New farm, let's build some stuff

Is that your garden over the fence?

No, this is the back southeast corner of the property. Far away from everyone, also a far way to hoof poop but I don’t want to look at it or smell it either so I’ll get it out there. I can make an emergency pile right behind the dry lot if I really really can’t get back there.

Are there no requirements for distance from the property line for manure storage where you live?
Lucky you if there are not.

Your bins do look amazing.

I assume you are on city water rather than having a well because I didn’t see any water concern. I’m well, and being without water for the horses for the first time had me buying a backup generator. Being a bit on the OCD side, I now have a whole house and barn natural gas unit, plus a gasoline fired portable backup for the backup. And if the well itself fails, I also have an 80 gallon storage tank that is kept filled.

Not that I’m aware of. This area is far from anyones house, kind of where three properties converge. The east neighbor has a pile on/over the property line that he burns occasionally.

No, we’re on a well. We have a semi-whole-house generator that powers the essentials - well, sump, ejector, fridge, and some select outlets.

First night out, complete. They seem jumpy and grumpy tired this morning. Welcome to your new life, kids.

Just did the first full-blown separation training, as far as this property goes. I know the Old Man won’t do anything so that was no surprise. But Shayney is a wild card. She whinnied once but that was it, with Niko out of sight for extended periods of time while I introduced the dogs to him. When I came back, she was just happily eating hay, not a care in the world. She didn’t care when I lunged him in sight of the dry lot, either. Just kept eating hay.

Success!

Rode the Old Man and lunged a fully tacked workout of the young lady. Going to ride her later today.

One thing I’m not happy with - these screenings didn’t lock in at all. It’s like4" of loose sand. I keep dragging it level with the tractor but I was hoping for a more solid feel.

It should settle. Give it some time.

Glad you got to ride.

Hopefully. It was down for a month, through several rains before the horses came home. And I had plate compacted it. It’s not a huge deal to drag it but that wasn’t in my “every other day maintenance plan” lol

Just did a search for solar chargers and came here…So happy to hear this about Parmak! i bought a parmak yesterday at our MFA(missouri farm store) and came home and googled only to find them 100 dollars cheaper online! Taking it back this morning…

Just what I’ve read here from others building arenas with a screening base: riding on it for a year to get it to solidify seems pretty standard, even if it’s been rolled.

I found my lime screenings (I think you’re using the same?) needed a winter in MN to be firm.

yes indeed. i use limestone screenings in my corrals. It takes a while for them to pack down. The more often you agitate with blade or whatever, the longer they’ll stay. Also…i put them down in layers. Some, let it pack a few weeks, then more… pack down, then more. Deep application takes FOREVER to pack, and it will runnoff in rainstorms too.

No running off in rainstorms, but a 4" lift isn’t unheard of so I’m not sure why it is so loose. Regardless, I’m not agitating it, just leveling it back off so they don’t find the stone base and turn it over. Hopefully it will pack!

And I’ve heard from the best arena builders that if you needed to wait you didn’t have a heavy enough roller to start with.

Obviously a plate compactor isn’t anywhere near a several ton roller, but it feels like I didn’t compact at all. Ah well. We will see how it all turns out. They sure do like to roll in it!

Got the cross fencing done minus digging under the gate - I jumped it for now, will dig tomorrow.

Horses got an hour on it.

I bet they think they are in heaven. Now they will be plotting how to get back in.
