Socks--in or out?

I always thought socks out was just a relic of the pre-zipper days. And I agree they would stretch out faster if you wear them over your breeches. My calves are kind of big so my socks get stretched out anyway. I don’t want to hasten the process!

Out! I only put socks on just before boots. I like dry slippery socks that don’t stink up my boots or stick to them when im putting them on.I also baby powder inside of boots, a dry boot is a long lived boot!

We were just talking about boots of old…how did we ever pull boots on? I stopped the tall sock once I had zippers in my boots.

Seriously… I thought I was the only one that did this. It wasn’t until recently that I learned normal height people’s breeches don’t go to their ankles… My breeches go over half my foot if I don’t pull them up to bunch at the ankle, my socks are always in because I would have horrible wrinkling of breeches under the socks if I didn’t do it that way.

I wear my socks under for the same reasons as mentioned by some others above - I dislike the feel of the breeches against my skin. All boots are zip up so that’s not an issue. Unless I get breeches on before socks, then they go over because I’m lazy.

I wear them out. I have indulged in the Zocks boot socks, and having them outside the breeches makes it much easier to get my half chaps on. I haven’t worn actual dress boots in a long time, but they were pull ons, not zippers, and I always wore boot socks or knee highs on the outside because the boots slid on easier. I guess that’s why I never thought about wearing them in?

Lord Helpus, I had those breeches with the button flap in front, and I also had a bunch with the tiny button on the outside of the calf. When I started riding, I had all my mother’s and sister’s handmedowns, and that’s what they had. I also had a tattersall ratcatcher shirt, with what was called a “self tie.” Instead of a choker, you had a matching piece of fabric that tied in a bow at your neck.

Out, to smooth out the breech lines from the velcro, and because it’s just my habit.

Under/inside my breeches 99.9% of the time. I abhor the feeling of my breeches on my ankle tightened by the sock. It isn’t that my breeches aren’t nice, I just never wear any pant under a sock and it drives me bonkers. It just doesn’t feel right. However, my new pair of tall boots is a b**** to zipper up and I found that if I wear my super thin boot sock over my breeches it makes it easier. So, until they are stretched out for a sock to go under my breeches I sadly have to deal with breeches touching my bare leg.

half the time I’m unmatched and crew length so neither. . .

The ones i have that have velcro instead of sock bottoms I wear under because velcro itches like crazy.

In. It’s always seemed a bit less bulky when you’re zipping on your half chaps.

Oh my gosh, I love this thread. I never knew people wore their socks “in” - I’m so sheltered!

CPL713 - that is exactly what I was just about to post!

I can’t imagine wearing them inside! I don’t wear socks at all except because I need them under my boots. But I wear them out so they will hold down the velcro part and keep it smooth to facilitate getting into the boots. Yes I do have zippers, but I still have to get my heel past the ankle part…

For crazy socks they are out. I wear compression socks and those are in. Everything gets caught in the zipper, doesn’t matter where the socks are.

Wow. I’ve been making fun of my husband for years since I think he’s weird for wearing his socks under his breeches. He’s the only person I’ve ever known to do it. Now, seeing all of these posts I’m wondering if I should give it a shot?!
Nah, I’ll stick with my crew socks pulled over my breeches, I only wear the no velcro on the bottom breeches so gone are the days of an indented velcro mark on my ankle for an hour after removing my breeches.

Socks in…I’m not a fan of the crazy sock thing…although looks cute on little girls.

In! Otherwise I tend to get scratched by the Velcro and I am short - out would make me look even shorter

This! I figure it doesn’t really matter to me so what ever requires the least effort.

Normally I wear ankle socks, but if I wear taller socks always under my breeches. Like I would with any other pants!! Don’t get the whole socks out thing.

I’ll play.
Knee socks out.
My breeches rarely are long enough, so socks need to be out.
And I’m only 5’-5". These breeches must be like shorts on the tall ladies.

This should have been a POLL so we actually knew percentage in and out. I’m an INNSY person myself - I don’t wear my socks outside my pants, so why would I wear them outside my breeches? Back in the days of velcro, I wanted the socks to protect my legs from the velcro. Now, most of the breeches have a “sock leg” anyway - so why stretch out my socks over the breeches?

I would guess it is about 50/50 based on what I see at shows and clinics?
