Yep. PintoPony got it right, That’ one’s “Sylvester” completely ridiculous, but watched it over and over.
I own it on Amazon Prime, bought it years ago for a niece to watch. I have not seen it streaming free anywhere.
I found Sylvester on Amazon Prime and watched it and yes, while the premise is ridiculous, it is one of the better horse movies I have seen. Acting/cast is great, riding & information is good/accurate, they dont obviously switch out horses/riders, etc. I loved it!
If you’re talking about the first part of The Horse With The Flying Tail, before the Team footage, that’s all fictionalized (and the abuse etc is explicitly false). He was a Remount bred horse. That said, the footage of him and his adventures after he gets to Hugh Wiley is a wonderful taste of history, and really great.
Aha, good to know! Interesting choice with the early footage (I wonder why, just to sensationalize the story?), but it would have been nice to know his TRUE origins. I guess that would have been less “dramatic”?, but it WAS a documentary…
I wish they had had some interviews with the riders/coach, true “Doc” style - I would have loved to hear that.
It probably isn’t available online, but does anyone know the name of an old horse film that focused around a young boy and his single mother living on a farm, I’m pretty sure much of it was in winter as I remember a lot of snow? Cowboy gets together with the mom and there is a wild black pony that the cowboy tames by putting a rock in its ear.
I remember renting the VHS from the library all the time but even through my random Google searches I’ve never been able to recall the name of the film.
That sounds like The Year of the Black Pony by Walt Morey and if there’s a movie I need to see it!
Yes it is! Happiness happiness!
Holy smokes how did you find that?! Yes it is, thanks!
I remembered the book but had the title wrong. I thought it was Year of the Pony and I thought it was written by a Walter, but the last name started with an M, not Walter Farley. SO, I googled “year of the pony Walter M” and found the book. “Year of the black pony movie” brought it right up. Google was feeling kind for sure, cause I got to it with the title and author of the book incorrect.
I should have waited an hour or so and Ezra would have made that search easier lol.
Miracle of the White Stallions is on YouTube
Re. Nautical - echoing what others have said - the “early life” (Nautical’s foal years and basically everything pre-USET) was, in the movie, almost entirely fiction/a Disney Dramatization, there was no known abuse. In reality, Nautical was foaled at the South Springs Ranch in New Mexico (the S/Spear brand on his jaw was the ranch’s brand), sent to AQHA Hall of Famer Suzanne Norton-Jones for training as a 3 YO in 1947, his owners sold him, and eventually he went on to be trained by the likes of Joe Green, Morton W. “Cappy” Smith and Pat Dixon, all three of whom are in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. He went by a few different names - his original registered name with the Palomino Horse Breeders’ Association was Peter De Oro, when he was with Cappy Smith he went by Pronto, and Pat Dixon showed him under the name Injun Joe (no idea if Nautical went by that or some other name when Joe Green had him). Hugh Wiley bought the horse in 1955, named him Nautical because Wiley had been in the Navy, and competed with him on the USET until Nautical’s retirement in 1960.
@awaywego I am such a dinosaur I still have a combo VHS/DVD player.
A lot of my H/J shows from the late 80s-90s were taped to VHS by a company that worked the showgrounds.
Also have a Ralph Hill clinic with me & DH on VHS.
I will gladly pay postage if you would ship me your VHS movies ðŸ™
My favorite oldies:
National Velvet - with Liz Taylor & Mickey Rooney
The Red Pony - not a totally happy one
My Friend Flicka - with Roddy Mcdowall
Not so very old, but qualifying as rare-ish:
Into the West is a good movie. Irish Traveler kids “steal” a horse & hide him from the mean gentleman who bought him as a Showjumper.
Champions - based on the true story of steeplechase jock Bob Champion & Aldaniti
This series is called The Yellow Rose. It also stars Cybil Shepherd, who can really ride. I helped her find a place to practice her riding.
The Lion and the Horse was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and coupled with The Black Stallion, definitely contributes as to why I have what I do in the back yard.
Yep, I am one of those. Here’s a link to The Lion and the Horse:
The Gypsy Colt with Natalie Woods is wonderful if you can find it
I am ruined (in the best way) for black horses by this film and The Black Stallion. I haven’t seen/been able to find this one since I was a kid…
Speaking of lovely black horses, did anyone get into The New Adventures of Black Beauty back in the day? Or even its predecessor, The Adventures of Black Beauty? I grew up on the NZ-based one and only ever got to see a couple episodes of the original series. I did download the Australian follow up series but couldn’t get through the whole thing.
@2DogsFarm, are you my mom in disguise? I have so many shows and clinics on VHS, I need to get them transferred to dvd but I’m afraid to check to see if they are still functioning
@BayBondGirl I watched a Black Beauty series on Nickelodian in the early 80s - would that have been the same?
I would pay $$$ to get the Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit on DVD!
@awaywego That sounds about right! That would have been the original British one. The NZ one was in the 90s I believe
