Triple Crown races 2024 - KY Derby (& Oaks) - Who's following?

He wasn’t bred in Venezuela. He was sold to Venezuela as a yearling.

My mistake, saw that info somewhere else and didn’t take time to verify it. And he is Canonero II, not *Canonero II, no asterisk as he was US-bred. Here’s more info on him:

So the answer is, two horses from Europe have won the Derby and every other horse that won was North American bred.

Where Mystic Dan got his name:

It’s a good line up. Lots of potential upsets; there is caliber in this group both from a jockey perspective as well as equine.

As both a betting person and a horse person, I’ll enjoy watching this race.

My thing is, in the era of “social license to operate,” we need to be sure ALL equestrian governing bodies are only putting forth the best horsemen (that encompasses owners, trainers, riders, barn owners, grooms, etc). There should be no room for publicity–let alone inclusion, but that’s another story–of anyone who blatantly disrespects the rules like Baffert has. It’s just a terrible look on all of us.

Looking like it’s going to be a wet one again.
While I dislike BB, I do feel bad for the horses connections.

Quote from the article:
“We are sick about this. The horse had been doing really well,” Baffert said. “But we have to do what’s right by the horse.”

Great that BB is now into horse welfare. /s

I don’t feel bad for the owners. They chose to do business with a skeezeball.

Birds of a feather, and all that…

Barn help, on the other hand.

I do too, but I would respect them more if they’d chosen another trainer.

Yep.

The barn help? All those drug addicts who keep contaminating the horses in their care and causing the blood tests to pop dirty? That barn help? /s

Sarcasm aside, a scratch might mean a missed opportunity for the backside workers employed by Baffert, depending on whether he stakes them after a win.

The defection of Muth from the race sure changes everything. Maybe we have a shot at a triple crown this year after all. Especially with the Belmont being 1 1/4 this year.

But how do we feel about that? ***Triple Crown?

I personally don’t care, it’s not like the horse’s connections were the one who decided the length of the race. Some people have already put a mental asterisk on the series due to Baffert being left out of the Derby, there is no pleasing everyone. I do think the TC in its current schedule is on the way out anyway. I expect a revamp in the next few years.

NBC Sports features an online article today purporting to tell us how to watch the Black-Eyed Susan and see the “poll” positions.

I find this year that I just don’t care about any of it. Except the horses. I do care about them.
