Shoo fly leggings, do they seem more poorly made this year?

Hi all,

Just a non-important topic. I’ve used Shoo Fly leggings for years and a pair usually lasts a summer. This year’s set seem to have fallen apart early and I’m on set 2 in the same summer.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me / my set?

I’m just curious, thanks!

Maybe your horse is just rougher on them? Mine are going on their third year. They look a bit worn and will probably need to be replaced next summer, but are still usable. Since I did buy them three years ago and yours are new, maybe the quality has gone down a bit. Curious of what others will say.

Just bought some maybe a month ago. So far, so good. My horse is out 24/7 in the wilderness. Well not really, but it’s not exactly manicured.

I’m glad someone asked this! I bought my first ever set in late May, based in large part on the reviews that said people usually got at least 2 seasons out of them. My guy lives out 24/7, but I hose them off regularly.

By early August, two of the four were extremely worn away around the fetlocks, and the boning was actually visible in one. Forget two seasons — I’m just trying to get them to last until October.

This years shoo-fly leggings don’t seem to be holding up like the previous years’ leggings. The boning was showing within a month!

My horse IS out 24/7 in his private pasture with a shared run-in. He’s been wearing them for about 5 years in the late spring-fall. All previous years leggings lasted the whole season. Not this year.

They do work really well and IME are worth it. But I’m just wondering what others’ experiences are this year. They seemed to fall apart so easily this year!

I bought a set for the first time this year and they seem to be holding up fine. Horse is out about 16 hours a day.

I bought some for my mare in July - actually the first time I’ve bought them. They will last the season, but probably not long into next season. She is out 24/7 in a dry lot (except for an hour a day on pasture). She rolls a lot and the surface is either stone dust or hard ground, so that’s a situation that would be hard on the leggings.

They have changed and no longer wear well. They used to last 2 years for 24 x 7 wear. Now they start to drop around the fetlock early on and became worn, plus chafe. I’m on the lookout for a new brand, so suggestions are welcome.

I agree that the quality has decreased. The first summer I used them I got an entire season out of all of the boots. The second season (last year) I had to replace about half of them before the season was over. This year the boots barely made it a couple of months. I won’t be buying them again.

I have the same problem as all y’all - my mare wears them practically 24/7 on full turnout and the bones at all of the fetlocks have popped out. It’s still staying up but it’s not great and they’re not lasting past this year.

My guy wears his 24/7. Last year’s made it all season, although they were on their last legs by fall. The ones I purchased this year made it through July and fell apart. The second set was giving out within the first week (boning visible, seams failing, etc.) I’m going to be struggling to get them through until the end of fly season here. Such a shame, because it’s a great product.

Will definitely take recommendations for alternatives if anyone here has them!

I was thinking the same thing. I got a new pair this year. My previous pair lasted 2 summers. This pair won’t. The hinds always seem to rub on my guy, just above the hoof. I don’t know why. But the boning is showing much more in this pair much sooner. My guy wears his 24/7 but is stalled during the day at out at night.

For those looking for an alternative, I’ve seen great reviews of stomp stoppers:

I was pretty disappointed in how my shoo flys held up last year :-/ Planning on going this route next!

The boning pops out on the sides of several pairs of mine. I thought maybe it was just my horse, or I got the wrong size or something. Sounds like I’m not alone!

My poor guy wears them until they fall apart like a little ragamuffin.

I didn’t think much of it, but yes! My gelding’s hind pair was pretty beat up within a couple of weeks this year, they definitely won’t make it another season. Annoying for the price. I’ve had sets last 2-3 seasons in year past.

I usually get 2 seasons, but I don’t bank on it. Mine are always well worn after season one.

I use the Stomp Stoppers, too. They hold up a bit better. But they don’t fit quite as benignly for my full size horses.

Mine are on year two, but I probably bought them 3 years ago. I tend to buy a couple pairs at once. The boning has popped out, but doesn’t seem to affect their effectiveness. These will probably be done at the end of this year though.

I lost my couple year old pair in a house fire last October, so I waited until this year to pick up a new pair. Once I saw the quality of them, even in the packaging, I didn’t bother to buy a new set.

My Mom also had to buy a new pair for her 19yr old now retired show gelding, who is not a rug wrecker, stomper etc. He is great with all his clothes other than a roll in the mud every once and awhile. She bought a new pair this year and they look awful compared to the older pair on his back legs…

I bought a different brand at Equine Affaire last year after being unhappy with that year’s Shoofly Leggins. They are looking a little ratty, but I do believe they are holding up better than the 2021 Shoofly.

My horse’s Shoo Fly’s are holding up OK but they aren’t going to last past this year.
I got some a couple years ago and they still had the soft fuzzy binding at the bottom. They wore out in 2-3 weeks and the stays were rubbing. This years have the black nylon binding and that is working better but they are starting to look pretty rough although nothing is popping out of them yet.
