New Forum Fun, Questions and Glitch Reports

@Jenerationx

I was having the same trouble with the shadow not showing up when it’s just text in the screenshot. How does it know?! :exploding_head:

I’m guessing this fix should solve most issues though, since if it was just text someone wanted to share, they would just quote it. Right?

Thanks!

It is kind of spooky!

I haven’t heard that they’ve explicitly done anything to fix the speed for which post edits will show up, so my uneducated guess is that it relates to whether the system is backed up with other requests at that moment, which might explain why it’s still variable.

It’s on the list though, so we should hopefully see an improvement there. Edits are definitely supposed to be “seen” basically immediately.

@Moderator_1

This morning when I clicked on the forum, I was logged in as another user. I could see her profile, including her email address. :astonished:

Talk about your houseguest opportunities! I don’t think I need to say that this is a serious problem - but I will anyway.

I couldn’t figure out how to log out of her account, but I was able to log in as myself on top of being already logged in as another user (should I be able to do that?) and now I appear to be myself.

Exactly. It makes it much better for screenshots of whole posts or thread portions so those reply buttons and things don’t look like part of the post though. Great change!

OH MY!!! That would give new meaning to house guest.

This has happened to a few other people, and yes it’s our absolute top priority to resolve!!

Thank you for reporting it. I’m passing on the information immediately.

Me… I preferred the previous light green tones used for the timeline slider. For me now it just blends into the overall black and white tones of the page and harder for me to spot.

I agree with this–I actually preferred the original iteration over all of the changes. But hey, you can’t make everyone happy, and it’s still functional as is, so I’m all good

Y’all been busy!

I like the new slide bar looking more like a browser slide - definitely makes its functionality look more intuitive. BUT, I agree it could use a more dramatic color. I think the previous green would stand out now that it’s bigger

Cool thing I found yesterday - if you’re trying to tag someone, and start with the @, you get a popup of members already in the thread. It appears to be listed in descending order of most recent posters. For example, the first @ I typed brought Where_sMyWhite up, but by the time I got to the 2nd @, it was Simkie on top. REALLY useful when you can’t quite remember how to spell!

It’s a bit more intuitive this way, but I agree that a high contrast color would help make it pop. I think the color it had previously would have worked if they inverted the color (light tract, dark scroll) but I’m happy either way with the newest change. It’s much more obvious as a scroll bar now than the default was.

They said they could play around with colors more, but that just inverting what they had previously didn’t look good. I’ll see what they can do. Thanks for the input!

I was poking around over on the meta and discovered that there IS actually a Discourse app available for both Android and iOS called Discourse Hub:

It looks like it’s entirely possible to use this app to use our forum, but since we use a SSO, when you try to login, it can’t find the login info, so … not possible to use it now. (The error I get is “The ‘external_id’ is required but was blank”)

Not sure if the devs know about this, or if there’s any plan to support it, but it might be one more way to serve users who view the forum from their phone or tablet.

Oh, here’s another one for iOS. I’m not an iOS person so I can’t download this to see if we’re considered a “private” community (requires purchasing the app) or if it works with our SSO set up:

I prefer the new, bolder, darker slider in the new, lighter tract. But the slider could be made a different color, if that would be helpful to others.

I would much prefer a simpler, less busy, avatar-less screen, so if that becomes an option, great.

Overall, I pretty much agree with the concerns that @halt has raised. Not saying that I don’t understand that the new site is what it is, and that certain functions of the old site aren’t coming back.

I’ve always been fine with learning new software – figure it’s good for my brain agility, lol – but I began my career in publishing, and there have been justified complaints (and everyone is entitled to their feelings).

I am also reminded of a comment I read a while back, in a business publication, where the person quoted stated that users of a certain social media giant made the mistake of thinking that they were customers, when they were actually inventory. My feeling is that some users are now feeling a bit more like inventory.

Personally, I’d like to see the site simplified. For instance, in order to log-out, I click on my avatar in the upper right-hand corner, then click on my user name, then scroll down the menu, then click logout – in order words, a four-step process. Why not simply have a logout button to click, without going through all that? Why have a login button which takes me to another page, where I input my username and password, instead of being able to do so on the original page?

I am all in favor of the switched login issue (yikes!) being addressed first.

I’m curious what platform you’re using where you have to actively scroll down a menu to find the logout button? Everything I am seeing on desktop or mobile is: click avatar, click name, click logout. I have never had to scroll?

Another option logout (from desktop) is the keyboard shortcut: ZZ

AHEM… Ummmm you can log out of COTH?

Kidding. It’s not very intuitive to be honest, but it is what it is. Most sites I log into or out of you click your username or avatar and the menu is there, so it is an extra step here, but not a huge issue.

Perhaps the word “scroll” was misleading – I click on my avatar, click on my name, go to the bottom of the menu, hit logout. Not a huge deal, but, when I’m done, I’m done, and I want outta here, lol.

Just now, I tried the ZZ to logout and nothing happened, at least not by simply typing ZZ, so I’ll check that out further.

I’m on Firefox on a MacBook Pro.

I can confirm it works for me on Win 10 Firefox. You can’t have a response window active (obvs, or you just type ZZ there )

There’s a whole list of keyboard shortcuts you might like under the hamburger menu. (If you have a touchscreen computer, the link won’t show, so I also added the list to the FAQ.)

There is a known issue with FF and the shortcuts, and it appears to be due to a setting that allows FF to search when you start typing. I don’t see that behavior, but linking in case you do.

I had the same thought.

Is there any way for the moderator to know if it is actually someone signed in to the wrong account by mistake, or someone just taking the opportunity to speak their mind with impunity?

Asking for a friend. Or 10. Or 100. Lol.

Still edit shows immediately, not complaining about it at all, just happy to report that.

Maybe it will for others soon also.
