The Big NYC Carriage Thread/UPDATES posts #41-51 NEW/EQUUS/Fran Jurga #67

Ok- this is a MUST LISTEN.

There is a driving related podcast called the Driving Radio Show.
It’s one of many shows on the Horse Radio Network…

So if you aren’t familiar with the Horse radio network- check it out because they probably have a show for the discipline you love. You can listen online- or get the ap for your phone (FREE) and download to listen on the go- I’m sure you will enjoy the easy to use system.

This most recent edition has an interview with Eva and it’s just amazing to hear her explain the situation in depth- they give her a lot of time. The NYC part begins about half way into the show.

Great interview…Eva starts talking about 00:40:00…she does a great job.

I just had a discouraging FB interaction with a couple of people heavily involved in the TB industry. They are against NYC carriage horses, believing “horses don’t belong in NYC.” They also believe that racing isn’t at risk because it’s “a billion dollar industry employing thousands of people.” Ugh, do they not understand that RARAs would love to get rid of racing, which certainly has a higher fatality and serious injury rate than just about any other equine activity? Wake up, people! This issue isn’t just about the NYC carriage industry. It’s about the slippery slope that bans or limits all sorts of horse sports.[/QUOTE]

Do you have stats to support the claim that racing has a “higher fatality and serious injury rate than just about any other equine activity”? I would love to see them, as these claims are often made but I have not been able to verify them. Thank you in advance!

According to the NYT, it’s 24 horses per week dying at racetracks. That’s 1,248 annually. It’s hard to compare to other equine activities, because such records aren’t kept. I suspect that, as a percentage of competitors, eventers might have the highest equine death rate. However, that is speculation on my part, since there appear to be so many deaths in a relatively small sport. I remember that in the first three years of the Jersey Fresh, for example, at least one horse died during the competition. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/us/death-and-disarray-at-americas-racetracks.html

Well, the media has finally EXPLODED on our behalf!

After years of begging for coverage of the facts-behind-the-scenes, we now have more than we can handle, and we are not complaining!

Because this is COTH, I will lead off with a relatively minor one, only because it is from an equestrian column. Wonderful support, much appreciated:

Other publications and media outlets who have covered us FAVORABLY this week include The American Spectator, The Daily Beast, Politico, Front Page Magazine, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Alan Rosenthal, editor of the New York Times, Teamster Nation, The Irish Voice, WABC, WNBC, WPIX, WCBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and Hannity.

I am sure I am leaving some out! Note the wide range of supporters and inquiries from across the political spectrum - we have achieved a “big tent” and we are damned proud of that!! How many topics have the Teamsters and Rush Limbaugh agreeing and quoting each other??

If anyone wants links, let me know, I will get them all together and post them…but if you are interested in any specific publication’s take, you can just Google the name of the outlet with the word “carriages.”

But I do want to share this awesome segment from WPIX, one of our local stations here. It is an interview with Christina Hansen (COTH name: thedrafthorse) from inside one of our stables, and she totally NAILS the political intrigue: http://video.pix11.com/Big-real-estate-donor-REAL-reason-de-Blasio-wants-to-ban-horsedrawn-carriages-report-25508042#.Us8p_PahuO6

More updates as they become available!

Please don’t forget to share our website: http://www.savenychorsecarriages.com/

 Armageddon!

The gal that you worked with that had to rewrite her story, is she in the fray as well?
She can now tell her editor “I TOLD YOU SO!!!”

michaleenflynn,

I lived in NYC for years and attended Clip Clop with my Mom. What an amazing program. I entirely support what you do and will be sending letters to every one of the city council members urging them to support you in lieu of the mayor. Keep up your amazing work!!!

Excellent, excellent work! I am so glad to see so many people are interested in keeping the carriages. I will share the links with non horsey friends, as this has become a topic of conversation outside the equestrian community.

Also Eva, please check you PM’s. I will be in the city this weekend.

Here’s links to additional recent coverage…

Westminster Dog Show Participants invited to Carriage Barn Open house

Just saw a link on the Carriage Driving List that you’ve invited the Westminster people to come tour the carriage barns during the show days - GREAT idea.

The more people who see the reality… the harder it will be to buy the poor suffering horse story.

Forgot to mention. One of your NJ supporters has been using the following as a comeback on whether the horses are cared for. Sounds like a good phrase for a talking point to me.

The working horses have a health plan including dental, they get new shoes every ?? weeks and they get at least 5 weeks vacation in the country. How many working PEOPLE can say that?

Update - Liam Neeson in the NY Post and Sean Hannity tonight!

Our old friend and supporter Liam Neeson has entered the fray again on our behalf! http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2014/01/10/liam-neeson-calls-proposed-nyc-horse-drawn-carriage-ban-criminal/

Also, Sean Hannity will be doing a segment on us at 10:50pm EST tonight!

don’t put yourself out now!

I found a few more articles/blogs from this past week:

Hannity & MSNBC come out on the same side of something - isn’t that in Revelations somewhere?

Great job guys!

Well, this did happen this week:
http://www.kptv.com/story/24399964/hell-michigan-freezes-over

I was just watching some vidos on the NYCLASS site, the Lea Michele for PETA was practically a comedy! Most stables I know are fully of “highly flammable hay” and “would be death traps if they ever caught fire”.

I also loved the paint who was very obviously caught in his harness, not “down out of shock”.

What total BS!

Ps I’m having trouble with your site on my android.

Nevermind, working it just took a moment!

I do have a question tho, if the stables are privately owned, how is De Blasio going to sell them to real estate developers? Eminent domain?

Just found the NY Times article questioning de Blasio’s judgement to have elimination of carriages on his agenda

http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/31/deblasios-first-move-carriage-horses/

Contact info for Sean Hannity regarding his program tonight on De Blasio and the carriage industry: http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/hannity/index.html. Look in the right hand sidebar.

While Hannity can be brutal, maybe you should also get Bill O’Reilly on to it.

Update: Hannity segment on tonight at 10:20pm EST, not 10:50!
