, right? (silver lining in there somewhere…)

Everyone please keep your fingers crossed for me. She just sent me a text saying the mare will be moved tonight.

I think that most likely all of this discussion is a moot point.

I see vxf’s point, that none of this is the horse’s fault and no one wants to see the horse come to a bad end. However, the BO does not have the option of simply taking the horse unless the owner were to sign it over, and it really isn’t reasonable to expect any BO to do that. I sure wouldn’t.

Legally, the horse has to be auctioned with the resulting monies going towards the the outstanding bill. There are some options–you don’t necessarily have to take the horse to a public auction where there might be meat buyers, you can auction a horse “publicly” on your own. If the horse has some value, this is a reasonable route to go. You could publicize the details and expect to have some reasonable parties show up looking for a bargain. I’ve bought horses at auctions like this. With a horse with $0 value other than meat, this would not work unless the OP bought the horse back and euthanized it. But that’s a big deal too–first of all there’s a vet bill for the farm visit/euthanasia and then there is the headache and expense of disposal.

Personally, I’d be very reluctant to network around looking for buyers/takers for a horse such as the OP describes. I wouldn’t want to foist a lame and ill-tempered horse on any one of my friends or acquaintances! I’d feel uncomfortable even asking. And if someone did take the horse and ended up getting kicked changing her blankets, etc. I’d feel even worse. There are a lot of horses in need out there and I save the phone calls for horses that are sound or useful in some way. Honestly, if someone started a phone tree or contact tree to try to save this horse I would not participate. If I were to waste my contacts time bothering them about a horse like this, they won’t want to hear about the next horse in need who might actually be a diamond in the rough.

Personally I can’t criticize the OP because I sure am not willing to step up and take the horse, and she’s already done way more than I would have.

Sorry you had to endure this. Been there too (the “no good deed goes unpunished” during the short time I opened my private farm to boarding) and why I stopped boarding.

So troubling to have a big heart and good brain and still get screwed. I hope that the mare winds lands in good hands and your troubles will be over now.

Finger’s crossed that the mare is moved tonight.

Toes, eyes, arms, legs, hand, feet, crossed (pretzel mode) that she pays you what you are owed first.

I hope you’re planning on supervising the move. Or you and a big guy. Just to make sure nothing disappears or is damaged. I’m happy for you that this bad situation is almost over.

SHE’S GONE!!
Showed up with someone and a trailer, and off they went. I wish her the best. So glad this is over, I can’t even TELL you!

Her parting comment? “So remember that pink belt I let you borrow? Can I have it back?” Me: “Um…sure, hon, here’s your belt.”

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all of you for your support, advice, and just for reading and understanding. This wasn’t the kind of thing non-horsey people can relate to. Ya’ll rock.

Whew…

Yay! I hope you are sitting in your barn drinking champagne right now!

Yay! So glad she’s gone and now you have your wonderful farm to yourself beginning right now for the entire weekend!

Glad the issue is resolved. Good news indeed.

I will add one little caveat: keep your stuff (your gate & your tack room & whatever else you locked) under lock & key for a bit yet. I had an experience, and know others who have, with a certain person who is now thankfully deceased, who would leave a place and then come back after she was moved out and take stuff that wasn’t hers.

Good news! And I agree with Ann FS about keeping a close eye on everything. Remember how awful this was, because I bet she comes crying back when she runs out of other options.

I’m delighted that the mare is gone but I think you should have sold the pink belt back to her… for back board.
