Which channel(s) will have the equestrian events
Who wants to DVR it for me? I won’t have a snowball’s chance in hell to watch anything, Olympics or otherwise while I go play Army up in Anchorage!
Can you copy off DVR? I’ve wanted to several times and haven’t been able to find out how.

Carol

If you go to www.expatshield.com and download their application, you will get a UK ip address and can watch on the BBC without NBC’s limitations. Thanks to equibrit for this.

My connection is too slow for streaming video and I don’t have cable or satellite at the moment, so my personal options are very, very limited.

At least in the DC area, this is the schedule for Equestrian on the networks I was getting:

Eventing Dressage, NBCSports 1:45PM-2:45PM Sat, 2:15-3PM Sun
XC, NBCSports, 8:15AM-12:45PM Monday
Eventing SJ, NBCSports 6AM-8:15AM and 9:15AM-10:30AM Tuesday

Dressage, MSNBC 1:30-2:30PM Thurs (8/2) and 12:20-1:30PM Fri (8/3)
Dressage, NBCSports 10:45-11:30PM Tues (8/7)
Dressage, MSNBC, 9AM-11AM Thurs (8/8)

Show Jumping, NBCSports 3:30PM-4:30PM Sat (8/4)
Show Jumping, NBC (regular network), 1:30PM-2PM Sun (8/5), 12-12:45PM Mon (8/6), and 10-10:30AM Weds (8/8)

As far as set up and access, I got an email from my cable company about logging in and setting up access via the NBC website with my cable login. Pretty straightforward, though I haven’t downloaded the iPhone app yet.

Ugh, they only have a windows version!

Just a word of caution. YMMV But I had problems when I did that and ended up spending a lot of time with a microsoft tech to get rid of it.SIGH

Any Canadians know if CBC will be doing an online live feed that will also be available on demand? (As they did for WEG and the Calgary Stampede). Any other live streaming or (preferably) on-demand options for Canadians (without cable/satelite subscription) that doesn’t require waking up at 4 am?

Did you know that the Brits have a FREE satellite service?
http://www.freesat.co.uk/files/7713/3346/3548/Freesat_Olympics_announcement_FINAL.pdf

It’s sponsored by the BBC and ITV.

Can someone please explain to me again why we can’t have something comparable in the US? Oh, wait. I know the answer. That would be evil socialism at work.

Dish Network??

Besides NBC does anyone know if any of the DISH channels will be airing Equestrian, I have unreliable Internet so streaming never works.

Is that 1:30 am or pm?

I have been led to believe, [by NBC] that we can watch almost all of it live, if we want to get up at 3 am. I am starting to check the various different networks, and all I see is Cycling, tennis, swimming, etc. The only one that I see that has a specific sport listed is Bravo, and I think that Tennis will begin at 4:00 am central time.
In scanning thru the channels, I saw that NBCsport, [it’s either 151 or 159 on the Dish], had been dropped. I called them and asked if I could have it back thru the Olympics. They said ‘yes mam’ and gave it to me for 1/2 price;$4.95 for one month, which I can immediately cancel after the games. So I have them all, and am not sure about the internet, but if I can figure out what channels, I will be set!

You have to buy the Dish and the box though. It’s actually “sponsored” by your TV licence;

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it’s being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

It costs £145.50 for colour and £49.00 annually for a black and white TV Licence.

You may find that they are required to do this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/governance/regulatory_framework/charter_agreement.html

I’m very depressed, since I just spent most of the afternoon trying to see what my satellite options are. I switched to Directv about ten or twelve years ago when it was owned by HughesNet, and gave up over the air broadcasting. I think I bought 3 different receivers during the time I was with Hughes. The last time I signed up for TV after Directv had been sold, I got yet another new receiver and found that the equipment had gone from owned to leased. As soon as my contract was up, I cancelled the service but was told that if I ever wanted to resubscribe using one of my owned receivers that would be no problem and no contract would be involved. About three months ago, I sent two of the really old receivers to recycling. Today I tried to reactivate the newest of the owned boxes and was told that it couldn’t be reactivated because of something in the access card that prevented service. It would cost me a contract for twelve months to get a new access card; and a pretty hefty fee besides. Plus the monthly charge for basic service without a contract would be $60. This is their absolutely cheapest package.

No thanks.

Called Dish. Can’t use the Directv dish with Dish. Can pay an installation fee of $99 and lease the receiver without a contract. Initial cost for installation and their premium package (250 channels or which about 30 are just music) which would get me NBCSports Network) would be $180. Then after the Olympics I could downgrade the package to something more affordable. 250 channels is $70 per month. This I am considering, but the outlay is really more than I can afford.

Don’t have internet service that is fast enough for streaming video, so it looks like I might have to miss the Olympics completely.

I will rely on the rest of you for discussion and results and scores.

I would be happy to pay only $300 per year for free satellite service.

No cable ?https://www.cableone.net/FYH/Pages/highspeedinternet.aspx
Highspeed seems to be available (on Viney Ridge Rd) in Clarksdale. Free installation.

This sounds like such a good idea that I immediately went to the link and downloaded the program… And downloaded the program… There seemed to be a number of programs that were downloaded.

But then I get to the end and get a box that says that there is no program associated with the download and that I should download a program .

HUH? What does that mean?

Lord Helpus, I’m going to try downloading it through CNET, a site I really trust. Read the reviews. They sound decent:

http://download.cnet.com/Expat-Shield/3000-2092_4-75211377.html#rateit

A problem is more likely to be on your computer. Firewall, security, windows settings etc.

It worked! Keep trying, Lord Helpus. I’m listening (and watching) about the N. Korean protest right now.

I just tried to sign in to live streaming and it failed miserably. Time Warner can’t help me, so I guess I am condemned to another Olympics of not being able to watch the equestrian events.
I’m 100% with you on this. We do not subscribe to cable or satellite TV…dumbest waste of money ever…they make you buy all kinds of channels you don’t want to see to get anything! We do have a big honking antenna on the roof for broadcast TV…we are also far from towers. So we’ll get limited coverage. It makes me angry that cable is controlling Olympic coverage…I’d pay something to get all the live feeds, but I am not about to subscribe to cable.
Subscribe to cable for a month and then cancel it. What’s the difference between doing that and paying for PPV?
