Winx, the wonder mare from Down Under.

I was hoping for Royal Ascot but I really do think this is the right move for Winx and a try for a 4th Cox Plate.

Staying for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 14th, then shipping+quarantine for Royal Ascot for one or maybe two races and then back to Oz for a 4th Cox Plate would be a lot on her plate. Sounds like the entire team, including Hugh Bowman weighed in on the decision.

While I would have loved to see her race at Royal Ascot, I’m glad they’ve decided not to put her through all that entails with shipping that far.
Maybe if she was a few years younger it would’ve been a different outcome.
She’s still a star in my book.

What a mare!

25 wins in a row, tying Black Caviar.

18(?) stakes wins in a row.

Hugh Bowman can ride this girl… sat chilly at the back until her patented move around the far turn when he asked. The last hundred yards or so was mostly a hand ride and won easily by about 4l.

What an amazing mare! I have enjoyed following her and the other superstar ladies of the last couple decades. Maybe it’s because I am a mare person anyway but I do love to see these tough racemares.

To top it off, her last splits were sprinter times and that was at the end of an approx 1 1/4 mile race

She always almost gives me heart failure…last, last, last, and then that amazing kick. Went really wide too, so probably ran further than everyone else.

She is nothing less than a superstar. Unbelievable how she just puts them all away!

Found a video!

Thank you CVPeg. What fun to see her run!

<3 this mare!

Winx update. Plans are to run in the newly upgraded (IIRC) Winx Stakes at Randwick on August 17.

Tomorrow night (well, Saturday Randwick time  ), Winx will attempt to go 26 for 26 consecutive victories in the Winx Stakes (G1). First race since the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) April 14 at Randwick.

She’s 7!

IIRC, 10:00pm PT on TVG.

How many times has a horse run in a race named after them? It would be an interesting statistic to find out…

I would agree, interesting stat and don’t recall hearing or seeing it mentioned. I do recall in the TVG ads for tonight’s race (well tomorrow  ) making the comment that rarely does a horse actually run in a race named in their honor. The BH article didn’t mention what the race was named previously but IIRC Winx has won it twice before this year’s race.

She’ll be breaking from PP5. Kementari (who has raced against her before) will be PP7. Hugh Bowman will be in the irons. Total field of 11 starters.

Would love to see her win and will be watching TVG tonight. I know every time I watch her race, my heart is in my throat with her running style

Exactly. Hoping she continues her amazing journey with another one. Almost there, but don’t think I can stay awake long enough to watch - even if I could find a channel No TVG here - just cruising online. Oooh, Guess it’s on TwinSpires!
Oops - iffy live video.
Found I can watch on TVG online. OK, took a bit. Almost race time. Guess I’ll watch live!

ETA: Wow! She is just amazing! Makes you laugh and cry at the same time. Who else is on the track? No one.
Off a 4-month layoff. Wow.

Winx is one amazing mare!

26 consecutive wins.

She was head and head with Kementari at the top of the lane and both off the lead.

With about 200m to go, she kicked it into high gear, left Kementari behind and polished off the field. About a length and a half win.

She just keeps getting better at the ripe age of 7.

I would crumble under the pressure at this point. I cannot imagine having to keep a streak alive while running in a race named for you.

Yet she delivers again. She is just incredible.

What I wonder is, how long will she stay spectacular? I’ve seen Tbreds stay strong in their 6-7yo years, but not many go past 7 that I recall. I wonder if this will be her last year.
Still smiling after seeing that.
I also love that she has an air about her that allows you to spot her just from how she walks, and then runs.

Interesting comments from Hugh Bowman on the race from BH article.

“It’s a while since she’s run over this distance, and it’s not as comfortable riding her, as it’s a bit short of her best trip,” Bowman said. "She was struggling at the pace over this distance, but when she balanced up and saw the winning post, she took off.

I’ve wondered the same thing CVPeg. She is 7 and past the age many mares race. You all would know better than I but I’ve gotten the impression that as mares age their fire to win gets less. True? Gotta say Winx showed that fire to win yesterday!
