My horrible experiences with Texas horse trainer/instructor Ellen Doughty-Hume

The most recent posts do not paint a picture of someone who should be working with humans or animals, if those allegations are true

What a scary human being this is — total disgrace to our sport!

If her transgressions continue to be ignored after the revelations of this latest post, USEA should be incredibly embarrassed and should take a good, long look in the mirror and think about the dangerous precedent they are setting for the rest of the horse community. It’s plain and simple: This woman needs to be stopped.

:eek::eek:

USEA - you endorse this person as a trainer on your website.

Pony Club - you allow this woman to wear your pin when she competes.

Is this really the advertisment you want for your brand? Is this someone you want associated with your mission statement? It’s time to wake up.

Definitely not somebody I’m going to be giving my business to any time soon. And the part about the horse that was allowed to suffer until it died due to a training accident is horrifying.

That said … colic does not equal strangles (although they could potentially coincide). I’m not quite sure what was going on with the chestnut colt, but if he was really believed to have strangles the whole facility, not just that horse, needs to be under quarantine. And it’s not ok that he had no water … but I have seen plenty of horses trash their stall to that degree in less than 24 hours.

Absofreakinglutely spot on.

Please somebody do something! Have the courage to save the remaing horses who cannot save themselves. The sport is only here because of our horses we have a duty to protect them.

FYI I screen capped all of XYZ’s post in case it vanishes.

Wow. I wanted to commend everyone who called this woman out, that takes balls and it’s very important for people to hear these stories.

Y’all could send this information to the FEI which does entertain complaints about FEI members who abuse horses outside of competition. The photo of the dead horse on the backside of her farm would certainly get their attention.

It would probably be best if an FEI member started the complaint process, but anyone who is currently riding in 1*s is still an FEI member.

Yes it does take balls and so many stories yet to be told! Why?! Let’s get her out!

It is absolutely shocking to me that the USEA endorses and drives business to Ellen with a Level 3 Certification in their Instructors’ Certification Program. That is how I found Ellen. I assumed that a trainer with her accomplishments and endorsements would be an excellent person to learn from. I did my research, and everything I could find about her on the internet was positive. I never witnessed anything as crazy as many of the stories that have surfaced on this thread, but I did see and experience a few things that caused concern. I only took lessons out there for a short time before moving on due to a variety of reasons.

Right now I’m sitting here at my desk, pretty much slack-jawed and in shock at xyz’s post and pictures. I’m shocked I rode at a place where these awful things can happen. I’m shocked that Ellen is still in business as an equestrian professional. I’ve been involved with horses long enough to know that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in the horse world, especially when business and competition is involved. But this… this is just unacceptable.

More than anything, I’m so sad for the animals.

For those who missed it, the story of Real Beauxdean (with pictures) is what was posted by an alter several days ago, then promptly disappeared. Details were the same.

Thank you for explaining that. I know I wondered what had been posted.

100% right ^^

Animal users and abusers are everywhere. I’ve seen conditions like those in the posted pix at quite a few barns. Excessively dirty stalls, thin horses, etc. But for the Pony Club to endorse her? Wow.

These stories are horrifying. Perhaps @Rate My Horse PRO™ can get involved.

If you want to see USEA etc take action, you need to write to them directly. It still may not work but at least you will know they saw it. Odds are good that they haven’t seen this thread.

Photobucket link shows a photo of a bay colt. Story references young OTTB, and presumably he was a resale project.

Pedigree link: http://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pedigree.cfm?page_state=ORDER_AND_CONFIRM&reference_number=9462688

At least this part of the story seems to be corroborated (bay 2013 gelding per Equineline). He never raced, but goes back to AP Indy, with The Axe on the dam side. A heartbreaking end - RIP.

This story is frightening, and also kind of a wake up call. Accusations aren’t facts. Pictures are certainly facts but in my work, I have to take photos of things and they are very carefully set so that they clearly have a date stamp, my GPS has a locator, so I can prove where and when I take the photos for investigative purposes. I also need to make a written log of what I do as well. It is all well and good to say things on the COTH board but when it comes to actual enforcement, or to go as far as develop an investigation, a different set of criteria is required for action. I guess what I am trying to say is we can read stories and be horrified but a law enforcement or rules enforcement body (such as USEA or USEF) will need a lot more to act.
This is not to disbelieve the stories or testimony given, nor to defend anyone’s actions. It’s just the way it is and has to be. Accusations are just that until proven. No one so far has said that authorities have been involved. If they have been, great, I just missed it.
