Well, that didnt take long

It was almost like OCD. She just had to keep trimming and trimming and trimming and it was never enough. Those images haunt me. That was truly awful. And I don’t think she meant any harm either. I think her conduct was completely out of her own control.

It’s a really bad version of a 4 point trim. Some barefoot trimmers started doing this because they believe it encourages the hoof to flex and expand, though most do not do such an exaggerated version. The hoof is designed to expand and flex sufficiently, why humans believe they can do quick cheats that beat millions of years of evolution, I’ll never know.

What is disturbing to me are the heels on these horses in combination with the direction of the hoof wall. The hooves are extremely broken forward which will increase the pressure of the P3 on the sole and can even cause the P3 to penetrate the sole. There is a picture upthread of a bruised sole where the P3 is creating too much pressure. Being broken forward also puts a lot of undue stress on the pastern structures and the canon is no longer centered over the widest point of the frog.

She likely rides at the walk because the horses are too unsound beyond that. If they aren’t now, they will be. It’s cruel.

I sincerely hope the horses have a veterinarian who will notice and x-ray those hooves.

Didn’t some of the horses have to be in slings? Is this the same lady who would use a dremmel tool to “fix” her horses hooves?

Yes, she was dremmeling multiple times a day every day. The hooves were bleeding. It was so sad.

Monica Thors. Too bad she didn’t stick to photography, my SO says she was a pretty good photographer.

What is wrong with the legal system in New Jersey?

I checked to see how the Monica Thors case ended, since I remembered the abuse but didn’t remember hearing about a consequence. This is from Horse Nation:

"Yesterday, what appears to be the final chapter in the Thors case — at least for now — came to a close in Gloucester County, where a judge sentenced Thors to one year of probation through a pre-trial intervention (PTI) program: first-time offenders indicted with non-violent crimes can get this option for probation.

“The state objected to PTI,” stated the Gloucester County District Attorney’s office. “However, the judge in this case overruled the state. The state then asked for two years of probation, and again was overruled by the judge for one year.”

If Thors is charged with a second offense of any kind, she violates the terms of probation and the original animal cruelty charges can be reinstated. However, if Thors follows her probation, the original charges will be dropped and her record will be clean. Under the terms of her probation, Thors can work with horses provided she is supervised.

In open court during legal proceedings, Thors wrote a letter to the court in which she stated that she felt no remorse for the death of her horses."

Poor horse definitely looks funky behind.

What were they going to do? How would incarcerating her help? She clearly suffers from significant mental illness.

Giving her a clean record after a year, and essentially not restricting her contact with animals is what worried me, not the lack of incarceration. What’s to stop a similar situation from reoccurring following the probationary period?

omg was that the one with the horses who would be bandaged from foot to knee completely crippled?

ETA: I see it is now. I hate that woman…HATE. Nothing but abuse.

I agree with you, she should definitely have a criminal record indicating animal abuse. She should also be prohibited from owning animals, mentally ill or not.

I will say that I think the Northern Lightness person is pretty far away from being this person. Whether or not that’s worth anything, I don’t know.

She was a very ill woman. She lost her marriage, relationship with her son, horses & cats (GOOD GOOD GOOD!) and she should NEVER own another animal. So very ill.

She lost her marriage with Ron Waples before all this happened.

Yeah, I know, but what I recall reading years ago was that there was odd behavior then that she wouldn’t or couldn’t address and they got worse. The photos of her smiling while mutilating those horses’ hooves was so very much in opposition (apposition?) to the child she was and later the woman he married.

It was sad. If she received treatment and it worked, I bet she was horrified by what she did. It took too long to get the animals removed and the court case to proceed, but at least it did happen.

She still should never be permitted to own another animal. If she chooses not to be treated and comes unglued she directly harms only herself.

From Monica Thors website:

“ Monica Thors was awarded a settlement from the law suit she filed against the New Jersey SPCA, for illegal and wrongful seizure of her horses and goat. In 2014 her life collapsed with an alleged conspiracy. She settled with some of the conspirators in 2017 dropping the charges. Monica’s focus is to resume her film productions, videography and photography. (May 7th 2018)”

An “alleged conspiracy.” God help us.

Words fail me. She should never have filed that suit and certainly shouldn’t have won it. I shudder in horror at what awaits animals in her care now and in the future.

May her neighbors and any family or friends who remain in her orbit and can see her animals keep a close on her.

wtf!!!

I do wonder what she means by “awarded a settlement”.

I know what most of us think it means, but I wonder what it means in this situation.

Once I read the entire statement over (and over again) it kind of sounds like the only settlement was “some of the conspirators in 2017 dropping the charges.” So perhaps less of a monetary settlement and more a reduction or elimination of charges (?).

But once again we get “conspiracy” and “conspirators” trotted out. I am so tired of that tactic.
