TB Broodmare bloodlines that we like
Penny- I need a “like” button. Very well said!
I just clicked the like button too Penny.
It’s been one of the goals of my breeding program and I’m sure yours as well, to try to keep those precious TB lines alive.

I will third the like button! It is a shame that so many have jumped on to the WB plan and let go of the most athletic horse, the Thoroughbred!

Several nice TB stallions stand on the East Coast to hunter mares. One that comes to mind is Fun and Fancy Free. There is also Nob Hill who is 3/4 TB.

I have two mares, who are line bred Somethingroyal, through Secretariat and Sir Gaylord. They are producing gorgeous foals. I am looking forward to a pure TB foal one of these days too.

Interesting…I hadn’t seen another with Mr. Redoy in their pedigree (is in Adversary Miss). He’s the dam sire of three of my horses including my TB broodmare. Her pedigree is here:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/charm18

I’ve never been able to find out much about him. But all of horses (especially my gelding) are similar in body type to him based on that one picture in pedigree query. All can run and jump…

You can still find lots of Hyperion lines relatively close in Australia through Star Kingdom and in Europe through Owen Tudor and Aureole and many other Hyperion sire lines. Blandford is everywhere. In the US, primarily through Nasrullah and mares. You can still find Nasrullah close up here and he is a line that is seems to be essential to US sport TBs. He’s almost gone as a sire line, though. Hyperion is golden for movement.

As to Mr. Redoy, he’s Gray Dawn (excellent) and Pocket Ruler (excellent). Nirgal is also excellent. The rest of the lines in the third generation and back of Adversary Miss have all proved themselves with sport horse descendants.

The problem with TBs being limited these days to track bred horses is that the lines that were so prolific in sport are farther and farther back, with the horses selected to bred that are commercially (sales) attractive to racing. The turfy, stamina lines are few and far between in the US. But Europe, Australia and New Zealand have them in spades. South America, Eastern Europe and South Africa have traditionally had interesting lines for sport, but shuttling is beginning to limit their preservation potential.

Danzig is certainly a well proved “modern” sport line, at least for eventing, although he comes with the possibility of unsoundness. There is a lot more Danzig available in the rest of the world than here, thanks to shuttling.

It is discouraging to look for the right combination of lines in a pedigree at this point. However, they are out there, more than you might think. I’ve gotten sales catalogs from various venues over the years and recently, particularly the mixed sales, where the broodies primarily sell. If you go through them, you might be surprised at some gems that are in that. Many times, those mares won’t be the ones being bid on so much since they won’t be the commercial/popular lines. Devils Bag/Devil His Due come to mind as a line I like that can be found combined with some other sport lines, they can be productive for sport. I love their type. There are usually a few imported mares with lines that alot of people here don’t care about or recognize. Every now and then you see an Easy Goer or Alysheba go through, some Caro lines, etc. I love the sales, it’s a candy store for the Thoroughbred lover! Bought a very nice Key to the Kingdom/Vertex mare some years back at Ocala who was a nice one and a Jacinton/Carrier Pigeon that just wouldn’t get in foal unfortunately. I bought my Jig Time/Noor mare in Ocala, though privately. You see some Alleged lines go through – and so forth.

Better than that, Adversary Miss was herself an excellent sport horse (a very talented scopey jumper and good mover, with a very generous temperment) and Mighty Adversary is sire of the 4* horse Hollywood. Hollywood’s not fancy but he has proven durable.

In case anyone is interested, Hollywood (Kelly Sult’s 4* horse) is a 1993 model with the registered name of Mighty Reckless. No wonder it was changed! I found him through the FEI Search.

That’s really good to know. My three are all sport horses too–and I would describe them the same way–well maybe not the generous part. Mine are moe of a pro ride–not crazy but they don’t suffer fools for long ;). Two have gone prelim so far. My broodmare with me in her first year competing as a 6 year old…but my skills have held her back. She is the oldest and only a 2000 model. Her foals look very fancy so far. After a few babies, I may compete her some more. Other two are still competing. One looks to be the real deal if he stops hurting himself but he is still young…he was Izzy’s last foal and she must have been one of the last crops for Mr. Redoy.

On the “new” (er) guys front, I don’t know much about some of the lines in this stallion:
http://www.pedigreequery.com/toccet
Toccet, but he does have Blushing Groom, Cozenne/Caro, and Prince John/Princequillo (of course) and while its not a lot, I’ve seen two mares by him who were both nice. fwiw.

Very interesting thread! I don’t know a ton about TB lines and some of the ones mentioned I see in both my broodmare and my gelding.

My mare is by Alybro http://www.pedigreequery.com/barnhartvale+belle
My gelding is by Devil His Due http://www.pedigreequery.com/malo+chico

Not knowing TB lines, I bought them simply because I liked something about them… in the mare’s case another breeder highly recommended I buy her when she found out I was close to her! (I’m greatful I snapped her up… she is a doll)

The gelding is an incredible mover with an outstanding temperament… pretty to boot.

Although not mine I’d give my key to the mint for a mare bred like this

They must be out there because this guy is on Canter, and he has a wonderful pedigree for sport.

Key Bridge, the dam of Key to The Mint, is definitely a wonderful broodline line to find.

This is the pedigree of some my favourite mares

There’s another “newer” stallion, Precocity,
http://www.pedigreequery.com/precocity2
who I think is a great looking horse with a nice pedigree. I’d love to see some of his offspring, but he stands in NM and I just haven’t had a chance to see any. They either aren’t making their way to KY/IN/OH or they are running well enough that they aren’t getting sold through the venues where I would see one. But if anyone has seen any or does in the future, I’d like to know how they are turning out.

Any idea where she is or are you keeping her all to yourself. ;)

Nope I certainly wish I knew I’d be in her yard begging her owner for a custom filly or the mare herself !!

The mare I do have is

http://www.pedigreequery.com/seneca+falls

I love her although more purpose bred for racing. While refined to look at she is a power house mover tons of push from behind and finishes very light and pretty in front. Excited to breed her this year.

It’s a dream, not likely for me to do, but I’d love to preserve the Thoroughbred in sport. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a farm standing Thoroughbred stallions for sport like so many of the wb’s have and a band of Thoroughbred mares to keep the 100% Thoroughbreds in sport…That would be a good way we can prove the validity and continuing need for the Thoroughbred in the sport disciplines. They still have the ability and heart just a diminished interest from the masses which is a great shame!

This is one of the things we are trying to do, albeit on a small scale. We are still learning the best lines for sport, but we have some nice, hardy (as in raced many a year and retired sound) mares that have crossed well with our stallion.

I love threads like this as it helps when looking at possible future broodmare prospects. We still have a lot to learn.

These are the newest mares in our broodmare band:

Nice mare pedigrees, Foxhaven. I saw Dispersal run and met Graustark – one of my all time favorites. Loves Saint Ballado and you are soooo lucky to have a mare with Santa Claus in the damline! Good luck!

Sandpit (BRZ) died in 2004 or thereabouts. He’s got a wonderful pedigree for sport, so some of his daughters ought to still be out there. They tend to have many, many starts. I seriously doubt if he left any intact sons to breed on.

Chestnut sabino with bling.

Reading this thread again and again has only strengthened my resolve to fine the THOROUGHBRED MARE for my Stravinsky (aka Trachit) semen… LOL!!!

Anybody want to donate a uterus attached to an awesome sport bred and sport performing mare??? Hehehe…

I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to have some of his blood lines in TB form in the US???
