Rein-back in Grand Prix

If they’re competing at 5* level, they should definitely be capable of riding well enough to get good scores.

I don’t care about scoring, don’t even know what is loaded with points and what isn’t… but training these movements toward perfection is def part of my ‘program’. I think our halt is nice and our reinback is pretty. They are the ‘bits and pieces’ part of our lesson.

This is my take on it too. It’s not a sexy exercise.

Reinback is not taught in dressage until at least Elementary. This means before teaching reinback, as opposed to a horse just moving backwards when asked, the horse and rider combo should be able to collect and extend, and should be able to walk, trot and canter 10 m circles and lateral work in walk, trot and canter.

Not only does this mean that the horse has the muscle and strength to do it correctly but also forward has been definitely established. If forward has not been established first, the horse can get the idea that backwards is what they can do - and according to my Mum - you have never experienced something so scarey. If you kick or use the whip they go backwards faster, they continue to go backwards until they hit something or fall into or over something.

That is also why I don’t ride that movement every day.

And yes I have been taught that the reinback is a forward movement, just like you don’t want them to walk or trot backwards, even though the horse is actually moving forward and in dressage a halt is referred to as being both round and square.

There are steps to learning dressage, so the horse is not over faced and gets too much pressure and is subsequently fried. It also stops things happening, like if you teach piaffe before you are supposed to, you might get into piaffe or passage, but you might not be able to get out of it.

There are large portions of this thread where I have nothing nice to say in regards to the flippant attitude shown… yikes. Talk about the dunning Krueger effect.

You were of course referring to me i suppose. Good news: i do not care what you think of me.

Even better news: Your halt from a walk is “nearing perfection”.

perfection is the goal, yes.

You will realize someday how much you don’t know, and will cringe at your today’s comments. Until then, keep climbing the ladder - right now you have absolutely no clue how high it goes, or where you are.

That feeling when your coach says “perfect” truly can’t be beat.

We got one this weekend on one of our simple changes in the serpentine. Never stop striving for that goalpost :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

well, once again, i don’t care what you think of me. It’s a fact.

That’s great, because I’m no GP rider. But you ought to put your shovel down and quit digging around the others that are. Perhaps you might learn something.

Anyone else reminded of Amber?

If it were that simple, why does this thread exist? You know, the one about less-than-stellar reinbacks at GP?

Reasons discussed above in my opinion. Why do you think? Just too hard?

I’m mean, I’m so lowly that I can struggle with my halt, which is no where near what I would call perfection.

Because perfection would be forward, dead even in the contact, deep behind, square every time, not crooked ever, not falling apart moments before or after immobility, sitting on what feels like a tightly coiled but obedient spring waiting for the next cue.

Whoa, sure, yeah, they lock up and plant their feet and stop and don’t move (ETA: and that’s needed for the trail riding I do, but is not even remotely close to a dressage halt). But perfection, dressage perfection? Maybe 1 in 50 will feel close, but there is always room for more.

@eightpondfarm, I’m curious about your coach’s credentials. Is she a USDF medalist? Silver? Gold? Have her students consistently moved up the levels in the show ring?

and now you’re going after my coach? I was wondering when that would happen…(this is … so predictable).

I guess some people want to be a victim no matter what. Don’t anyone dare state that everything done isn’t R+ or we might have a full blown meltdown.

Where is that safe space?

ETA: Prediction: I’m going on ignore, because god forbid someone is challenged in their methods or thoughts.

Going after? LOL, talk about predictable. I merely inquired about her credentials. But it’s looking like there’s not much to talk about, or you would have told us. Want to know about mine?
