Triple Crown 2020

King Guillermo not planning on the Belmont.

Baffert plans to run both Nadal and Charlatan in the Belmont.

Authentic will be running in the Santa Anita Derby instead of the Belmont.

Tiz the Law also targeting the Belmont.

This summer will be interesting…

Sole Volante heading for the Belmont.

As the Belmont starts to fill up, disappointed again it won’t be 1 1/2 miles… it will be probably the largest Belmont field in a few years as it’s an ‘early’ race and no TC on the line yet.

With a million dollar purse and a considerably shorter distance, it’s pretty much guaranteed to draw the biggest Belmont entry in a very long time.

I cringe every time someone calls it The Belmont. Guess that means I can call myself Miss America. Its not that different, right?

Right.

I didn’t call it “The Belmont”, I simply, or so I thought, dropped the word Stakes when referring to it and assumed, since we have called California Chrome CC and American Pharoah AP, that shorting names was acceptable…

Guess not, I’ll be sure to refer to the Belmont Stakes as such in the future.

I think you may be misinterpreting LaurieB and Halo.

It seems to me that they are mildly annoyed by the powers that be in racing, not you in particular, calling the upcoming race “The Belmont” when it really isn’t, since the distance has been changed.

I may turn out to be totally wrong, but I bet we dont see this race at a mile and 1/2 again…Are there even any other major stakes on dirt at 1.5 miles?

Thats what concerns me, too. I think it will be very easy for them to moderate the distance once this year is done.

Post-race samples from the AK Derby still haven’t cleared. The Louisville Journal is reporting that Bob Baffert had two horses test positive at Oaklawn. The Daily Racing Form has identified Charlatan as one of the positives.

The Paulick Report has the story but I can’t link it or this post won’t approved.

What drug were they positive for?

I’ll try to link to DRF. https://www.drf.com/news/charlatans-initial-test-comes-back-positive-after-arkansas-derby

This link should be approved

All I gotta say is

Nothing official can be confirmed due to confidentiality. No “official” confirmation until a written decision by the stewards.

Split sample test is being performed.

Based on an unnamed source, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Tuesday that two failed tests were from horses trained by Bob Baffert, including one of his top 3-year-olds. Baffert conditions Charlatan, and also won the second division of the Arkansas Derby with Nadal. He took an allowance race that day with Gamine as well. Those were the only three horses he raced at Oaklawn May 2.

Will be very interested in the split sample results.

What I’ve wanted to know for a few months is why anyone would name a racehorse Charlatan?

What gave me pause was that 2 horses that raced May 2 did not clear testing as confirmed by state steward at Oaklawn but not the horse names or connections.

The unnamed source (see #93 above) said that the two failed test were both from Baffert. Baffert had 3 horses that raced that day at Oaklawn; Chalatan, Nadal and Gamine.

Combined with the prohibited level of scopolamine in Justify when he won the 2018 Santa Anita Derby (to be fair, no action was taken as the CHRB attributed the lab’s finding for scopolamine as due to environmental contamination tied to jimsonweed.)

Unknown yet when the split-sample test can be returned, can be as soon as 5 days but with the COVID-19 conditions, could be longer. I suspect pressure if the split test confirms the result of the first test, there will be pressure on the hearing, testimony, lab/vet/people reports and the subsequent stewards ruling. KD points are on the line that could impact other horses depending on if Charlatan were to make, or not, the KD field.

Baffert is understandably not happy that this information has come out even though he hasn’t been explicitly named due to the confidentiality.

I have wondered the same thing. Considering the name, it will be ironic if his tests turn out to be positive.

I keep wanting to quote the Princess Bride to the owners. “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

I keep wondering why someone of Baffert’s level would be giving illicit things to horses? Particularly one as talented as Charlaton or Nadal? Or maybe the timing was just off? I guess it depends on what it is. But certainly the people inside racing are doing a grand job of muddying the public’s view of it as a sport.
