The track was definitely sealed and sloppy this morning for sure.
I would be hoping that all horses in the Derby are getting the same level of scrutiny by the track vets regardless of their ML odds.
I think he looks short behind in the canter video but he could just be a short moving horse
Finnick the Fierce has now been withdrawn from the Derby.
Bummer, I really liked his story.

I think withdrawing Finnick the Fierce was the correct call even if maybe not needed.
BH article did make it sound like it was a scratch on the connection side based on all the âconcernâ with the RF. Co-owner is a vet and said heâd always travel a bit funny. Plans are a diagnostic eval at Rood & Riddle.
I agree, I love the horses with a good âstoryâ and Finnick the Fierce is definitely one of those.

Late add from PR with a slight amount more detail⊠scratched âout of abundance of cautionâ. I t think the right thing. Co-owner who is field vet for Hagyard said Finnick the Fierce has always looked funny with the RF but going to have an independent exam (by R&R).

Iâm glad he was scratched. I have never seen him IRL, but the two video clips above made me concerned that he had an occult problem in high hind end (pelvis or sacrum). Iâm not a vet, that was strictly a gut feel, but I wasnât looking forward to seeing him run just in case.

One of his co-owners is a field vet for Hagyard-McGee (sp?). What we saw was 2 short video clips. His connections felt his movement was related to his impaired vision.
The scratch was an abundance of caution.

A lame-appearance as a result of an eye heâs been missing since his younger days? eh; I think that is a bit of a stretch. Lets be honest; if this was not the KY Derby, this horse wouldâve gone to the gate. I am happy he is scratched and being looked at but the reality is that no-one wants to be another Barbaro scenario on the biggest race-day of the year. He did look short behind but both photos were of a horse trotting and cantering under a lot of collection; he wasnât behind asked to move forward at all. Plus the track was sealed and wet and some horses move differently on such a surface. Hope he checks out fine and we see him in the preakness
With Guillermo scratched; I am liking NY Traffic a bit more with each passing hour. And boy can that horse MOVE :eek:

Why would they need caution if there was nothing wrong with the horse? I think there was at least a bit of concern or they would have fought tooth an nail to keep him in.
ETA: this article quotes them as saying he didnât train well and has a cough so not âhow he always goes.â Disappointing I am sure but definitely the right call.

100 years ago Man oâ War missed his chance at the Derby, but tomorrow his retirement groomâs great-grandson has a colt entered. I am thrilled, and I canât wait to see Necker Island run. What a centennial that will be!

Finnick the Fierce, the one-eyed fan favorite in tomorrowâs Kentucky Derby, has been withdrawn from the race out of an abundance of caution. Owner Dr. Arnaldo Monge, who is a field care veterinarian at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, said the gelding was on the radar for veterinary officials because of an unusual movement, which Monge attributes to the absence of the horseâs right eye.
Thank you WMW for those quotes. I posted a link with quotes from the trainer who said he didnât train well. BH is saying he has a hoof injury. Either way I donât think it was done to shut up the peanut gallery but regardless, glad it was done.
This absolutely. Whether it was the âabundance of cautionâ with the funky videos out on the internet with maybe suspect RF or some sort of hind issue or cough or fever or whatever, with such a highly visible race we donât need another Mongolian Groom.

So far it appears no defections.
I did just realize after watching NBCSNâs entire coverage yesterday on the Oaks card that one âbenefitâ of very limited spectators and âworkersâ that we werenât subjected to interviews with stars or goofy hats (I like the nice ones 
) or any of the other coverage that has me reaching for the remote to watch tVG between the single track races that NBC broadcasts.
Iâm still in Honor A. P.'s camp but also think that Tiz the Law will be a tough beat. While I donât think Necker Island can win, would love to see him (or Storm the Court) hit the board.
