"Old" Pedigree

Thanks danceronice. Native Dancer does seem ubiquitous these days. I have not heard good things about RAN for soundness.

Fun facts: Country Light is also the sire of Gryffindor, the horse who came a hair’s breadth from winning Rolex a few years ago, but poor rider went off course.

Also, I have a friend who said, when she met him, that my horse reminded her of her OTTB. We compared pedigrees and turns out they are both out of Pappagallo mares. Thought that was kind of cool!

ETA: I love the description of Hoist the Flag: “Had a fearsome disposition.”

It’s quite a shame your horse was gelded. Here’s the Wiki on his sire Candy Stripes.

Inbreed to RaN, you get speed and you get shitty ankles that shatter like glass. Once in a pedgree, I don’t mind, twice I’m leery, any more in the first five you’d have to pay ME to take it. That’s a line that needs serious outcrossing.

ivy–ITA with WhiteCamry, it’s a crying shame Hurdle Rate’s a gelding! That’s a case where seeing RaN doesn’t worry me overmmuch as the horse isn’t horribly overloaded with him, NatD, and NorD. And Candy Stripes was a nice, nice sire.

Then let me ask you what your take is on my girl?

shes doubled up on Native Dancer Native Charger and Nearctic

My guy has Mr Prospector and Clever Trick in the fourth generation… The rarest thing about him to me though, is that he has no inbreeding to the fifth cross (err… so equineline tells me at least).

I don’t know if there’s anything else unique about that pedigree but I figured since everyone else was posting theirs… He’s (technically) seven now, and still very green, but he’s very trustworthy with good hooves.

marinebuster: Too much Native Dancer for my taste, but OTOH I like Dr. Fager. If I were breeding her I’d look for a stallion with little/no ND, NorD, or RaN, all of which are overbred, but that’s just me. I’m a pedigree hobbiest/trivia buff, not a breeder.

Thanks guys… He is a beautiful horse that is for sure and he has that competetive attitude alright. We are not sure why he didn’t race but he is built beautifully as I said. I do like that his pedigree is not the norm. If want to see what he looks like just look at Invasor, they look like twins! Right down to those tiny ears that Candy Stripes seemed to pass on…
His bottom line isn’t too bad either. I think he would have made a lovely eventer…I think he was bred for grass they said…but I do not know pedigrees enough to know…
But he got hurt and we haven’t been able to fix him…He was gelded at 4 so he has a huge butt and a lovely neck…and shoulder…

Anyone have any thoughts on my mare?

She actually ends up having Man O’ War at least 3 times if you go back beyond the first page, which I always thought was cool because I read that book about a million times when I was a kid. I know Denny likes Never Bend in an eventer’s pedigree, and she certainly is a fantastic jumper, but I’m curious what those of you who are more educated than I am in the pedigree department think of her.

This is what my Hurdle was like before he got retired…you can mute the sound a lot of people were talking…I think he was pretending to be a dressage horse! doesn’t really go with the pedigree!

TB lines

My mare is a hot little chilli pepper but I love her. Her sire Mt Magazine never raced and I know very little about him. I do know that her half brother Mt Colebrook ran advanced…she is athletic…me I think Training Level is PLENTY!! They look very similar…she really is stunningly beautiful though. She is also tough as nails strong and SOUND…looks like a China Doll…albeit a fire breathing one.
I also love learning about these pedigrees…thanks for the info.

not as old as some- but here’s my girl:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/singing+native

I have come across the mare Brown Berry in pedigrees occassionally, used to work with a stallion out of her. He was a nice boy and I always like seeing her name in there.

Candy Stripes

There is a mare going through the OBS sale this month who is in foal to a son of Candy Stripes.

Her name is Sharpbill. Stallion is Leroidesanimaux. He stands at Stone Wall Farm.

I would love some input on my gelding’s pedigree, if anyone would be so kind.

If you expand it two generations, there’s Hyperion, Man O’War, War Admiral, Bull Dog, and Tourbillon. He’s a 2003 baby. So a lot of these “old” names seem fairly close, considering how young he is. Only one RaN and no inbreeding through the first 5.

Would you guys considere it rare, or not, to have four Triple Crown winners in a pedigree? Affirmed, Seattle Slew, Secretariat and War Admiral.

Would someone be willing to share their thoughts on my mare?

Thought I’d play as well. Here is my crew.

Show Me The Man

He has War Admiral way back From Bright Feather

this is fun

i love learning about all this! thanks for the thread! i have NO idea about inbreeding etc. but i looked at my mare and she has in breeding twice on the bottom- damascus and turn-to

here she is:
http://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pedigree.cfm?page_state=ORDER_AND_CONFIRM&reference_number=6152317&registry=T&horse_name=Tambos Jazz Dancer&dam_name=Jazz High&foaling_year=2001&nicking_stats_indicator=Y

i recognize a few names in her pedigree and have researched it a little bit- regardless of it though- i would clone her if i could!

My mare has some old lines still on the first page…and a fairly old fashion pedigree. She herself is only a 2000 model so will hopefully be around for a while!

Menow, Tourbillon. Mamoud and Pilate all on the first page.

She was bred to run on the turf and with her jump, could have probably been a very nice timber horse…but she ended up in my hands instead of racing. (16.3h and nice mover and scopey jumper)

She evented with me and is now having a few babies before going back to eventing.
