Official Tokyo Olympic Eventing Thread

Barely 20 penalties separate the top 10 teams. And with no drop score, I would suspect most teams to be riding fairly conservatively to ensure a completion instead of gunning it for time.

Although GB, Ger, and NZ also have above average clock management…

They’re showing the dressage eventing on NBC Sports channel right now (it finally started). They’re supposed to show the Cross Country replay at 12:30 p.m. 1 August.

Same relatively simple hope here for team USA: three rounds with no jumping penalties, and I will be an ecstatic fan.

One thing I do know from past Olympics and 5* events is that the unexpected WILL happen today to some of the biggest names at the top of the leaderboard. Just don’t know who yet.

It might be helpful to the USA’s team mentality today that we don’t have anyone contending for an individual medal after dressage.

with the dressage scores the got I don’t think we have to worry about that

No, not normal. At intermediate level and above there is a halt at the beginning of the test. If you watched closely, there were a couple horses whose canter/trot transition was a bit abrupt, as the horses anticipated a halt. Also there were some (Thomas being one) who just KNEW the rein back was followed by canter (as in the 4*/5* tests), and others were expecting a left lead (“correct” lead) depart instead of the counter lead.

is that start 7:45 a.m. Tokyo time or 7:45 pm EST for much of North America?
I hope the former for the horses’ sake in the heat

Tokyo time. It starts 6:45 pm Eastern in the U.S. 45 minutes from now

I’ve only been following eventing closely for the past 3 years but so many thoughts so far this Olympics. No sub-30 for our team?? On this horse, Boyd has now had a run out at the Pan Ams*, a fall at Kentucky, and a bad test at the Olympics. Can he handle the pressure?

Keeping an eye on Oliver Townend xcountry. I suspect there’s nothing he wouldn’t do, just within the limits of the rules, to win.

Looking forward to see how influential the xcountry will be to the standings, especially the time.

*ETA: Oops WEG

Haven’t found a leaderboard the updates in real time … anyone have a link? Does it exist do you think?

I’ve printed out the order of go, can make notes to have an idea how it’s going.

Yep, in many of these 5*'s the dressage finish will get tossed like a salad after XC.

Testerleg was clean at the Pan Ams. He had a stop at WEG.

Tamie had a run out at the Pan Ams, Boyd & Tsetserleg won individual gold. He also won the 4* national championships in Tryon in the fall & was second at Kentucky in 2019.

thanks!

getting my various website pages ready … the course photos, the live scoring for team and indiv, order of go, the live stream … a lot to keep track of.

I noticed on EN, an article from Maggie Deatrick predicting which pairs are likely to have trouble on XC . She has Doug as Probably No, Phillip as No, and Boyd as YES to have trouble.

MJ she predicts as clear with no time penalties

This link will have the live scores once xc starts. It’s been very reliable for all the dressage so far.

Those are statistically driven numbers. Boyd will have been hit by his fall at Kentucky & the run out at WEG. Wouldn’t put too much weight in that.

Live scoring may be on the link I posted for order of go. If not, try here https://results.nbcolympics.com/equestrian/team-eventing/cross-country/2156078

That link is for teams. Here is the individual live scoring (I think.) https://results.nbcolympics.com/equestrian/individual-eventing/cross-country/2156075

ditto here … the techno streaming sisterhood …

I hope Lucinda Green will be commenting.
