New horse-help!!

If you are jumping a lot in two lessons a week, that is plenty. No more jumping. Ground poles if you need to work on your eye.

OP, I mean this sincerely. You have a very cute, nice horse who seems game. Enjoy him for what he is and who knows where he will take you. The more often you jump him, the shorter the period of time he stays sound is, and the less fun you will get to have.

There are a number of people on this board who have “done horses” for longer than you have been alive. Most of us really are here to support one another and try to solve problems (and find cheap Tailored Sportsman). If you come asking for suggestions on how to improve your horse’s jumping technique or what you need to do to be able to jump higher with specific questions, you will get a wealth of knowledge.

I feel it’s completely apropos to mention that I loved Sylvester. And Lightening, the White Stallion. And even International Velvet.

This. I BEG you to listen to this advice you are getting. Several people have posted it by now, so you can bet it is correct. CoTHers love horses and riders and only want the best for both. Enjoy your beautiful new BFF, but do it safely for both of you!!

I will. Thanks for the advice guys. And i will get a better pic for you.

This is kind of random… But have you guys ever heard of the olympic horse platinum? I think that is what his name is… I believe he competed in the olympics like 8 years ago. And if I’m wrong tell me!
I found Platinum. He is owned by Heidi Austin-Root. She is the wife or something to Travis Root, who does ride GP. Heidi does the 1.15-1.20. Platinum did jump GP courses with his old rider, Brooke Cudmore. He has never been on the Olympics.

Mystery solved.

Cute horse OP. Can’t wait to see better pictures and video. He seems very flashy!

And more off topic- what do you think of the dover pro sport boots? I just bought a pair and have yet to use them. And I could’ve sworn Platinum did olympics- huh. Maybe i was just dreaming about going there when I met him and my memories got confused.

I can’t believe that this has gone on for 8 pages. must be a slow week at work for everyone.

I can’t believe it either. At least ti has been entertaining…

You’ll have better luck opening a new thread to get advice on the boots. This request is going to get lost here in the middle of this thread. Or just do a search for them and I’m sure you’ll find lots of info on the forum.

I will.

OP-- I assume you are in the PNW, given the names you are dropping in your posts. Who are you currently training with? I am very familiar with Nicole Cobb, and remember Odysseus well. They did well in the small GPs in the area.

I have them - and I like them! I have the neoprene lined ones.

They seem nice and sturdy for the price. My horse has done some STUPID stuff in turn out with them on - and came back with paint on the boots - but no injuries, and the boots stayed where they are supposed to (mine don’t slip at all).

I have even schooled XC with them - through water jumps, and they stayed in place.

Easy wash etc - I recently bought “tack of the days” equivalent boots - and the Dover ones are WAY nicer.

OP, you sound young and very excited about your new horse. And you should be! He looks nice. But as other posters have mentioned, whether or not he’s GP material is not really important, nor should it be a focus for you. What you have is a nice young horse for yourself, that if through some good training and the opinions of any GP professionals in your area has the ability to go on to that level, great…but at the very least he’s going to be a capable hunter or jumper for your needs. Focus on that, not the GP possibilities and asking strangers on the internet whether or not your horse is going to go to the 2020 Olympics.

I also agree that jumping twice a week in lessons is more than enough for his young legs. If you’ve free jumped him and you already know he has a lot of scope, then there’s no real need/reason to free jump him on a regular basis. It’s just added wear/tear on his body that will catch up with him later. Save the jumping for lessons, focus on doing quality flat work and hacking (ie. trail riding if possible) in your spare time. As others have suggested, ground poles can help you work on feel and your eye without the added stress on your horse. Good luck and have fun!

ETA I have the Dover sport boots and I like them. Inexpensive, pretty durable, easy to wash, and come out looking like new. If they get trashed, they’re not painful to replace.

I used to be in the PNW before I moved

I would say he does look more like a TB cross than WB but who knows.
Just want to say that this is a silly comment. My registered Dutch mare is a Warmblood. She is, however, half Thoroughbred. She fits stereotypes of both WB and TB (she is a fairly easy keeper, can be kind of lazy sometimes, but is sensitive, has some deep reserves of energy and can be go-ey.) Pick whatever you want to call her, but both Warmblood and TB Cross are accurate descriptors.

If I was looking at that horse and asked to guess what breed it was, I would guess TB cross as opposed to full warmblood, that’s all I meant. I understand that even full WB can have similar characteristics to the TB

Pretty sure “full WBs” are a mix of a lot of different things. WB is not a breed, it’s a registry (save a select few). My “full WB” is half TB. Visually, she could pass as a well-bred QH or QH cross. My previous “full WB” was often mistaken for an Arabian. He had G-line Hanoverian (Grande) which is pretty heavy and the first TB was 5 generations back.

My point: nitpicking based on phenotype is probably not a strong argument.

TGIF keep it coming!!!

This is from Thursday afternoon, still waiting for jump photos. Or, really, any photos showing enough of the horse to share any thoughts on conformation. Not that I’m sure about this one.

I think we will all be surprised if a video or photo appears of the horse jumping more than 1m with a rider or more than 1.2m free jumping…or I will anyway. The story has certainly been modified since the OP. It seems like a young girl is enamored with her horse (justifiably so based on the video; he seems a sweet, brave, honest and lovely sort) and with stars in her eye she perhaps saw a course of 1.8m jumps where they were not even close. Of course, I could be wrong here, but…
