That “led to believe” excuse was used a couple of years ago, and the trainers/riders got away with it… UNFORTUNATELY…

Be careful arnika, I think you are revealing your ignorance
Batgirl, that indicates that the suspension is indefinite. Like BW, his has the effective date, but no ending date, because currently there IS no ending date to his suspension. And I don’t think there ever SHOULD be. JMO.

A few months ago there was a thread on Paul Valliere… I don’t think he is suspended for life, I think he is up for ? in 4 years.

Unfortunately, I think this is one of the only “the customer is always wrong” businesses - at least one of the long=lasting ones - horse-trading essentially. Ultimately, our horses our in our guardianship and we have to speak for them because no one else will, even if we catch hell for it.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’ll acquiesse to a trainer (and care team incl. but not limited to vet, farrier, chiropractor, etc.) I respect regarding 95% of things, but if it’s breaking the rules, I will not back down. Or if I truly think it is not in the horse’s best interest and someone else is putting his or her interests before my horses, I would not back down.
I know I’m different than the upscale horse show world. And, maybe in a different world of six-figure horses, I might not be different. God knows I’d hope I’d be the same as now

Excuse me for stripping out the more entertaining and creative aspects of DMK’s proposal. But legalizing ace was the jist of it.
“Back in the day” ace wasn’t forbidden - nor was bute, but that’s about all you had in your medicine chest along with some Dipyrone (sp?) for colic.
I’ve heard more than one professional, vet, and rider utter under their breath that a little legal ace would be the perfect answer.
So DMK your idea isn’t half-baked at all. Some would say it is a commen sense solution.
Ah, sorry oak . I’ve honestly never been to a one day show, and as far as I can remember all the shows I’ve been to recently have complied well with that rule. I just wasn’t sure what point you were addressing by bringing up the issue, so I thought I’d ask for some clarification.
Dana, it has been said that there was a feed mix-up and that Roller Coaster was given Oh Star’s feed bucket. Oh Star has been retired dut to soundness issues and has been given theraputic drugs. THAT is what was said on this and the other thread.

Since the rules of suspension forbid a suspended person from being on the show grounds, the trainer in question was not violating the rules. And to be fair it is hard to see a way to toughen up that requirement in such a way that will stop the suspended trainer from doing the proxy training method. It’s not like they can limit the person’s access to the airwaves or public grounds.
Probably the only thing to do is find other ways of hitting the pocketbook. Bigger fines, or something…

I also heard from some “other” discipline folks that they have stopped feeding their horses peppermints until their classes are completed. Apparently in their world, word on the street is that peppermints test.
ESG,
Yup it really happened. Quite probably not the norm, but it did happen.

C. Boylen,
Totally random question (and perhaps it will divert this thread for an instance) but what kind of professional do you plan on becoming?? A rider? A trainer? Just curious . . .

Betty, I would like to be the kind of professional that has clients like the ones on this board, instead of the ones I’m surrounded by, who have to be prevented from giving their horses chocolate and soda
Seriously, and I apologize for not answering while I was attempting to get points across that had been lost in cut and paste and reading comprehension, I would like to be a trainer. I’m not sure I would ever feel comfortable with the pressure of riding other people’s horses, but I enjoy teaching. It’s something I’ll do when I’m done with whatever it is I’m going to accomplish
You can’t have both banamine and bute in the system - it would appear as 2 NSAIDS (illegal except when ketaprofin is the 2nd NSAID). And even though the theraputic effect of the banamine would have long worn off, there might still be traces of banamine in the system. You can’t be too careful!
For h/j shows you can give 2 grams every 24 hours, but no sooner than 12 hours from competition, or you can give 1 gram every 12 hours. In either event, you cannot give it for more than 5 consecutive days (based on a 1000 lb animal). No D&M report needs to be filed. Also, if you use powder bute, and you have a horse awfully darn close to 1000 pounds, make darn sure you “fluff” up the powder before measuring - it tends to settle, and you might give more than the recommended dosage. (This explains why I still use good old tablets for horse shows!)

Friends don’t let friends ride junk!
What is the main drug responsible for getting all these people suspended, do we have any idea? I was following this thread and I didn’t look at it for 12 hours and it exploded. I was trying to go back through and look for the name of the drug and it’s effects, but it’s taking too long.
No it would NOT “tick off the druggers” it would tick off those of us who dont need to pay the captive audience prices that the show vets charge for simple proceedures that we can do ourselves! The drugs are legal and allowed so please dont find a way to charge me YET MORE $$ to be at a horse show. You cannot legislate moral behavior no matter how much time and $$ you throw at it! Cheaters will always cheat and the rest of us dont need to pay for it through the nose.

Oh, I doubt that excuse, too! I just wondered if there were any way to prove whether or not it’s true in a particular case, under current rules. Given how often it’s probably used.
Nigel is now in a thick aluminum shoe that has an undercut angle in it. I don’t what you call it. It’s kind of like a bevaled edge. He seems to be very happy in them. Does anyone know of these shoes?
