New Forum Fun, Questions and Glitch Reports

Did someone say upthread that an original post cannot be edited? Or just that it cannot be deleted once there is a reply?

The thought of being stuck with an eternal typo in the OP is making my eye twitch. :unicorn:

I was going to use a different emoji there, but once I saw the unicorn option, I had to throw that in.

Edited to add: Holy cow. The array of emojis is crazy. And the part where all the options pop up if you type a colon and start to spell it out is something else. Is that new? Itā€™s new to me! Or maybe I just never noticed it until now.

@halt I think the reason you are not seeing the tree you want ( >Home > Off Topic > The Menagerie ) is that it does not exist anymore.
What you see at the top is the tree that there is.
It is now > Home > The Menagerie, and > Home > Off Course, and > Home > Dressage.

Posts (including the first one in a thread) can be edited forever.

The first post (and therefore the whole thread) can be deleted ONLY if there are no replies and ONLY in the first 24 hours after posting.

I like the horse emojis :horse_racing::racehorse::horse: !!! :grin::grin:

In the sniveling category - I wish the order of categories in the drop-down land category list were in the same order as they were pre conversion.

Iā€™m with you on that one @Where_sMyWhite ! The drop down and the categories page both. Iā€™ll know weā€™ll get used to a new order, but we had that old order forā€¦how long? :joy:

I had to fix a setting that wasnā€™t allowing folks to edit. Thereā€™s no time limit on editing posts now!

I can switch that back no problem. @simkie warned me that was a bold move during beta testing!

Could someone please verify for me the original order so I donā€™t screw it up for you again?

Another snivel (really meaning Iā€™d like a fix but not in the critical needs category) is getting the short previous when the topic is hovered over. Iā€™d like to be able to see a previous of the topic when I am looking at a list of New topics

FWIW, yeah, sometimes wading through the replies can be a bit ā€˜confusingā€™ but I am loving being able to click on ā€˜Newā€™ and getting a list of all the new topics in all the categories and Unreadā€¦ seeing how many and, after clicking on that, being able to see how many unread are in teach topic and going to the first unreadā€¦

I thinkā€¦

Eventing

Endurance
Driving
Western
Racing
Riders with Health Issues
Sport Horse Breeding

The ones between Eventing and Racing I may have out of order as I didnā€™t frequent thoseā€¦

@Simkie ?

Ooooh, I just saw something cool - if youā€™re at the end of a thread, you get a notification that ā€œ(icon icon icon) replyingā€ - so you know to just sit and wait and soon youā€™ll see their posts!

I agree. I love all the options for seeing various threads. Great job there!

I took this screen shot earlier as I think it is a great example of what the knowledge bar at the bottom of the original post has to offer. This one is filled with stuff. Great that you do not have to search the whole thread for that link, etc.

It took me several days, 4-5 maybe, in the beta site to get my feel for things, and that was really only because it was just a few of us with relatively few activities, so not a lot of situations for real-life use, but the learning curve and familiarity really did get better at an exponential rate once we really got in there and USED it

can you define what ā€œaccessibilityā€ means?

Mod1 has already said there was a higher priority request to make the slide bar more prominent

But this isnā€™t FB, which was designed from scratch (and keeps getting re-engineered daily it seems, very frustrating). This is an existing forum interface that fortunately allows some personalizations and some plug-ins.

If Mod says the notifications are what they are, theyā€™re really not that difficult to understand - icon, username, thread title

Iā€™m also loving the ā€œSuggested Topicsā€ at the end of a thread - COTH knows me so well, even in the short time Iā€™ve been active here!

Hahaha, dude, you take such good care of us.

Iā€™ll pull up the old forum on wayback but WMW is at least close, if not right on!

Yes, I just noticed that too! Great feature.

Ok, thanks. So if someone starts off with an insane original post, we still have to quote it for posterity before it disappears?

Although that was the origin of that extremely epic stick art thread some years back, so it wasnā€™t all bad.

One other thing I love is how crazy easy it is to post screenshots - so here is one with a question - how are the Categories that appear here for me chosen (Iā€™m going to assume theses are the ones I visit most frequently), and is there a way to customize this or get it to show more?
image

When I click on "(23 more) it takes me to the page that lists all of the categories. Is there a way to just make that an expandable menu instead?

Otherwise, I really like this format more and more as I learn it. I was offline all day yesterday and the difference from Tuesday to this morning is amazing! Excellent job with tweaking the performance! Much thanks to the dev team as well, I think even those who are unhappy now will return and get used to the new format and learn to love it too.

Okay, hereā€™s the old order from here

Announcements>Events
Announcements>Missing Horses

Discussion Forums>Dressage
Discussion Forums>H/J
Discussion Forums>Eventing
Discussion Forums>Hunting
Discussion Forums>Endurance
Discussion Forums>Driving
Discussion Forums>Racing
Discussion Forums>Western
Discussion Forums>Health Issues
Discussion Forums>Breeding
Discussion Forums>Horse Care
Discussion Forums>Around the Farm
Discussion Forums>Off Course

Off Topic isnā€™t shown because those were only viewable with login. Was itā€¦

Off Topic>Off Topic
Off Topic> Current Events
Off Topic>Menagerie

?

And then:

Tech Help>Tech Help
Marketplace>Giveaways
Marketplace>Hay

And all the archives.

How about the discussion forums at the top, though? Do we want announcements up there? They donā€™t see a whole lot of action!

I literally JUST found out to do that and was returning here to expand the number visible in the hamburger menu.

Categories in the hamburger menu are ordered differently for each user based on which categories they use the most.

The priority is:

  1. Watched categories
  2. Tracked categories
  3. Watching first post categories
  4. Userā€™s top categories
  5. Siteā€™s top categories

Iā€™m so glad youā€™re liking it more as you get more used to it (and now that itā€™s actually working.)

Would it make more sense to have Menagerie under the Around the Farm forum?

Seems that some want to mute Off Topic and Current Events.
Perhaps keeping those two by themselves makes more sense, not having any direct horse/farm connections?
