New Forum Fun, Questions and Glitch Reports

And the same thing just happened again, although I just posted 15 minutes ago. It has not happened before today. Very odd.

@MHM I was also logged out this morning. Would not surprise me at all if that happens occasionally as the devs work through stuff on the back end

The reason you’re able to just click the log in button, and not enter your password here, is because the forum is better integrated with the main Chronicle site–you’re logged in there, so when you click “log in” here, it pulls from your log in status on the main page. If you ever want to log out completely, you’ll just need to go do it from there.

First, I will confess that I use a desktop (iMac) for most of my internet stuff. My iPad is for things mostly like playing games or reading. I need screen real estate when I’m doing stuff like surfing/browsing and the like.

CT, do you periodically clear out things that are running on your iPad??? The double tap and the swipe up for apps you aren’t actively using?

How much memory does your iPad have?

Settings > General > About and scroll down to ‘Capacity’ and ‘Available’

And what version are you running?? It was an older version IIRC?

@leesa1 Thanks for trying to help!

I use Safari, on a MacBook Air. It’s updated.

Someone earlier pointed out to me that there were ads on both sides of the old site too. I remember this. It’s mostly the colors and the added visual clutter of the new pages that bothers me. (I am making an effort to get used to it!)

Maybe a glitch, was posting, post went thru fine, then I was trying to post again and no way to reply, but this showing at the bottom of the thread?
Seems that the program had kicked me out as logged in and now assumed I was a guest.
I logged in again and all is well.
Still wondering why that glitch happened, seem to remember some have reported similar problems?

Here is what I read at the bottom of all threads in place of posting window tab:

—"Hello! Looks like you’re enjoying the discussion, but you haven’t signed up for an account yet.

When you create an account, we remember exactly what you’ve read, so you always come right back where you left off. You also get notifications, here and via email, whenever someone replies to you. And you can like posts to share the love. heartpulse

@Bluey my best guess is the devs are working on back end stuff and that might mean logging people out from time to time. Kinda like adult swim at the pool. All the kids out for a few minutes!

That is exactly the way I felt, kicked out of the pool and wondering what had happened.

I expect you are right, those working on the innards of the site were busy and needed us out of the way for a bit.

You can override the styling of the forum if you like. I’ve removed the circles as I’m finding it hard to read the forum titles with them there.

Pics below. If that’s something you’d want to do to yours, let me know and I’ll find some instructions for you browser.

We’d be happy to add this info to @Simkie’s FAQ too if some members of the community prefer to simplify their view. Thanks!

Happy to write it up for the FAQ if you can provide details, @leesa1

Yesterday evening I was reading this thread and the subject of whether you were offered “Keyboard Shortcuts” or “Mobile View” on the hamburger drop-down was being discussed. At the time I was on my phone (Android) and all I saw was the Mobile View option. Today I am on my desktop and I have the Keyboard Shortcuts listed instead. So, my guess is that it depends on your platform? And whether or not you have a keyboard available (don’t know if it’s that smart)?

Whaaaaa :sob: I don’t have it ANYWHERE! I wish it would show on desktop.

I did add it to the FAQs, though, if anyone is in the same boat with me and can’t find it

I took another look–I don’t have keyboard shortcuts under the hamburger menu in firefox, chrome, or edge, whether or not I am logged out/in or in incognito/private browsing mode.

So it’s not browser dependent, and it’s not USER dependent, and it’s not platform dependent
geez, what else IS there??

@simkie I found this recent thread where someone else was having this issue too.

Does your computer have a touchscreen maybe?

The irony that you of all people don’t have it

YES!! I was JUST thinking through this and wondering if my laptop is being read as a tablet type device!! I have the same thing at the meta board and the demo board (took forever to find the list over at github :joy::joy:) so it’s definitely not the implementation here.

Sad no solution but at least there’s an explanation!

I’ll try ? when back at the computer and see if that’ll pop it up. Keyboard shortcuts have all worked fine, just hilarious that the map is mia!

Thanks! Sorry it took me so long to get back here.
I know I can still receive PM’s and I don’t put anyone on ignore (except for one newish loon that appears here very infrequently and likes to send PMs.) I only want to protect my email, even though it shouldn’t be visible.

I’d like to remove the circles too!
If someone can direct me (as if directing an absolute beginner) that would be great. :slightly_smiling_face:

Here is another option if anyone wants to still see the poster’s avatars but maybe not as noticeably. I’ve included only the first poster and the last poster, changed them to greyscale and reduced their opacity so they do not overpower the topic title. You can still mouse-over and see who created the thread and who lasted posted, but it doesn’t stand out as much.

Also, sticky thread previews have been limited to 1 line, else they take up half the screen.

Version without avatars

Version with subdued avatars only first and last poster

Unfortunately it’s not a straight-forward modification as every different type of browser will have a different way to override a site’s styling. CSS-overriding browser plugins will be the easiest option for most people but I don’t have any experience with those. If anyone else here does and is able to recommend a good/stable one, please do.

On PC in firefox you can override a site’s display manually without a plugin via these steps:

  1. Open a new Firefox tab, type about:config and then click the accept the risk and continue button
  2. Type toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets in the Search bar and click the toggle button on the right hand side. Alternatively double click the word ‘false’ until it turns to ‘true’. Close the tab.
  3. Open firefox’s menu -> Help -> Troubleshooting Information
  4. Find the Profile Directory option and click on the Open Directory button. This is where your firefox files are.
  5. If there isn’t one there already, create a folder in there called chrome, all lower case.
  6. Inside that chrome folder, place one of the following files, depending on which display you prefer:
    6a. Version without avatars: userContent.css (420 Bytes)
6b. Version with subdued greyscale avatars: userContent.css (703 Bytes)
  7. Restart firefox

If anyone else with other browsers is able to convert the instructions and test if it works them, that would be super.

Ideally it would be preferable for the devs to add some per-user styling options but I’m not sure if that’s realistic.

Don’t remember if someone has already mentioned this, I seem to think Simkie did somewhere, but is not in the FAQ’s, just a little extra thing.

When adding a picture from my laptop to a post, if I have the preview window open, it shows the picture as it is loading.
Right below the picture, there will be an option to change the size of the picture, 100%-75%-50%.
Clicking on the smaller sizes will show a reduced picture that doesn’t overwhelm the post.

Just one more neat feature of this site.

Yep, I mentioned upthread it’s a 9.3.5(13G36).
Capacity is 12.5GB and it has 2.9GB still available.
I have always done all of the things like clearing browser/history/cookies/double tapping and swiping up.

I have a desk top and the use of a MacBook Pro, I don’t use either unless I have to because the size of the keyboards and the constant clicking is very hard on my RA hands/wrists.

Just checking
when I do troubleshooting, sometimes I ask basic questions because sometimes I get unexpected answers that help make progress.

Why it keeps crashing
at this point, out of ideas. I use my desktop because I get too frustrated with the Safari UI on iOS.
