UPDATE Page 10 (I know you're all waiting by your keyboards to respond!) (I jest.) (Kind of.) Barn worker taking things - what would your expectation be of the Barn regarding consequences?

Fellow COTHers of the inflammatory and not so inflammatory kind, I have an update!

  1. The VEST: I had a nice chat as a follow up with BO. I had explained to her what had happened but we hadn’t had a chance to catch up on next steps until over the weekend. BW’s side of the story was that the vest was left in the covered ring for 2 weeks with no claimants, so she took it. I find this plausible but not probable (if that makes any sense). I definitely lost the vest on that day, and I DID ride in the covered arena when I got bucked off. I remember taking the vest off before I rode the horse (at my trunk), but I will admit given the trauma of my injuries the entire morning is a bit fuzzy for me.

The two weeks after the fall, I rode very little, and when I did it was on a trail ride. I didn’t check the covered for my vest, as I had no reason to think it would be there. I did however ask a close friend who rides in the covered all the time, and she said that she had not seen my bright pink vest in there, and had she, she would have grabbed it. So the timing of when it was taken, and her excuse for doing so remains unknown.

That said, given we are in the time of COVID, there weren’t any public lessons or extra people at the barn. The fact still remains that even if she didn’t know it was mine, she had to know it was somebody’s and that she should have returned it to the lost and found. The BO stated that she too, is somewhat at a loss. The gloves are really not that big of a deal, but she was given guidance both by BO and by myself (with permission of BO) on the proper way to handle the situation in the future, which she then failed to do. Is it just poor judgement? Is it something more intentional? I don’t know, neither does BO. I absolutely feel empathy for trying to find a replacement BW, it is not easy to do for the roles and responsibilities BW has. Which by the way, I have never outlined but on which a lot of assumptions have been made.

For now my take away from our conversation is that, the BW is on notice, and will be watched more closely. The good news is that I felt no more or less valued by the BO than I have in the 4 years of mutual respect I have enjoyed as a client, or the previous 22ish years I have known her as an acquaintance and a friend.

  1. The MARTINGALE: On the day that the vest reappeared on the BW’s body, I told her that I was missing a stick and a martingale as well, and if she had either, please return it. This morning when I arrived at the barn, my missing martingale (since February) was back on the hook from which it was lifted! Was it the BW who had an epiphany? Was it someone else who realized they accidentally mixed it in with their tack? I will never know, but I am glad that it’s back safe and sound.

  2. The STICK: I found the stick today down at the ring on the table where people put their drinks. I haven’t mentioned this because I didn’t want to come off as defensive, but the stick actually was labeled with one of those monogram stickers. So I know it’s mine. The stick was laying with someone else’s spurs. I can safely assume someone had a wild horse and dropped the stick and the spurs while riding. Newsflash! I didn’t take the spurs as mine, but left them there in hopes that the owner will return for them. If they’re still there by the end of the week, I will put them in the lost and fond.

All in all here is what I have learned:

  1. I need to do a better job putting my stuff up, but I’m human. I’m thoroughly impressed by those that have never left anything out in their life, that’s definitely not me.
  2. I am really hated by a lot of people for reasons unknown to me. I have always had a so-called “strong personality” but that is part of what makes me, me.
  3. Even though I repeated over and over that I was looking for feedback, not trashing BO decision or lack thereof, some people can’t wrap their head around it. I wasn’t looking to stir the pot, actually quite the opposite. I was hoping to understand what (if any) consequences might someone expect in this situation. It has run the gambit of I’m the worst client ever for leaving my gloves out, to that BW should be fired on the spot. The reality is probably somewhere in between. I don’t think it’s a fire-able offense, but I also don’t think it can go unnoticed given the bigger implications of what sticky fingers might pick up next.
  4. People do really think that finders-keepers is a proper way to live their life. And that they are holier than thou! that is mind boggling to me.

Thanks to everyone who stuck it out for this 10 page thread. I do value the variety of feedback that I have received, and it did make me take a step back and think about my own reaction. Be it tied to stress from the fall, from COVID, or from my base personality.

I will honestly say, in the 20 years I have posted on COTH, I don’t think I’ve ever had such a crazy thread. In some ways I feel proud.

Actually, though I don’t care for the delivery of Bent Hickory (per usual), the point “who is more valuable” is on that did make me think. Not that OP is not valuable. I’ll share my story first:

I used to trailer my kid out to a barn. We still attend PC there but no longer are active lesson people (at that facility, I have a full time jumper trainer). This barn is run more like a co-op. We starting phasing out our lessons because one of the environment created by 1 teen. This wasn’t even directed at us. The teen lies, borrows tack, stirs up sooooo much drama, has got caught in the lies, got making bigger deal of things. Her PARENTS are PIAs. A teen who does maintenance made a comment to the BO about his personal life, the younger brother of the boarder overheard and told his parents. Parents demanded the other kid get fired. The situation is so toxic around this kid it was one of the reasons we stopped going.

I was asked recently why I only go when my trainer is doing clinics there (I hooked them up) and I told them. They came back with “you aren’t the only one who has said that. But she works off most of her board, throws hay, does stalls. She is also the legacy student of a part time trainer there who would be furious if we kicked her out.”

So, in this situation (not the same as OP)- they know there is a problem, in their minds they “need” this kid- no matter how disruptive she is. to others. She also has the gift of coming off innocent and people feel bad for her (laundry list of pity items I won’t get in to).

Is it healthy- hell no. The barn has made its decision on where their priorities are and that’s the way it is. I am like OP, I have nice horses and ponies, we show rated (no one at this barn really does excluding once a year maybe). With 2 off us trailering in every week- they were making money off of us. Personally- boarding there was never an option so I am totally expendable to them, in their mind (my guess). At least moreso than having a grunt around.

Like I told my kid (not directed at OP) “We aren’t as special as we think we are.”

OP- can you blog about it  (ba ha ha - just kidding).

I guess you were overdue for a good trainwreck post then!

@Nickelodian wow to the wow, the responses you have gotten on this thread are pretty amazing! I can’t imagine such barns as some post even exist.

I’m just impressed you were back on in 2 weeks, given your crash. Glad you and the BO worked it out and your stuff showed back up.

I’m glad it’s all worked out with a satisfactory resolution. I too am amazed at the vitriol and excuses people have posted about this situation.

Thank you for the update. I hate not knowing how things turn out.

That is great news that your martingale and stick turned up. It seems awfully coincidental that the martingale suddenly appeared right about now after being missing for months, but I guess you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth at this point. I still have to wonder if other people at the barn have had things disappear.

There was a guy at a barn where I was for the winter several years ago. He lifted some cash that happened to be in his line of sight (long story), and then after he was fired, they realized that he had taken lots of other things that no one had noticed until after the fact.

I expect (or hope) this BW won’t last much longer if she doesn’t change her ways. She may have returned OP’s items, but that doesn’t mean she has returned to or will stop stealing from people who haven’t confronted her.

Yes, it’s ones own responsibility to put their stuff away. But it’s also ones own responsibility to not take something they know isn’t theirs, no matter where it is located.
I was always the WORST at leaving stuff out. At least once a month or more I’d leave something in the grooming area when I boarded - bridle, whip, boots, you name it. Only at one barn did my stuff go missing, and that barn had many other issues. Everywhere else, the items were still there next time I got to the barn, or someone had put them in my tack area if they knew it was mine. I’d have left OP’s barn by now if the BO didn’t fire the offender.

You’ve been a member for 14 years with 16 posts and only 8 show up (super weird. maybe some were pulled for similar behavior?). The first 5 posts were back to back posts jumping on a weird Texan named Jerry thread in 2007 and now a string of posts being a really booty hole to a fellow boarder.

Maybe you’re best served by lurking and keeping your opinions to yourself.

Some old posts didn’t migrate over when COTH changed platforms.

I’m still aghast that an adult human would think namecalling a fellow boarder on a public forum is an appropriate way to behave.

Really? Interesting.

I’m late to the party but, OP, you seem like a very reasonable, normal person.
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹When I was a boarder I left something out at least once a week. My stuff never disappeared. I’d be pretty ticked if it did.
As a barn owner now, I expect people to forget to put stuff away here and there. If my employees stole the stuff, they’d be out of here in a flash.

Great update OP. It sounds like you and the barn owner are dealing with the situation well.

While it does seem awfully coincidental, I don’t have any facts. Additionally there is the outside chance that BW had the martingale, realized after the discussion with BO that she had some adjustments in behavior necessary, and returned it. Who knows, I’m glad its back.

wow just catching up on this post, I am truly sorry for the hate you have received! It seemed like a pretty standard question but I guess the folks here at COTH have been quarantined too long and are ready to brawl! Glad you got some answers and some of your stuff back.

The definition of consequences is not ‘punishment’ it is ‘result’.

True that consequences can be either punishments or rewards, but given the context I’m pretty sure the consequences that she had in mind were punishments.

I’m late to the party, but when I was in high school one of the barn workers stole and sold my GPA helmet. He also stole weedeaters and such. Another stole a blower. My favorite was the one who came for their fist day and left for lunch, stole the coffee maker, and never came back. Haha. Fun times… and BTW I was a working student, not the barn owner or manager at the time.

OP left a completely blank slate for there to be NO consequences as well.

There is a whole spectrum from ZERO things happening in response (no response is a response, folks!) to various potential escalations, and COTH of course is bending over backwards to insist that OP wanted the barn help burned at the stake.

“What do you think the consequences should be for wearing a blue shirt on Tuesday?”
“There shouldnt be any consequences.”
See?
“No consequences” is a perfectly viable answer.

OP, glad things went as they did. Seems like a good outcome to the situation for the time being.

I am not sure why another boarder decided to jump on here and make things awkward…like, that makes a great barn environment.
