Really, Dressage Hub?

Opening the cardbordeaux…

Cheers!

It was an early Christmas present to the good people of COTH

How does banning work? Temporary or permanent? Can people come back via new names or do the moderators check IP addresses?

It’s usually permanent, although in the days of Current Events some people just lost CE
access and weren’t banned from the whole site. There’s one poster in OT now who that happened
to and she’s constantly reporting other banned users who have created new names, but she’s back because apparently she asked the mods and they said yes.

The old site didn’t have the ability to check IP addresses but it seems this one does, because there has been a spate of users banned recently for no apparent reason other than the fact they were previously banned under a different name.

I hear the mods sometimes issue warnings first and other times just ban with no warning or explanation. I guess it depends how bad the infraction was? Hard to say…some seem to get banned for the littlest thing while others have a long history of insulting, hateful or inflammatory posts.

How do you know someone has been banned? Is there a list somewhere?

it shows up on the member info screen

I am soooo happy to hear this, I might post here more often again! Manni has even cooled her jets too. Merry Christmas to ME! I guess reporting people 500x times over a year pays off LOL.

Apparently not - that discussion was a big part of the thread which got him/ her banned

Interesting you reported people more then 500 times ?? I guess thats a record…

I was being sarcastic… still mods were very slow on the uptake.

yeah. I saw that… must assume we didn’t read the other forums. no one really cares, just don’t lie. The two issues I have here, Manni and csaper lie about what they said. we can’t have any integrity of conversation after that. sorry.

Interesting accusation… do you have proof for it??

Hmmm. Now I am super literate and work in a world where what you say is taken seriously and if you say something that’s taken wrong especially in writing or make a factual error, you own it and rectify. That is what you do to retain credibility in my professional world.

In my horse world I meet lots of folks who honestly are not that literate. Our barn is a club so I get to see lots of written communication. I have realized folks have trouble taking in a chunk of information, getting the main idea, and responding consistently.

This isn’t shocking to me because my job involves teaching those skills and I know folks don’t graduate from our local high schools being good at this.

COTH tends towards the literate user which is why I enjoy it.

But the horse world in general not so much.

I do think COTH gets some posters who abide by the very common practices in our culture of, blast off and don’t check how your message sounds, get all defensive when it’s challenged or misunderstood, and take up tangents rather than the main idea. For these folks, owning their errors is humiliating and they feel they need to be really defensive about always being right in order to maintain credibility.

It’s a clash of cultures really.

So someone might seem to be lying about what they said but really they don’t know what they said, and can’t stand at a distance from their own writing to see how others might take it that way.

If those sort of posters became a major trend on COTH I expect I would drift away because I do find it tiresome.

If you look under the screen name on any thread (yours says Grand Prix) it will say Banned, Banned will appear under their name on all of their previous posts.

It occurs to me also there is the whole realm of private messages that we don’t get to collectively see and if a poster began individually harassing another member that way, that might be seen as more serious than just dumbass comments in forum. Also I don’t go near Off Topic  though I m glad it exists to siphon off the cray-cray.

Thank you for your post, Scribbler. Interesting point. It explains quite a bit.

I think that some people really do become unhinged with their PMs, perhaps not realizing that the Mods can look at them.

You may be super literate, but that post is kind of shocking… I do assume you are talking about me if you talk about those folks…so I get super defensive about my errors because I feel humiliated by them??? Wow!! Thats an interesting way to argue in order to destroy other points of view… Simply calling them errors…

Obviously you defend with your post (maybe I get that wrong as well) common practices in the American culture. The common practices I am concerned about are mobbing and talking bad about people who have no chance to defend themselves, I really hope you don’t include those in your post … :frowning:

I did not intend this to apply to any specific individuals.

What I was trying to say was what looks to other posters like “lying about what they’ve said” might not be deliberate lying.

To readers the posts sound contradictory and even aggressive, but the poster doesn’t understand how that might be, and it spirals into mutual antagonism. And yes this can feel like an attack to the poster because they don’t understand how their posts are being read.

I certainly see all kinds of online forums go badly off track because of the things I’ve described above.

Is why I am not on many online forums.

I find it however interesting to watch and analyze how it happens.
