Well, I wasn’t complaining about her selection. I think it was incredible that she went on. I don’t follow SJ like I do eventing. But there is a raging debate about who should be on team and pressure from old bulls yada yada yada. I was just commenting on something I found ironic
But Larksmom she’s not inexperienced. She’s ridden at World Cup Finals, Nations cup Finals, Won the Youngster Cup, youngest rider to win a GCT Grand Prix ever, just finished 6th at Aachen in the million dollar grand prix. I’m not sure how to quantify it to Eventing, but it has to be the equivalent of some good 3* and 4* placings at least.
Yup. Not a newbie at all, at this point. And every rider has a first WEG or Olympic team.

That is what I saw too. Especially on the slo-mo replay. It surprised me because it was a related (countable) distance from the prior fence and no one else crashed through the wall due to the horse being on a 1/2 stride. Yes, there were refusals and blocks down, but, from the rounds I saw (all of section 2), everyone else got there on an even count (9?). It looked like she just lost count.
At that point, I was thinking that her nerves got to her – with her inexperience and all. Maybe it was what she needed to regroup and focus instead of being overwhelmed. But I found myself regretting that Charlie was not riding today.
Lest anyone think I am dissing Lucy, I am not. I think, for her age and experience, she is an incredible rider. But, WEG is not the time or place for riders with so little experience to be on the team. Waiting in the wings were Margie (out with collarbone), Charlie Jayne and Chill RZ, Lauren Hough with Oohlala (sp?) and another experienced rider I cannot remember.
That is my opinion. Yours may vary :)
Compare the number of European shows Lucy has done in the last 3 years to Charlie. I do not see why you call Lucy inexperienced. Since you have a hard time finding things on a computer, I’ll make it easy for you and link their FEI records.

I think that regardless of whether Barron was spooky or Lucy missed, what’s more impressive is the fact that she delivered a clear round afterword. We can’t develop young riders without giving them the opportunity to prove themselves, and I think she definitely showed that she’s capable.
You are right; although I did not see her round the fact that she went on to jump clear the rest of the way is impressive. Lucy earned her place on the team and although this is her first WEG she has the experience needed.
That’s not what I saw at all. I saw Barron take a hard look and look at the wall, as many others did, and Lucy reacted quickly to get him over the fence. The wall caused many problems, and a few horses decided not to jump between the flags.
ETA She was my pick for the team as well due to her experience at several World Cup Finals, Barcelona Nations Cup Finals, performance at Aachen, and just generally her experience being based in Europe.
Ohlala is a lovely horse but pretty much took her self out of the running at observation events, Charlie Jayne is great but if I was in the same spot as Robert I’d have taken Lucy too. I guess I just completely disagree on that jump haha.
Either way the American’s have a great team and I think they will all perform well tomorrow!
I agree. Barron took a hard look at the wall, it looked like he wasn’t going to jump it but Lucy reacted quickly enough to get him (sorta, more like through it) over it. I think she handled the situation very, very well!! She did a good job recovering and jumped the rest of the course beautifully and clear.
I thought Lucy handled the situation very well too. He kept going and she stayed on.
People always seem to ask where the link to order of go and live scoring is, so here’s a link to StreamHorseTV which has put both of those links on their WEG page. Yes, it’s a link to a link, but overall it was easier for me than navigating the WEG site to find it.
In her interview with Sara Lieser, Lucy said:
http://www.chronofhorse.com/article/france-leads-us-team-third-after-world-games-speed-leg
The interview is 1/2 down the page beginning in the paragraph that begins:
“US World Games rookie Lucy Davis…”
I am not promoting Charlie, nor am I diss’ing Lucy. But when the chips are down, because of her age and splitting her time between college and riding, I still believe that she is less likely to react with the automatic responses that a more seasoned rider would.
We can each define what “experience” means to us. You say it is classes in the show ring. I think it is hours and hours in the saddle.
Does anyone have any idea around what time Lucy Davis went? I’m searching through the video trying to find her and I must just be missing her because I can’t find her.

it was around 110th in the order
Thanks!
Bertram Allen is amazing, especially for such a young rider! Molly Malone is amazing too.
Lucy Davis reacted to a tough situation exactly the way you would want your team member to react. With ice water in her veins and acting for the greater good. Remarkable for a woman that young. She is a winner. Not to mention her horse is the real deal. I think an inspired choice by Robert to represent. I expect her performance to only move up the list in the next few days.
Mclain and Yann both clear! Rothchild and Showgirl both were miles over all the fences and jumped great
So after the first rotation
Canada, USA, and Netherlands clear
Germany, France uncharacteristic 4 faults
Pieter Devos and his horse fell at the last fence
GBR 12 faults
and Ireland 4 faults for Darragh Kenny
Kent a rail coming out of the last combination, Lucy a cheap brick off the wall for 4 as well
Tiffany had a foot in the water and a cheap rail at a vertical, Ian had an unfortunate back rail of an oxer.
It’s not over yet, is it?
I got up at 2:30 to watch the first group. All the US’ers rode great. Fingers crossed for Beezie this afternoon so we end on a score of 4. But it seems like all countries are having rails, so we will still be in the hunt.
I don’t like that only the top 5 teams will qualify for Rio. No matter who qualifies, other very good countries will be left out.
Are there fewer countries being allowed at the Olympics this time or has it always been this hard to qualify?

and in an interview he said this is his first championship show. His Mare looks like a sweet , happy type horse. She just bounced around and left the arena on the buckle.
He looks like a stiff wind would knock him over. So young so slim.

It’s always been that way. 4 years ago we missed the cut to qualify for London and had to send a top team to Mexico for Pan Ams so that we could go to London. The Olympics are the top of the sport, it should be very hard to qualify! I’m pretty sure that the top 5 teams qualify for all Olympic disciplines at the WEG.
Am I correct in thinking that the teams get to drop whichever score is worst (the drop score) each day? In other words, if rider A’s score is dropped on day one and rider B has the worst score on day 2, rider B’s score will be dropped on day 2?
