Triple Crown races 2024 - KY Derby (& Oaks) - Who's following?

WOW That goes back a LONG way! That was my first Derby, I would have been around 12. I believe it was Kaui King that won. Couldn’t tell ya who else ran that year. Or, what ever happened to Kaui King.

Sierra Leone definitely should have been taken down or at the very least placed behind Forever Young.
Not only was he coming over & smashing into FY repeatedly, but Gaffalione was pushing/.grabbing at FY as well.

Look at his hands, he is not grabbing but pushing against the neck as they make contact and he’s hauling on that outside rein trying to keep them apart. That’s some pretty serious “lugging in” there.

My understanding is unless a jockey formally objects the stewards rarely initiate a review. Even if they did, IMO, FY was not going to get in front of the winner. SL might have had he behaved.

Yes, I can see what you mean. I can’t see that arm pushing away as more than an attempt to separate the horses, however I am not, and have never been, a jockey so do not understand the nuances of what is riding for safety, and what is cheating. It seems a fine line.

Anyway the lugger and pusher placed over his rival.

I always like to read what everyone had to say about their trips after the race.

I think Tyler was trying his damnedest to prevent Sierra Leone from being taken down. The horse kept trying to come over on top of Forever Young and the pictures make it appear Tyler was doing everything in his power to prevent that. He’s hauling the horse to the outside and trying to push away to the outside.

My two cents.

Horses who lug in are just awful to ride

I wonder if Forever Young would have managed at least second instead of third if he hadn’t been working to stay straight and upright against Sierra Leone on his outside.

Exciting race! I came away thinking that Forever Young is a hell of horse.

Also it is just a matter of time for Japan. They have all the pieces in place.

Interesting to read that Hernandez (Mystic Dan) was watching Calvin Borels two inside rides because that’s exactly what I thought when I saw him push through on the rail.

Did anyone else notice how badly Larry Collmus blew the stretch call? Talk about late to the party.

I was looking in the Ribot generation. And yes, cousins do matter to my friends and me when we discuss the relationships among our horses. So don’t try to set policies for others just because something doesn’t matter to you. LOL

I would not be surprised to see Japan surpass us in the breeding and racing of dirt horses in the next decades. They have been taking the best of US racing and applying their own adaptations to it.

Yep, it was dejavue all over again. :joy:

He is trying to use his arm to prevent his mount from lugging into the other horse. That’s all. He is also trying like hell to keep SL straight.

Fun race to watch, finally did so this morning.

I was yelling at the screen.

Yep - he did the exact same thing that Tom Durkin did with Mine That Bird - suddenly mentioned him as he popped through on the rail and was pulling away… at least they recovered and called the final strides correctly…

I think the delay before making the race official was also because the stewards were evaluating the bumping between Sierra Leone and Forever Young from all angles. The win photo itself did not need microscopic perusal - a nose is a nose! Much more obvious than a flared nostril tip!

I had Forever Young and Catching Freedom…

Nice, relaxed interview with Mystic Dan’s trainer, Kenny McPeek, this morning. He says some lovely thing about Hernandez.
