Has this been posted on the website that’s outs bad trainers…(ratemypro, or something like that?). If that trainer did what was said, it needs to be.
@Sooar such an interesting post for a newbie to COTH. You’re either here to drag politics into this thread (maybe in hopes of getting it shut down, I bet), just want to post conspiracy theories, or take the focus away from what this thread was started for- how EDH treats her horses/clients. I’d put my money on it being a combination of one and three.

May I ask a genuine question? How are her riding skills in general? I know this is a super loaded question and I know about her pattern for questionable decision making and horse care. But in the saddle, how is she? Just curious if there are safety concerns of her out on XC, like fast/unsafe riding.

There was video of Stormy on tv the other day, jumping one of her horses on course, and she looked very competent. Also a picture of her leading her daughter on the daughter’s palomino pony.

I don’t think she’s a bad rider (at least in public). It’s more what she does at home and her behavior at events. The trail of broken horses in her wake is ridiculous though, and imo, Sir Oberon must either be made of steel, held together by duct tape, or be the one horse she actually takes proper care of because he’s her only ticket to the big show.
There is another well-known COTHer who could tell of her recent experience with EDH and the broken horse that she was finally able to get back from her, but it’s her tale to tell if she so chooses. I can completely understand why she may not wish to though.

Yeah, I was curious about that but for a different reason. I was wondering if she’s some kind of AMAZING rider such that it might overcome some of her alleged bad horsemanship.
I can think of a H/J trainer/pro who really is no horseman (nothing even close to what’s been alleged here but not ideal, by any stretch) however she can get SUCH A GOOD RIDE out of anything she sits on. I really have to admit it. She has more talent in her pinky finger than all but the very best. I suspect that’s why a lot of people stick with her. I suppose if you keep a close eye on the horse’s care and don’t trust her too much, and you want to win, maybe it’s worth it to be with someone like that. I wouldn’t… but I don’t care about winning that much.

I can think of LOTS of pros like this. Being successful at shows and being a good horseman are not one and the same.
Don’t get me wrong, there are pros out there who are also exceptional horsemen/women. There are also pros who are smart enough to realize where their horsemanship is lacking and hire capable managers and grooms to help with the deficit. Then there are those who should really be run out of the business for the sake of the horses, yet maintain a presence because they can ride the pants off of anything.

:sigh: Ugh. At least Hollywood is beginning - FINALLY - to take known abusers to task and negatively impact their careers. It’s too bad that the horse world (and politics) doesn’t follow suit.
I think she is going to have WAY more people than usual watching her in KY this year, and not as “fans.”
Sir Oberon is a lovely horse, so willing and game OF; but did he look a little “stringhalty” in his dressage test trot work, or am I imagining things?

She appears to be a strong aggressive rider. But it is what happens between on courses that makes or breaks a horse.
This one, SirO, seems to be an awful nice guy. Hope he has an "on top of it " owner.

Ellen is a very capable rider. When she was first breaking into the upper-upper-levels with Sir Oberon, they notched some very good results at some notable courses, against some of the best riders in the country. At the time she could have been on track to become on of this country’s leading riders, if that is what she wanted to do.
She hasn’t had another horse take her as far as Obie has done. Possibly she followed the path of many pros and sold the really good ones? And, as we see in this thread, there have been some issues at the home stables.
Some pros prefer the consistent business of staying closer to home, against the expense and stress of campaigning across the country against a very competitive base of ULR’s. I have no idea if that is the case with Ellen, though, don’t know her personally.
