My horrible experiences with Texas horse trainer/instructor Ellen Doughty-Hume

was the one that mentioned the dog peeing so I had to go look at to confirm. Yes, the dog in the picture is Jesse.

Thank you for confirming, Vani. I could not remember who posted that originally, and this is a lot of thread to search through.

You missed the point of my comment. And if you read the last line, it referred to all of the riders who made the list. If you make the list, you and/or your horse missed but you stuck the landing. My only point was that neither makes you a great or terrible rider. It only means you missed and stuck the landing. I didn’t want the person who referred to think that somehow qualfied anyone as good or bad based on that.

There was no snarky intent in the comment.[/QUOTE]

I disagree. Kim’s save was an example of extraordinary balance and athleticism. Her ability to let go completely and stay out of the way while her horse came up with the best solution possible is what all event riders should aspire to.

I understand being a bit nonplussed about riders clawing their way into the saddle or pulling like crazy to fix something, but the photo series of Kim Severson should be on every rider’s bulletin board.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that where there is smoke there is fire. The first time I saw EDH ride dressage I knew a hack when I saw one. I also knew I had to tread carefully because not everyone is as quick to see the writing on the wall and believe me they all not only saw the writing they suffered immensely as did their horses. Without going into detail I suffered horrible injuries while associated with EDH. I also learned a certain amount of boldness and courage which are her strong points. She has so much to learn about true horsemanship and the art of riding. She has no regard for anyone or anything that will not get her to where she wants to be. Winning is everything to her. So beware all and protect yourselves and your animals because if you don’t no one else will.

I have no dog in this fight, not even riding anymore, but started reading the first several pages of this thread, then did a search for EDH. Link provided.
Seems she is well loved by all the people who posted their “testimonials” on that site. How does a pro have two complete sides to them, I believe those people that posted on here, And I have seen here ride, but it just amazes me, that is all.

People tend to love their trainers…until something happens and they don’t. That might explain how she has great testimonials and horror stories out there at the same time.

Mango20, over the years I have never ceased to be amazed at the things people allow, even encourage, trainers to do to their horses. So I agree with you about why there could be great testimonials interspersed with the horror stories.

In response to this thread, she recently put out a request for testimonials. The majority, as in all but 1 that I can think of, are from clients that are either children and/or been clients of hers for less than a year. Some as little as 3-6 months. Not to discredit their opinions, but a common theme with EDH is that it starts out rosy and she is revered for her riding ability and skills bc she is an UL rider. Typically, it takes some time for the true colors to show themselves. Notice here that the negative comments all come from people that rode and/or boarded with her over a length of time, and therefore have a more accurate picture.

Those testimonials only appeared on her site after this thread blew up. 80% of them are from CHILDREN and her friends who have never actually had a horse in her care (as in live in different states) the rest (except 1) are all new clients that have had their children in lessons for a few months and truly don’t know any better. It is pure desperation in an attempt to salvage her business.

Ahhh that explains it, I had a feeling they were from new clients with not much horse experience.
It is really a shame this goes on all too often in all areas of horse sports.

It’s a sad, sad day when an adult exploits the testimony of a child for their benefit…or in this case, their business. It’s in poor taste and reeks of desperation.

Several testimonials are from current working students.

I also find it interesting that in her bio, there is no mention of important coaches or mentors from her past who have helped her get to this point. Cue bio update…

Just discovered the reply with quote function is not working either.
Groom&Taxi, interesting, I was going to ask who she rode under coming up.

Sannois and Groom&Taxi,

Since she moved to Area V, she didn’t ride with anyone consistently (or even much sporadically as far as I’m aware) until somewhat recently. I think it’s within the past year she started taking regular lessons with Carsten Meyer. I’m not sure exactly what Carsten’s credentials are, other than he is the show jumping course designer at Texas Rose Horse Park.

I’m not an EDH fan by any means, but I just read the testimonials, and a ton of them are from parents. I only saw one or two that were from kids themselves.

Anna, Blake, Madeline and Janelle are all under 16yrs old. 3 others are working students (young but not sure of exact age) and 4 are personal friends who have never boarded with her since they live in different states. The rest are legit clients (aka parents)

Dead horses don’t lie. If what people say is true about the trainer, and she has caused or allowed by ignoring problems, the deaths of horses, she’s not nice.

Don’t we all know trainers in various disciplines who continue to get clients and testimonials despite having no business being in the horse industry? I thought that was kind of a COTH staple!

Right click and open the “Reply with quote” in a new link or tab. (Or Ctrl-Click, Cmd-Click if you’re on a Mac.) Annoying, but it’s the only way around it right now. :sigh:

the day this thread started I had seen testimonials on her site, so at least some were there prior.
