New Forum Fun, Questions and Glitch Reports

I hope they can fix it for everyone. It’s made posts with screenshots MUCH better to look at on desktop. Just that little bit of visual separation that makes the brain go “oh that part is a pic” makes a huge difference.

Today I noticed that I only get logged in automatically if I am on Wi-Fi. It does not seem to happen otherwise.

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but me muting the current events category is not working.

It still shows up in latest, and it shows up in suggested topics at the bottom of a thread.

Oh wow. That is not a good thing.
Whatever I did (followed the instructions in the FAQ thread) worked. I do not see CE.

I can post screenshots if needed - I double checked it was muted in preferences, but lo and behold, there they still are in both areas. I’ll try deleting it from the preferences and adding it back again.

EDIT: Nope, didn’t work.

The slider line to scroll by, on the right side of posts, is now highlighted in light green, the slider itself in dark green.
Does that look ok to those that needed a different visual for it?

Would you mind posting some screenshots?

It works for me, and it’s faaaaaab. We’ll figure it out for you, too

Are you on desktop or mobile, and using what browser? Are your muted topics only visible in Latest and in Suggested Topics, or are they also visible in Category view, etc.?

I can tell by your settings that you’ve muted them correctly, so it’s something on our end. Thanks!

@endlessclimb This is how muting is supposed to work:

With muting, you can mute topics, tags, categories, and even users. Each context is a little different, though:

  • Topic : You will never be notified of anything about the topic, and it will not appear in latest.
  • Tag : You will not be notified of anything about new topics with the tag, and they will not appear on your unread tab. (Note that there is a remove muted tags from latest site setting to tweak muted tag behavior).
  • Category : You will never be notified of anything about new topics in the category, and they will not appear in latest. Muted categories are placed at the end of the category list on the Categories page and appear much less prominently.
  • Users : Suppress all posts, notifications, and PMs from a user

I know that Muting won’t make categories completely invisible. I believe you should be able to still see in in the Categories drop-down, for example.

Is it possible that the threads you’re seeing in the Latest view are ones you may have posted in or read previously, and might be Tracking on an individual basis? I believe you can override the mute setting on a category for an individual thread that you want to watch or track. You can check on the individual status of a thread by clicking on the bell icon under the green navigation scrollbar on the right side of the thread.

The slider line is close to invisible for me on Safari with my iPhone.

I’ll let them know. Thanks for the info!

You’re welcome. Thank goodness for screenshots. Imagine trying to describe all this stuff without them! Lol.

I can confirm this. Threads that are watching in Off Topic (because I’ve posted to them) appear in my latest or suggested even though the forum is on mute.

I also get notified if someone tags me or quotes me in a muted forum.

@endlessclimb default setting is that a thread goes to “watching” if you’ve been reading it for 4+ minutes. You can adjust that value in your user preferences. Not sure if that might also be in play with the behavior you’re seeing? Once you’re in a thread for 4 mins, it’ll show up in your latest/suggested, even if it’s in a muted forum.

That’s probably it. Sometimes I can’t avoid the temptation of reading if it’s right there. Same goes with Halloween candy - no self control. I’ll try to adjust the preferences, thanks!

This did make me laugh as I see myself in it… sometimes the temptation to just read a train wreck can be overwhelming.

I did find after the extended CE outage (as it were), I have gotten much more disciplined in reading fewer topics and responding to even fewer of those than I used to. But it isn’t always easy.

I also don’t even bother reading some of those threads on CE, especially the ones with the less fortunate titles.
In a way, similar for other forums, no matter the topic.
I assume everyone just reads what pikes their interest or they are already following.
This being a public forum, it is for all that want to post or read.
Everyone doesn’t has to like it all, just what is of interest to each one of us.
Let others have their say and fun also.
At least that is how I see it, others may disagree.

Different strokes …

Slider looks good. Also, I just edited a post and it was much zippier to show the edit… just a few seconds.

Edit: testing edit time.

5-6 seconds, That’s better then 30-40.

Nvm… that one took 24.

I just edited my last comment and it took 22 seconds to refresh. Desktop, MS Edge
