Tori Colvin annouced retirement of Way Cool, Inclusive, Canadian Blue, and Ovation
He did just fine with this junior rider
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P3G9uSdDm4
In that class, he won one class and DNP in 3 with Schaeffer.

Who knows why they are being retired, I don’t think it is a bad thing regardless. One thing is for sure, those four horses (well, Ovation may be an exception) are not easy rides. We saw a lot of misbehavior this indoor season, a lot more than in years passed it seems. Maybe Tori’s magic touch hasn’t been the trick all along, maybe it was her mother’s magic touch that worked the miracles. I am happy to see this chapter in those horse’s, and Tori’s, lives end.

I hope Tori focuses on FEI classes and I hope Betsee buys her a few jumpers to replace those hunters.

Truth. They are actually coming to my place so I have a nice trail horse or two.

Well, if they change their mind and decide to not send them to DMK for trail riding…

It would be cool to see a retirement ceremony at some big show. They’ve been fun to watch through the years.
Did some digging - it’s GR812:

"GR812 Retirement Ceremony

 1. If a retirement ceremony is allowed at the request of the owner of a horse, that horse may not be permitted to compete at the competition."
Off topic, but I wonder if that’s a relatively new rule. I seem to recall a pony a few years back (maybe Newsworthy?) showing at Harrisburg, then having a retirement ceremony there after his classes were finished. IIRC, he got nice ribbons there, so it was obvious he was a contender right to the end of his career. I believe they had a huge collection of kids at the ceremony who had ridden him over the years.

If you get the full set, maybe a few of us could come by periodically for group trail rides?

be careful. I hear they’re murderous monsters without extreme amounts of drugs…

We can cross that bridge when we come to it. Or stream, or bog, or what have you.

I’ve actually wondered myself if the performance was off on all of the horses as this was the first year I’ve been so focused on the consistency. Looking through USEF records, it seems like for most of these horses, there was at least one indoor show a season where results weren’t stellar throughout the years, so I wonder if the “these horses are always perfect” perception is because at the end of the day if we just focused on the highlights, this year as has become commonplace, she was grand junior champion at every single indoor, won almost every Junior hunter older championship, was best child rider at each show (or the equivalent at NHS) and won almost every high score award. It’s hard for me to know if the performance has changed or my perception because it’s now under such scrutiny. Someone else who’s done a more in depth look can correct me though. At the outdoor shows, the consistency seems to have always been higher (and note that the connections knew about the drug infraction before it was made public, so before Devon and Jr. Hunter Finals this year, and I’m sure adjusted the prep routine accordingly back then.) Indoors are weird - the lovely Papyrus horse was grand large at NHS but walked into the ring for Maclay finals and literally lost its mind. (The girl rode excellently to get him around - it was very impressive.)

What I think is most interesting is that COTH didn’t do an online article, or pictures, about the Junior hunters at NHS this year… Wonder if that has anything to do with the facebook backlash at any Tori-related post.

On the Betsee buying Tori jumpers - Betsee hasn’t shown much interest so far; Tori’s jumpers have always come from other sources (mainly Karen Long Dwight.)

The part about not being able to compete at the show you retire at may be new; but I remember the part about never being able to show (except leadline, etc) post retirement from my junior years, which were in the late 80s and early 90s.

Agreed, I would be surprised if Betsee started funding jumpers for her. She is very hunter-focused (plus those 4 amazing eq horses) and is supportive of the hunter divisions- nothing wrong with that! I’d just be surprised if she started buying up jumpers.

The USEF record shows him with Robert Collucio at WEF in 2011, which is consistent with Betsee’s stated plan (see here http://www.equisearch.com/article/devon_horse_show_060410). Apparently things didn’t work out for Rob.
I believe this is the Devon where this happened:

I am so glad that the vast majority of my showing career was pre-Youtube.

Yes,the USEF record shows that Robert Coluccio rode him at one show in 2011. Scott Stewart was the pro rider for the show previous to that one, and also after that, both in 2011. So there is still no evidence to suggest that even one trainer other than Scott Stewart had the horse for any length of time, let alone that the horse was passed through several trainers, none of whom could handle him.

Yes, the latter part of the rule has been the case for quite a while.

Not true.
They are coming to my place to learn to drive.
They will be the Perfect Prep Four-Horse Hitch:
Ovation, Way Cool, Canadian Blue, Inclusive
I wonder if they’re doing retirement ceremonies for each? My understanding is that you can always just announce that a horse is retired, and then unretire him/her later. But if you have an official retirement ceremony at a rated horse show, then the horse cannot be shown ever again at a rated show.
I dunno about that. Dialogue L (think that was its name) had a rather fancy retirement from the Junior Hunters at Indoors one year. Much fanfare, lots of pictures of the ceremony in COTH.

Several years later, the last year I showed in the 50+ Adults, I was soundly beaten by Dialogue L and Bruce D. Several times.

So, it must not be etched in stone, be all, end all permanent. Or the C rated Adults don’t count as rated? Whatever, we may see some of these again down the road.

You know not everyone is involved in the hunter/jumper world behind the scenes. It seems logical to me to think that horses of that caliber would be used by others even if not shown.

It’s got nothing to do with being ‘out of touch’. You don’t know what you don’t know.

Yet people continue to talk about topics they know nothing about as if it is fact.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that someone broke a rule that they weren’t aware of or didn’t quite understand (see, e.g. the amateur rules).
