Opinions on DHH crosses for jumping?

I’m wondering how the mares can be civilized enough for the amount of vet work involved in the reproductive part, but not civilized enough to get their feet trimmed.

The mare is terrible shape overall. Too darn thin and clearly it STILL wasn’t enough for the foal.

That’s a good point. You can’t just sedate the bajeezus out of the mare for everything.

I dunno, EMS is coming out of this looking not so great. I certainly would not support/use them.

This!!! Zoomed in on that foot, because wow:

There are ways to get feet trimmed when you need to (sedatives, twitch, stocks, etc)… it’s downright cruel to just leave feet in that condition…

Edited to add: The one recip mare I’ve known (leased from a facility that provided recips) was a nightmare to trim. But we did it, even though it was an absolute ordeal, because it was the right thing to do for the horse’s sake.

Assuming any of that part of the sequence of events is true…

A horse that cannot safely be handed for all the basic horse things is not a suitable recipient mare and I am STUNNED that a facility would accept into its mare band a mare that is not safe for basic handling, would breed her, would send her out, and that anyone would receive such a mare and decide “well we’ll just neglect her” as the solution to the problem.

If someone was sending me a horse to have for a year and wanted me to sign a contract that said that I would refuse that horse.

I don’t know how these things work, but heck no to neglecting a horse for a year at my house.

Has anyone heard from EMS? I want to find out if it’s their practice to send emaciated mares with horrific feet.

This. So much this.

It’s typical to use stocks for trimming draft horses. I’ve never seen it IRL but enough on reputable SM or print sources.

I have a small mare who is getting better about her feet but we had her tranqed to trim several times.

I think broodmares need excellent hoof care because that extra weight really stresses their hooves and the body changes as well. I knew one older mare who was basically laminitic the last couple weeks, but recovered with no rotation after the foal was born.

Also I’ve seen pasture horses getting very intermittent hoof care and it never looked like that.

Those hooves are a medical emergency IMHO. Like out of a Pete Ramey case study.

I haven’t been on COTH forums in years, but I did say that over on FB. I own a vet practice about 1.5 hrs from EMS, and my husband worked as an associate vet there, many years ago. In addition I have foaled out many of their recipient mares, for my clients. Regardless, Kate doesn’t care about the bad shape her horses are in. She put this ad out, with this photo, which tells me she’s perfectly fine with how this foal looks.

This is it right here.

If the mare looked amazing other than her feet, I would MAYBE be more lenient. But this overall picture is neglect, pure and simple. How long did KS have this mare? Maybe, just maybe (& I’m trying to keep EMS in a better light here) they sent her to KS at the time of transfer, saying oh just FYI, she’s not great for her feet- then 15 months later (that foal looks to be about 3 months?) when KS hasn’t touched her feet, she is spinning their words around. I hope this is it.

Ah yes… the horrifying and maddening tale of Monica Thors…

Here is the original thread on COTH from… 2014? Of course, many links will no longer work and Thors’ Facebook page with all the horrifying photos and cutesy pics for Thanksgiving or Christmas or St. Patrick’s Day or whatever no longer exists.

Lol. Don’t hold yer breath.

In my opinion a horse that cannot be safely handled for basic care should be euthanized. If a good trainer is not able to fix the behaviour issues, the horse is inevitably going to end up in a bad place and / or hurting someone. Neglecting an animal like this in order to profit from it is shameful.

Because this needs to be said many times over and ANY human doing this should face charges.

I hope the Karma bus is heading to Kateville with a big dose of maybe you need to miss a few meals and see how you like it.

I don’t think many people in the equine industry understand that recipient mare is often the last stop before euthanasia. Many of them are not overly handleable, nor sound.

The FB posts from prior staff say that Kate doesn’t believe in feeding any concentrate at all and only permits them to give each mare 3 flakes of hay per day. OF COURSE they are in deplorable condition! My ponies eat more than that! Sickening.

A very sad indictment indeed - use and abuse in a pure form.

Poor mares considered in dollar terms for having a viable uterus, no matter the neglect perpetrated prior to their dispatch.

Honestly then, I’m fine with the horse being euthanized. Being euthanized is not the worst thing to happen to a horse.
