riderless horses and horseless riders?

As someone who is paying for keeping my 3 horses, bought land, and take care of them daily I am offended that someone would make these demands especially in a tight economy. Money doesn’t grow on trees and since we here are offering to allow our horses to be ridden for free I am offended. All she had to say was her riding ability or what she can handle and not phrase it in a demanding way such as MUST that would be something you would say if you were in the market to spend your own money and this is not a thread to advertise. When those of us so generously offer to allow people to ride our horses and someone starts demanding specifics instead of saying what they can handle, it’s rather ungrateful so I did feel a need to say something. I’d hate to see this thread closed down because of advertising or to have riders dictating to those of us with the horses their REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS. Yeah, I do find that offensive but I also said that perhaps the poster didn’t understand that since they were new. The way it was written it was looking as though she were expecting to pay something and we don’t do that here and those who have been in COTH for a while know it’s not allowed. That would be the classifieds for a ad fee.

So if you think I was offensive, why didn’t you say her post was offensive because it was to me. Maybe I should have let it go but I became defensive when I read it. I don’t think I went too far, but tell me how you would have handled that gut reaction. Are you a rider looking for a ride or a horse owner? I would expect there’s a big difference in the perspective.

As I see it she was looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Tell you what I’m going to do. I’m taking out all of my posts in this thread except for this one at least for now and also my offer of my horses to be ridden for free. I will place an ad somewhere and offer them for a fee from now on and then people will have every right to tell me their requirements and I will also have my own requirements of a rider for my horses. It will be in an advertisement though.

If you choose to keep your post then my comment will remain, your call. I’ll come back and remove this post too if you delete yours. I don’t need the trouble by keeping this going and I don’t want to cause trouble in this thread.

If you think it’s hard for someone to make it when they don’t own a horse and are looking for a horse to ride for free then what do you think it is now days to pay for keeping a horse then someone comes along looking for a free horse to ride with demands? That’s my perspective and why I responded as I did. Maybe you should have asked her why she was making demands.

Perhaps she was asking for “must have this” and “must have that” because that’s all the rider in question can handle. I don’t know ridingmom3 from Adam, but I try not to ASSume the worst in people.

And for the record, I am a horse owner–not that that should make a lick of difference in this discussion since I was well aware of the cost of horse ownership for my 16 years of horseless riding. I appreciate anyone who is honest enough to admit that if they were going to take on a horse’s expenses that they MUST have x, y, and z requirements met rather than taking on an animal that they can’t handle. I am well aware of how much a horse costs, and I gather that ridingmom3 must be aware of it as well since she offered to take care of farrier/vet/etc.

According to the rules of this thread, leasing for expenses only is allowed–you just can’t ask for an additional lease fee (which would amount to profit). If you are nice enough to allow your horses to be ridden for no fee, then that’s very generous and kind. But it’s not a requirement of the thread. I would also venture to guess that whether you admit it or not, you DO have some basic requirements for who rides your horses.

“Don’t want to cause trouble” and “posting dramatic rants” are incompatible concepts. If you don’t want drama, don’t start drama. Some of us are trying to STOP your drama but it’s not working.

There is a big, big, big difference between asking for a free ride on an A horse (which, by the way, would still be totally reasonable if she were a very capable catch rider) and offering to pay all expenses on a 2’6" A horse, possibly an old packer who’s on his way down. Weren’t you JUST talking about the expenses of horse ownership? If someone’s willing to support a horse at an A barn–which is generally $600+ monthly for board alone–then I think they can and should make some demands of what kind of horse that would be. If a horse owner doesn’t like the requirements, then they can ignore the request.

Anyway, if you want to be a kid about it, that’s your business. But seriously, you get my Overreaction of the Week award.

Riderless Horse(s)

1, possibly 2 riderless horses in Orange.
Nice warmblood mare located in Orange Park Acres needs someone to ride her 2-4 times weekly. Lovely mare, 5 yr old, still green but good mind. Looking for someone who is consistent and can commit to riding her on a regular basis. May be opportunity for someone who would like to do some showing .
Jumper type.
Also, older warmblood gelding coming off of lay-up who will need TLC. Lovely horse and could be used for trail riding, hacks or possibly low hunters depending on how well his recovery goes.
Please PM me.
Hi! I was browsing the riderless horse/horseless rider thread, and found very few in Southern California…I was wondering if you found anyone for your riderless horses yet? My guess is yes since it looks like you posted it around August, but I thought it was worth a check

A “free lease” means the person pays expenses but not extra on top of that. If that was the part that offended you, Susan, then you shouldn’t be. It’s still a lot to hope for, as horses of that level are usually leased out for a fee on top of expenses.

O

I’m pretty low on funds at the moment, due to my being a college student… but I am up for a reasonable 1/2 lease or anything you can offer me  not being able to ride is torture! Guess I should mention that I’m in Northwest NJ!

Thanks!
Horseless Rider: Louisville, KY

Another poor college student. I worked a herd of 19 naughty polo ponies over the summer, and learned to ride polo. I’ve done some novice dressage and some hunters, but I wouldn’t be a prime candidate to school your 3rd level dressage horse. I’m up for hacking, ponying, or otherwise getting back on whatever the discipline. I’ve only been riding for about 4 years, since I don’t count my starry eyed youth.

I’m also willing to do some barn chores for ride time, whatever is available. Let me know if you’ve got anything available in the Greater Metro Louisville Kentucky area.

Thanks!
Kathleen

Riderless horse Chicago Suburbs

I have a six/turning seven year old Westphalian TB mare who has competed through first level dressage and jumps a bit. She needs someone who is an intermediate rider as she is sensitive to the aids and quite smart, but she is a fairly strait forward ride. I am moving for a job and can’t take her with me. My trainer is putting in one or two rides a week but I can’t afford to have her ride her full time.

PM me if interested, I have links to pictures, etc.

epsilon - I’m about to send you a pm

Baltimore, Maryland horseless rider

23 year old hunter/jumper rider, have ridden since I was 5. Rode throughout lower, middle, and upper school and at college. Retired my show mare, now back in Baltimore after graduating in May. Take one lesson a week at the farm (because of my commute every day in the opposite direction), but would LOVE to have any other opportunity to ride any type of horse/pony. Would gladly do chores in exchange for riding. References available. PM me please. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Riderless horse in Orange County California

Nice horse in need of a half leasee. Hunter/jumper. PM for details

i’m a horseless (well sort of) rider looking to ride whatever in Northeastern pa or into Nj. (i’m in the Poconos)
I’m a junior, been riding the hunters for 10 years, have a lovely 3’ hunter of my own but am looking for a little diversity. I have alot of experiance with green beans, jumpers, eventers, and of course, hunters. Also have limited dressage experiance. Most of my experiance is with ponies and green beans. Does anyone have a few horses that need to be maintained? Let me know! I can also provide references.

Philosopher to Sealy?

Hey Philosopher,
If you are that down and desperate for a horse fix, are you willing to go to Sealy for a ride? I know of someone with horses who is willing to trade saddle time for occasional help around the barn. She has a significant range of horses, but there are one or two with h/j backgrounds… Maybe?

riderless horse in culpeper, va

I am in Culpeper, va and I have two thoroughbreds.
One is a 10 year old 17h grey. He is a super sweet guy- nice foundation in dressage doing well over fences about 3’ and movement to die for!
The other is a 16.2h 12 year old bay. He is being foxhunted by a friend- aparently they jumped a 4’ log with a 5’ spread the other day out hunting-didn’t know the guy had it in him!- he isn’t too keen on his dressage but he is put up with it. He really just loves to jump.

I am currently pregnant so I don’t want to take the chance riding even though I really do trust my two guys it isn’t worth the risk to me (plus the babies really make my balance suck!)
I am also needing to move them to another barn- personal reasons for the barn owner- so if anyone knows of anywhere that would be great too!
