oh my! the"Winston" saga continues!

I’m glad you got lawyers/police involved  I am wondering if someone is playing a trick on her, sending these e-mails from her account. If not, she’s truly whacked, and you need the legal help.

I do think it’s funny that she (or whoever) can send these emails but be normal in public.

I’d block her email personally.
I would have done it long ago- not sure why you kept the line open??

I love that–"…ban her from the shows… detrimental to her career…" Sounds like her student has a screw loose too.[/QUOTE]

I could be wrong, but my instincts tell me that said student is just a part of the delusion, and either does not exist, or has been grossly distorted in the email to enrich the story.

I too have been stalked- very scary, nothing to play around with- this was a coworker, I would see him sitting outside my house in his car, he would follow me home from the train- go through my stuff at work- I finally moved cross country to Phoenix- Then after 3 years in Phoenix, a serial rapist appeared in my neighborhood- for ten months. This was one of the scariest times in my life, I lived within 50 yards of where he was caught. Police were hiding in the trees for several nights trying to catch him- I couldn’t walk alone at night. http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/ss/related/35165.

Being “prey” to a predator is a very, very scary thing. Know that she does not think like you–I am glad you are getting consulting an attorney. Please be safe, and trust your instincts- if you feel the hair stick up on your neck for no reason- know that there is a very good reason!!!
Get a whistle- or a soccer horn to keep at the barn and even take some self defense classes.

what a looney - tune

Hillary - you have a pm.

I tried this. My stalker did not accept the certified letter.
Eventually, however, he had to accept a pair of handcuffs.

Because every piece of email that the stalker sends constitutes evidence that can be used to build a case against her. Nailing a stalker is hard and requires a lot of documentary evidence. That’s particularly true when something that society does not understand–a horse–is the subject of the harassment. As some other COTHers have discovered, cops don’t even take the outright theft of a horse seriously anymore, so they will require plenty of evidence to be persuaded that a woman who wants a horse could actually be a stalker worthy of a protective order and/or police involvement.

ah but your letter, with the note from postperson that it was refused, is admissible in court.
So you have a record that you tried to notify the stalker.

I know how badly that one can screw up your life, I know people who have left Atlanta to get away from ex boyfriends.

But worst are the stalkers you have had no social contact with. And this crazy woman seems to really covet Tommy. And if you think women don’t get protection from stalkers, well, horses are considered “property” and if one gets stalked, uh, hard to get anyone to help you.

I also have to agree with what someone earlier said. I do not think said “student” of this trainer exists but is only a figment of her imagination in trying to lure the OP into selling her the horse.

It’s like saying, “My ‘friend’ has a problem”.

If the student/parents exists, it would be a good idea to try to find out who they are and bring them up to speed on the situation. The trainer sounds unstable and if she’s harrassing you for the horse, she may very well be leading on the family (if there is one) about the horse and even possibly take money or make “arrangements” for delivery of the horse.

Dear xxxx,

As I mentioned previously, Tommy is not for sale, persistence is not going to change that. I would appreciate it if you would cease contact. I have notified the police, and my barn owner, that I was concerned for Tommy’s welfare.

I apologize that your student has an unrealistic trainer who promises horses that are not listed for sale. That is very unfortunate for her, and I could imagine it would be heartbreaking. Hopefully you have learned your lesson.

Thank you and hope you have an excellent show season!

xxxxx

Seriously, I’d really spell it out for her. What a nut.

I agree with Ashby-don’t block her emails, but I also wouldn’t reply except with a letter from the attorney. I know I sound like an alarmist but better to be safe than sorry. Don’t stay at the barn alone, and I think carrying a whistle is a great idea. After the stalker is told to leave you alone this might make her angrier so don’t trust her for a second, and under no circumstances be afraid to make scene in public to make her back off if she approaches you-“Get away from me, I’m calling the police” said at the top of your lungs and a 911 call if she doesn’t back off immediately is the only safe reaction if she approaches you for any reason. Don’t park at the end of any parking lot even if you have to do extra circuits until you find a space, and ask someone in the store (preferably big and male) to walk you to your car, or take a friend with you. Don’t underestimate the danger of some delusional person when you cross them. Stay safe.

OP said the police and a lawyer were now involved and that she would update us post-school.

Good Call on the Police and Lawyer

Fleur,

I have to agree with everyone who has advised that this type of behavior generally escalates! I’ve had 2 stalkers… one was a cop and the other was a lawyer, so it took creativity and cunning to get rid of them both. I got rid of the cop by filing a police report immediately, and, yes, I did embellish a bit when I talked to the police so that they would take it seriously. To get rid of the attorney was a little easier… he worked for a gov’t. agency that my firm did regular business with and I told him that all email from his agency were copied to our firm’s docketing department.

You have make it very clear that 1) You do not want any contact, and 2) You will take any steps necessary to protect yourself and Tommy from any type of harrassment or physical harm.

Now that you’ve contacted an attorney and the police, there are still a few things you need to do to ensure both your and Tommy’s safety.

1ST: as many of us have advised… Microchip Tommy ASAP
2ND: Make sure crazy trainer KNOWS Tommy is microchipped
3RD: Send a certified letter stating the following:

Tommy is NOT for sale.
Tommy will NEVER be for sale to YOU or any 3rd party represented by you.
Any further communication from you regarding Tommy will be forwarded to the police and my attorney.
Do not approach either me or Tommy. Any attempt to do so will be reported to the police and my attorney.

4TH: Padlock the gate and lock Tommy up at night. If he were mine, I’d move him.

In many cases, the police may visit the stalker, so be sure to ask them if they plan on doing so… because many times a visit from the police will make the stalker do something incredibly stupid and dangerous, so you’ll want to be on the lookout for that.

ETA: I also agree with the posters who question the actual existence of the ‘client’. I think the fruitbat is just trying to use some emotional leverage. If only we could round them all up somehow and just put them on an a different island.

Wow, the name Tommy is sticking, even here! His name is WINSON everyone   This “trainer” renamed him herself, or at least that’s what I got from the last thread. The OP said that one of her first emails from this “trainer” went: “That is very unfortunate for Winston (we renamed him as Tommy really does not suit him well).” that was the part that really got me…how delusional can you be to rename someone else’s horse before you’ve even bought him and keep referring to him as such? I do agree with everyone else, microchipping ASAP. Please keep us updated!

PLEASE IGNORE THIS POST. I WAS BEING VERY STUPID AND DID NOT READ FOR COMPREHENSION AND NOW FEEL EXTREMELY EMBARASSED

The only reason cops CAN’T take a stolen horse seriously is because there’s no way to truly identify them. Hence the microchipping.

I just had one further idea that I hadn’t seen mentioned. That is that if your parents are willing to help, the crazy person might take a letter from them more seriously. She seems to think she can intimidate you. Your parents firmly telling her to refrain from contacting their minor child could be effective. Just an idea - I think you are very mature and smart and are handling this great - especially since involving the lawyer and police. Good luck to you and your horse!

Actually I think his name is Tommy and Stalker re-named him Winston. (: At least I think that’s the way I remember it!

How is it that you always attract weird people/stalkers! I am sure that she will not step foot on the property but just in case I would stick a large NO TRESPASSING sign on the gate and padlock the front gate!!!

Oh wow I totally had that backwards…okay I officially call myself stupid now! I even went back and reread the quote! It must be all of these finals I’m studying for that are zapping my brain cells. Sorry guys…I need an embarassed icon or something. I feel so incredibly stupid right now…I can read and comprehend normally I swear!

update for those wondering!

just got home from the lawyer (my uncle).

the police cannot help in any way yet. they suggested we keep the email open in case of future emails so we have them for documentation. no direct threats have been made, so they cannot help just yet. however, a report was filed so its on record that something is up.

my uncle (lawyer) is writing a letter to send (certified mail) saying to not contact us again. (cant go into detail with it on here though)

And we sent an email to hopefully end it all. Short but to the point. just saying that the authorities have been contacted and to expect a letter. he is not, nor ever was, nor ever will be for sale to her. any further contact will be harassment . She is to have no contact with myself or tommy from that point on, and certainly has no say on anything dealing with him. basically along those lines.

he is scheduled to be chipped for flash’s next check up (next week). and there are locks on the gate.

hopefully she will stop here, but if not i am ready. the boys are both away from the road, but moving them is not an option. as far as the downed fences this weekend. I dont think she had anything to do with it. a combo of muddy fields, crazy pony let out after week of stall rest, and warmer weather is what did it I think. They were all broken in a general horse running into them manner.

but gosh i do seem to attract craziness! it is certainly getting old.
