it would help if they’d at least gotten her age right. I have a hard time taking a journalist seriously that can’t get that basic fact right.
Since none of MB’s people were on the record for the article it is basically a puff piece about LK.
Until they are back in court and any new information is presented, there really isn’t anything in that article that we had not already heard a thousand times though several different prisms.
What, you didn’t like the “sprawling 53 acre estate.”? Sounds like satire.
Now, instead of “just sitting on my front porch reading my book” we are now on the back porch?
At least we’ve gone back down to two shots, instead of three, then four.
COTH posters and Wackowitch are lumped together. Um, no. The vast majority of COTH posters bent over backwards to clarify that while LK was possibly an instigator, she did not deserve to be shot.
Just my opinion but, I feel Nir humiliated Joey. A source should be protected.
Off to prep for my next CDI, which apparently means I will be competing internationally.
They aren’t lumped together, NYT makes it very clear they are two separate entities. But you also can’t make COTH sound all measured and righteous, though. There are many posts like this one, which has 17 likes and not a single comment reacting back to it.
I love these message boards. I’ve been here a long, long time…longer than most. But this thread isn’t exactly a shining beacon of how to humanely respond to a tragic situation, and it’s pretty fairly represented in the article. They certainly could have pulled many more and many worse quotes than they did, especially if they had access to deleted ones. This thread is better than Wachowich for sure, but not always by much.
I find the “blind sympathy” I had for this woman, as a victim of violence, diminishing in response to the description of sentiments on this board that aren’t fawning over her as “blind sympathy for Mr. Barisone”. It is possible to maintain a certain level of respect for Barisone’s dressage achievements and entertain doubts about the simplistic story that’s been promoted by the press and the contradictory details offered by LK herself without suffering from fangirl delusions about what happened. I don’t think most of us who are not perfectly sympathetic to LK are even Barisone “fans”, per se, as the article would suggest.
Where journalism is concerned, I think it’s a bit problematic when a majority of one’s sources are unhinged. The woman herself, SW, the tweets at Trump asking for intervention in a personal matter … neither side seems to have a sane spokesperson. Aside from a couple lawyers saying the kinds of things they’re expected to say, the article seems to be built on a foundation of cray-cray. And it offers less information than has already been reported elsewhere.
Which makes it a human interest piece. And when it comes to the tugging of heart strings, I find it more annoying than effective in winning me over. LK might be a plucky victim fighting to recover. I wish her well in recovering from her physical injuries and whatever else is wrong in her life. But it takes more than a portrait of this lady as a gal with gumption fighting back against the mean, mean internet to make me overlook the insane tirades she’s spewed all over that same 'net or the long, documented history of problematic behavior. Those things will color my impression. That’s not bullying, it’s believing what you see.
Seems like the author might be monitoring this thread, as the inaccurate reporting re: Olympics has been corrected.
At least the article didn’t call her a “National Champion” as was reported in August. We all know now she has not earned her Bronze Medal even though she has it posted on every profile she has!
I am sorry LK was shot. She instigated so much against MB and MH that is unforgivable and can’t explain her actions. Sorry, no sympathy from me other than I am glad she is alive.
I accept apologies from anyone that accused me of being LK and what I am assuming were some pretty not nice comments directed at me(by the time I next looked at this forum it had been shut down and the responses to my last comment deleted).
Now dressage not only has the rep of being elite and snobby but full of a bunch of mean girls. The article was pretty much what I thought it would be.
I don’t think this reputation is new and it has nothing to do with this situation because from what I remember it has been around long before any of this happened.
I wasn’t expecting the article to be anything more than it was. Despite getting her age wrong and calling MB an Olympian, I still thought it was rather well done. The crazy was allowed to hang out on all sides from Girl Joey’s twitter post where LK was being LK, to inquiring about the harassment and bullying complaints filed with the USEF and finally this nutty thread.
I can see how someone could think people have blind sympathy for MB based on what people wrote here. We have the luxury of context with many posters. A repoter does not.
In my opinion, if you are writing something as a news article (and not a drama piece) then the writer should not have such a blind eye to the toxic side of the person they are trying to present. Sure, it is mentioned that LK has done some things but why not post some examples of the most recent threats that have been posted out there? The writer seems to mention LK’s posts in passing and quote and provide images of what others have said.
A sad part about this whole situation to me is that someone who appears to have been so evil to so many now has a boat load of sympathy because MB did the wrong thing.
Let me note, before anyone says otherwise, I do not think LK deserved to get shot. She can be a jerk of the highest level, but that still does not justify shooting her.
I’ve said it before and I’m sure I will say it again in my life: we ALL are accountable for our actions! If I choose to harass, threaten, stalk, slander, lie and make horrible false accusations to authorities about someone, I should OWN my actions. The same is true if I lose my sanity temporarily and take the law into my own hands, whether self defense or not, I should OWN my actions. Period!! Lauren Kanarek accepts no responsiblity for her behavior, ever. She is always the victim and blames others for her results. That is what has me so furious…
not that she was shot but what responsibility does she have in what happened?? Those who know her and her past behavior all ask the same questions. If that is victim shaming, then so be it!
Call me totally insane then…you and I were not there. We didn’t live the weeks of harassment and threats and refusal to leave the property. We weren’t kept awake, we weren’t forced to move to our barn to escape the harassment, we did not experience the impotence of the local police. And finally, we weren’t there for that last dig of having CPS come to investigate abuse and threaten to take two children away. No, shooting someone is not the answer, but tell me @ladyj79 what would you have done sitting in your armchair at home frustrated beyond reality? Can you explain what Lauren’s behavior was meant to achieve? How much more was anyone expected to take from her? Keep in mind, other than being shot, this is NOT the first time she has exhibited this behavior to this extreme.
I’m seriously rethinking my career choice. I think there is still time left for me (and many of the rest of you trolls😀) to win a Pulitzer Prize! I’ve seen much better and I believe more factual writing on the very thread.
eggbutt - to be honest, you often make it sound as if you were there… and also often seem far more deeply invested in this than a simple casual observer/commentator…
