Show Hunters of the past

Dave Kelly?

I’ve heard him say, many times, that Katie and Conrad were the best riders he has had, and he thinks Katie is the best on a hunter, but I haven’t ever heard him list his big 3. Let’s hear 'em!!

Thank you Race. Had totally allowed that to ebb into whats left of my memory. Me too, that was horrid.

I never met Mark Bliss, but when the other fellow arrived up here, he was intent on letting people know of his experience, and although he was quite a bit younger than me, I was aware of the fact the was not any sort of brand name. He earned quite a bit of distinction for a story wherein he was going to retire a horse, which he did retire, after he cashed it out at the slaughterhouse. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Lets just say that some of things Jr did in his life to adults, children and horses makes the Chicago 23 look like boy scouts.

Mark just would sell a horse to three people at the same time.

I, too, was at Lake Placid that year. I remember everyone talking and no one believing it. Jack Lowe, was the vet.

Riot Free was a brown horse, owned by Edie Spruance. Not much mover, but he could jump. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Duh! That’s it…I give up. Over the hill to Sunny Acres I go. Let me just hitch up my Depends for the short walk to doddering senility!

When Tightrope was Good,He was Very,Very Good…But When He was Bad,He was Rotten!!!

Showponymom, do not fret over being a grey panther, the paddles are like a tazer without the sting.

BAC we did mention Navy Commander, um about 4 pages ago. Were you at Devon when Ernie gave him to Betty? Lovely lovely gesture, thought it was an engagement present. But it might have been wedding, no engagement. (okay this is bad, arguing with self)

This link seems to be pictures from GM’s book posted on an Italian website. I hope it works

Radio talk, you expect me to remember 4 pages back? My memory is even worse than I thought. I was not at Devon, in fact I was struggling to remember who actually owned/showed the horse, thought it might be Mrs. Randolph or the Cunninghams, guess I am wrong again. It sounds like a very romantic moment though.

I was at Lake Placid the year Rain Forest was killed. I always HATED that show. Bad things always happened there.

Radio Talk - Maryann is still riding - she’s now Maryann Charles. She’s in Southern Pines, NC and still gallops to the jumps better than anyone!

Edited for spelling…

Somehow I have missed about 10 pages here, which I will have to go back and catch up on. But, quickly reading the last 2, there are 2 questions I know the answers to:

Supernatural (Josh) was Stephanie Currey’s junior hunter (or was it Frances?). He was a doll, not mean at all. He was a little quarter horse who was a freak of nature in how he moved and jumped. He was almost too stylized and some judges loved him, but some just wouldn’t use him because he didn’t move/jump like all the other horses.

Brooke Hodgson bought Spindletop Scotch, renamed Scotch Tweed, in 1967. I remember this distinctly because their first show together was the 2 day show at Ethel Walkers. Victor had brought my young horse back up after tuning him for me (and I couldn’t ride him at all once he was made rideable ) when he brought Scotch Tweed up.

The day before the show, VHV turned ST out in the indoor ring. It is a large ring and has huge doors (about 5’ high) which close with an opening of about 4’ over them.

ST ran around bucking for a bit and then headed straight for the doors. He jumped out over the 5’ doors without decapitating himself on the top of the door frame.

It was one of the few times I have ever seen VHV at a loss for words. IIRC, he was actually shaking when he retrieved the horse.

This might be an interesting survey ~~~

Let’s see how many of us, sitting at the computer in 2006, signed on to COTH, were on the same showgrounds over 25 years ago without knowing each other.

If you were at the Lake Placid Show when Rain Forest died, raise your hand.

[hand waving in air] I was – I heard about it as soon as I came onto the showgrounds the morning after it happened.

Wasn’t Don a breeding manager at one of the larger TB breeding farms in KY?

Must be a different horse, this one was a brilliant chestnut, he shined like gold. He was definitely a hunter though. This was during the mid to late 1960’s.

Anyone remeber a little horse named Dugan, he did everything back in the day. This was like in the early 70’s . He did Workings and everything else before that on his way up. Carol Tate(Rhan) rode him.

That is NOT Mary Mairs and Tomboy. Don’t know who though.

Do any of you hunter gurus remember Last Murmur - chestnut mare, ridden by Don Stewart. I think owned by the Curreys. She was shown around the late 70’s, early eighties.

Buryinghill2, it is nice to hear that Spanky is still alive. He must be in his 20s, because my mare was a few years older than him, and she is almost 29. I rode with Nancy back then, so I got to see lots of Spanky when he was home. I really liked his full sister, Maysie (“Goodbye Blues”) but am not sure whatever became of her. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I saw pictures of Spanky about a year ago. Don’t worry about him, he’s getting the best of care and living the good life!

God, did I love Nightlife!

Trivia question: What did RuthAnn do that made her stand out in the equitation division?
